If someone who speaks Sinhala doesn't know English, speak in highly sanskritized hindi. They should understand most of the words. Conversely, if they speak in heavily sanskritized formal Sinhala, you should be able to get the hang of it. :) You were asking the guy about forests and elephants. Elephant = hasthi and forest = vana in formal sinhala. These are almost the same in Hindi I believe.

Elephant in Sanskrit is Gaj or Hasti (less popularly used than gaj). And forest is Vanam. In Hindi, elephant is Hathi or Gaj (less popular) and Forest is jungle or van (less popular).
