I haven't stayed in India, but I was born in Mumbai, grew up in Singapore, and am now studying in Florida in the US. Let me just say this: income inequality is a big part of all 3 societies, but the extent is different. In Singapore, you are less likely to encounter very poor people, but there are still a good number of people struggling to make ends meet. The government is very proactive about ensuring that the citizen's needs are met, but it still can't control the overall inequality since Singapore's essentially a city state that can't be reasonably compared to large countries with diverse populations that have democratic traditions, such as the US and India. Singapore is best described as a technocracy: the city-state is governed like a company. In the US, what I have noticed is that there is a lot of homelessness and poverty in large cities, especially around downtown areas. Unlike in India, the homeless can't stay in slums and are mostly on the streets or in homeless shelters. As most people drive by car and don't take public transportation (which is not as developed as in Singapore and even certain parts of India I believe), they can pretty much be unaware of the harsh realities of poverty or choose to ignore them, just as affluent people do in India. There are homeless people here in the US knocking on the doors of cars or carrying around placards here in the US, just as in India. It's just the levels of poverty are starkly different because the US is a more developed country than India. But India has been developing over the years, and the world has started to notice. Yes, you can feel disappointed that it hasn't had the same growth story as China, but you can't expect it to because it has very different demographics, history, culture, and politics. My overall take is: that it's very easy to be critical of some place you have stayed for a long time and think it's better in another place you haven't been that long, just because of lack of familiarity. Problems exist everywhere, it's the lens we view those problems and the steps we take to solve those problems that decide the quality of our lives.
