"No one wants to see an old character withering away"...you nailed it...which is precisely why a movie like Top Gun Maverick did so well. Because it was an old character who was still portrayed as great...but was starting to realize that his time was coming to an end and it was his job to now pass the torch to a younger generation with humbleness and dignity. And it also portrayed the younger generation respecting him and his accomplishments...and gracefully accepting the torch as it was passed to them.

I didn't see Top Gun Maverick, because I hated Top Gun; but let me make a comment here any way. You say Tom Cruise's character "was an old character who was still portrayed as great". I agree that in Top Gun he was portrayed as great. But I thought he was a macho a**hole. Same with the other characters in that film. I'd really like to see him withering away in Top Gun Maverick.

Lets be honest. She turned a multi-billion dollar industry, into a multi-million dollar industry. Pretty much every one of these "social narrative" pieces turns into a huge flop... and yet they keep cranking them out as if they are dead-set on losing as much cash as possible. I was twelve years old when “Raiders of the Lost Ark” came out. The film honestly changed my life. I think it changed a lot of lives. I still remember seeing it for the first time with my dad in a little theater in my hometown. The theater closed last year after 50 years. And yes, it is the best Indiana Jones film ….hands down. Don’t let anyone else say otherwise. I must now take this bitter pill and endure the final Indy installment. It’s not going to be easy or fun. I’m not in any particular hurry to see it. Indy as a sullen, ineffectual invalid…Indy in 1969 (my God, I was born in 1970). These films have come to mark time and history in a weird sort of way. I don’t like how they’ve seemingly strip mined these iconic brands. Yes, sucked them dry and left their carcass in the desert. It seems like they’re trying to make us feel guilty for ever loving Indy in the first place. I’m quite sure it will make me feel sad (not nostalgic)….and probably rather old. Yes, RIP Indiana Jones.

@todd3382, I have a hard time seeing it as a “woke” film though. It’s certainly not feminist in the slightest with the opposite of a strong female lead in Helena who is, by Indy’s own words in the film, a reckless and irresponsible mess with Daddy issues, and a damsel in distress for most of the film, constantly having her ass saved by Indy. And race wise, it comes off horribly not woke in the slightest with its only black character brutally killed by a Nazi with that Nazi practically gloating in her face as this black woman he killed dies. It couldn’t be further from being woke in my view. And to answer your question: yes, it now will be part of my annual watch of the series along with the trilogy. The plot is sorta nonsense, but Waller-Bridge and Ford’s chemistry makes the movie a e notable watch for me. Definitely not as good as the first three films, but still entertaining nonetheless. Also its final scene made me very happy as an Indiana Jones fan.

I finished watching it over 2.5 hours ago. Um, it's probably the WORST Indiana Jones film I've seen. I HATED Helena Shaw. And here's the thing, I find Phoebe Waller-Bridge actually attractive the same way I find Daisy Ridley attractive. Phoebe reminds me a little bit of Elisabeth Moss from the side. Peggy Olsen was one of my favorites from one of my favorite shows of all-time: Mad Men. Were there good things from it? Sure. Probably seeing Karen Allen again at the end. I thought the first moment when it felt like an Indiana Jones movie happened when Indy goes to Tangiers. It's actually shown in the trailer. Indy takes out his whip only for the folks drawing their guns at him. That's very Indy-like. The first 15 minutes with the de-aged Harrison wasn't really that exciting at all. I thought the setting being in 1969 was cool too. And hearing John Williams' music throughout like the decent enough chase scene. My biggest issue really comes from Helena. I didn't like how she betrayed her own godfather to save her ass. She locks the gate. Indy gets captured. Then after Antonio Banderas' character gets killed, you see her laughing on the boat after they escape because she remembered to bring dynamite. She put Indy in a bad situation that could've got him killed but had his friends killed. Not to mention that cold mfer with the mustache killing innocent school workers. I wish Banderas' character was there longer. He would've livened up the group. The kid was Helena's own version of Short Round. But my biggest issues really comes from Helena and the many dark scenes when they went underwater and in that cave. I was ready to doze off being so dark. I'm still not sure how to feel with that time travel shit. That's too much like Bill &Ted's Excellent Adventure time traveling from a phone booth. When I was walking out of the theater, some kid who sounds about age 10-12 walking behind me was telling his mom he liked it. But the only thing he didn't like was the time traveling stuff. His mom actually enjoyed that part. I'm still not sure where I am with that. Indy is better without any alien and time travel shit. It doesn't need to go sci-fi. Indy was better with more grounded stories. Not alien/time travel BS. No issues seeing Indiana Jones, Sallah, or Marion. Didn't mind hearing old Harrison's voice with a de-aged Indy. It did take me out there for a moment but I eventually settled in with it. No issues listening to the GOAT composer's legendary music. Issues with Helena being such an asshole character only to discover her selfish ways while in Ancient Rome, Mads Mikkelsen being such a bland villain, pacing, story, and way too many dark scenes. Basically, most things at making a good movie! It was also devoid of humor. Harrison Ford is naturally funny as Han Solo and Indiana Jones and we didn't get much here. When Helena tries to be funny, the jokes falls flat because you keep thinking what a selfish c*nt she is for stealing ancient artifacts only to sell them off in auctions because she's in some huge debt. She got innocent people killed. The character named Klaber, is a big POS killing innocent people including ancient Romans from an airplane. I wish he had a far better death than that plane crash. What's with Han Solo and Indiana Jones dealing with DIVORCES later in their lives? Portrayed by the same actor but these iconic characters are going through a divorce, or in Han's case, he was already separated from Leia. At least seeing Karen Allen again gave some hope that it looked like Indy and Marion were going to reconcile. Here's the irony to all this.. I actually heard more clapping for this film after it finished than for The Flash. I did not clap. I was actually a little relieved it was over as it's about 15 to 30 minutes way too long. And the biggest laugh I heard for the entire film came when Helena punched Indy. I'm not sure I have the urge to rewatch this. Doesn't seem highly replayable for me. As bad as Crystal Skull was and it had some of the worst scenes for the entire franchise, it still had some fun to it. That Spielberg charm. We see Indy in 1957. The pacing was faster. Shia wasn't that terrible as Mutt. Harold Oxley added some fun to it. The banter between Indy, Marion, and Mutt was fun. Cate Blanchett did the best she can do from that script and her fake Russian accent and had some personality that Mads Mikkelsen's character lacked which shocks me because Mads was fine as a villain in Doctor Strange. Dial of Destiny basically made a turd like Crystal Skull look decent by comparison! There was a scene inside the caves that I wanted Helena to be killed. She basically got Indy framed for murder at that school and got a couple more of his friends killed on the boat. But I guess she flipped to the good side the moment Indy prevented them to kill her. What a mess this was. Thanks, Kathleen! You were great in it! You're now the worst character for this entire franchise. Worse than Elsa Schneider who at least had a decent heart by getting Walter Donovan killed. Worse than Mac who kept betraying Indy. Worse than Willie Scott who was only annoying but not a selfish asshole like Indy's "god daughter" looking to steal stuff and auction them off. She acted more like Mac's daughter than Basil's. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny: 6/10 Another soulless cash grab devoid of that Indy humor and charm. For the first two hours of the film, I felt Helena Shaw was the real villain! Kathleen Kennedy's own facsimile is in this franchise. Yet, she's supposed to be the protagonist next to Indy. She's 30-years-old and acting like she's still in high school believing she's so smart, funny, and charming. All the plot leaks about Phoebe's character from over a year ago were true. She ruined the entire movie for us. Dial of Destiny is still better than Quantumania but that's still not saying much. I know people shit on Rey from The Force Awakens but at least Rey was a good person. For 2 hours, there was nothing redeemable about Helena Shaw, a smug, double-crossing thief, and selfish capitalist. It took the last 20 minutes to discover what she was doing was wrong. Worst Characters Ever In Indiana Jones 1. Helena Shaw 2. Klaber (F this guy!) 3. George "Mac" McHale (annoying, useless character) 4. Mola Ram Dial of Destiny now has the 2 worst characters from the franchise surpassing Indy 4's Mac. Best Characters Ever In Indiana Jones 1. Henry "Indiana" Jones Jr. 2. Henry Jones Sr. (RIP) 3. Marion Ravenwood (moved up three spots) 4. Short Round (best sidekick Indy ever had) 5. Sallah El-Kahir 6. Marcus Brody (RIP) 7. Henry "Mutt" Williams/Jones III (RIP) 8. Harold Oxley 9. Willie Scott 10. Elsa Schneider (RIP) I will forever love Indiana Jones but it doesn't mean I have to regard Indy 4 and 5 as canon.

As a lifelong fan of Indiana Jones 1-3, it was so refreshing to hear your take on things. I like to imagine if I were Harrison Ford, I would have refused to have ever even made a 4th or 5th after that perfect ending to The LAST Crusade. Breaks my heart to know Harrison Ford lent himself to something that sullies the legacy of something that helped make him the admired actor he is. So predictable from Disney. They did it with Han Solo too, and Luke Skywalker. Make them old grumpy losers and have a replacement outshine them. Agree, a Marion Ravenwood or Evelyn O'Connell (from the 1999 Mummy movie) style character would have been a better female lead to play off against Indy. Really that 1999 Mummy movie was the last Indianna Jones movie/spiritual successor (before they got a bit Hollywood goofy in the sequels).

In an interview back when LAST CRUSADE was released, Spielberg said in an interview: "We filmed the four heroes riding off into the sunset because this is the end of a trilogy, like RETURN OF THE JEDI was for STAR WARS (THAT comment would sadly age like milk). They ride off into the west like cowboys in a classic western. That's why it's called LAST CRUSADE, because this is it, Indy's last adventure." (IMO) that's where these movies ENDED! The things that bothered me was where old Indy was at the beginning of the film. In a 3rd story apt in NY (he should have been in house, he should have been in a better place in his 70's after being a professor for 40 years), also Sahal being in an apt and driving a taxi (he seemed rather successful back in Egypt), why was Indy not at Marshall College (this makes no sense, he was tenured), the university he's at now doesn't seem to know, respect, or understand him, killing off Mutt (this was BS, he was anti-establishment, so now we're to believe he enlisted for the Vietnam War to spite Indy, plus he'd be in his 30's), and then there's Helena (she was a mess, I started to like her better later on, but then she does the motorcycle in the rain and that "thing" in the past and shot all that good will in the foot). That all said, I didn't hate the movie. I thought there were fun moments, but take that with a grain of salt. I saw the movie in 4DX and I think it made the movie better. I don't know how I'd feel if I saw the movie without being punched in the back and felt like I was on a roller coaster ride during the fight and chase scenes.

I saw it. I saw the movie's weakpoints, mainly being PWB's character and her writing. But I found enough gems in this film to thoroughly enjoy the ride. Harrison does an amazing job and I even felt that I could go and watch a detective style movie of Indy and Sallah in the New York of the 70's , without a lot of action. How short it was, I loved the scenes with Indy and Sallah together in the taxi and his appartement. I loved the treasure hunting and puzzlescenes more than the action sequences actually. It could have used more mystery and a supernatural feel. That would have helped. Anyway. I feel greatfull for having been alle to see Harrison wear the fedora and jacket once more. To me this was so satisfying, I could easily watch over the faults and flaws. Hell. Even Indy, sitting in a bar, lamenting his good old days for two hours straight would have been fine for me. Yes, I am, point in fact, such a huge fan.

I loved the first movie and to some extent, the second, because they felt like the pulp novels after which they were designed. Unfortunately, there's a problem inherent in those sorts of stories because so much of what happens involves an ultimately unbeatable hero who you know will win in the end. This means you either have to (a) give him ways to lose in secondary ways, (b) give him a stalemate that's a borderline victory, or (c) have characters that may or may not die in the end. Otherwise, the movies lose tension.

I appreciate the review with actual thought and reasoning behind the negatives. The thing that people are missing about treating Indy bad is that it does change as the movie progresses and she begins to develops a connection with him and respect for him. She’s not just snarky to Indy in this film, but to everyone as that’s her character; Only out for herself, but like I said… she evolves. I have my arguments for most things people consider bad in this film but that would be further than the scope of what I wanted to say here. I will add that the old Harrison voice on younger Indy is a big, “ you couldn’t clean that up a bit?” And the fact that, and only god knows why, they didn’t dissolved the paramount logo into anything. Especially when the beginning is set at a castle they could have used. That being said, I absolutely loved the film and I’m an Indy die hard to the point of having multiple pieces of Indy wardrobe made by the original people and even was part of the groups that study the stuff on screen to be as accurate as possible.

As someone in my mid-50s, I loved the scene of Indiana Jones sitting in front of the television asleep in his drawers. I immediately thought of my father and of that generation who went off to fight the Second World War, went on adventures and then return to live ordinary lives. And do ordinary things, like falling asleep in front of the TV. Was Indy being ushered into retirement to make way for Helena? Yes but that is exactly what life does when one gets old. You go from throwing the family parties one day to being the old person sitting on the couch with the young people swirling around you. I like that Hollywood allowed Harrison Ford to get old, unlike Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise. And I appreciated this movie.

Yeah, she's a spoiled narcissist, but her narcissism is so poetically and cleverly done. That scene where Indy brings her the fruit after that awful dinner scene is so great. The interaction between Dr. Jones and Willie is just poetry, followed by the fight, where Indy is being choked, and she's screaming from the other room "You'll always remember this as the night I slipped through your fingers!!" And Indy just reaches out with his hand, because there's nothing he could do at that moment. It's great.
