Thank you, Grace, for pointing out how Hollywood missed the point of why The Dark Knight “worked”. There’s this weird rewrite of history that the Nolan trilogy was super dark and edgelord, when it was actually quite quippy and optimistic and didn’t completely deconstruct Batman, but rather distilled him. Whether you like which part Nolan focuses on is another matter

Indiana Jones was barely a character. I think it just doesn't work here what they were trying to do. I goes so far away from Indiana Jones film you may as well make a new series. Characters in Star Wars were more complex and it is definitely feasible that Luke would become jaded, plus it is not like the other films didn't stray away from darker elements.

Thanks for this, Grace. I think this is why Maverick worked for me. We do grow older with our heroes and seeing Maverick do his thing, but still need others, was a better journey. I didn't like what Mangold did to Logan either. As soon as I heard he was directing, I thought Indy was going to die because those are Mangold-type stories. Again, agreed with all points brought up. In short, I was hoping for more classic Indiana sleuthing - more like a DaVinci Code vibe where he's solving puzzles, discovering things as they go. No need for a long, ridiculous car / horse chase in this film. Give me more mythology in a movie like this. And I do not understand how some of the things that clearly took us out of the movie (older voice open sequence, Indy's ability to jump from car to car, run and climb with ease) aren't flagged and corrected on a movie of this size.

It seems clear to me that Kennedy was trying to set up a Helena Shaw spin-off series or movie. Once again, she was unhealthily fixated on elevating female characters when she *should* have been giving Indy the send-off he deserved. There *are* parts of this movie that I enjoyed, and, unlike some, I actually did like Helena on occasion; I think she had potential. But Kennedy's intentions became clearer as the movie progressed, and the way the movie ended was a travesty.

I guess I wasn’t so depressed because I felt like the premise of this film reflected the now - I feel like the internet is the “looking to the stars”, where the younger generations don’t really respect anything that isn’t modern. The historians have suddenly become vilified and “boomers” are to be ignored… so to see Indy still being Indy and the selfish “Wombat”, who represented a younger generation, actually being the one PUNCHING Indy back into relevance, it made me think the generations CAN make peace! And that my own father is struggling I saw much of my dad in Indy.

The reason Indiana Jones as a franchise was viable is Indiana Jones's charisma. So that an Indy movie didn't have be perfect like Raiders. So that even Temple of Doom (where things got especially silly and/or shallow) was watchable just because we wanted to see how Indiana Jones would act in those situations. That's what made it financially safe to make a random adventure episode with that character. Well if you change the character and make him a depressed loser, then that means you're relying on the rest of the movie (plot, other characters, visuals, etc.) to be good. Yeah this happened with Logan, but unfortunately Indy 5 was not good. Helena was not charismatic and wasn't compelling enough to sustain the movie. The plot was dumb and the action sequences were mediocre. The only thing going for it was John Williams, but the sound effects drowned out the music during the action sequences. The best part of the movie was the end credits where you could hear the amazing score.

Just a heads up: deconstruction doesn't ALWAYS/necessarily mean 'disrespect' of beloved legacy characters/tropes. The problem is that pretty much ONLY this type of deconstruction (with the agenda of boosting some new character in place of the old) is happening in Hollywood since the last decade. Scream, Unforgiven, 500 Days of Summer, The Irishman, Watchmen (by Alan Moore), The Dark Knight Returns (by Frank Miller), Neon Genesis Evangelion, etc were all examples of deconstruction done RIGHT.
@CartoonistDave

I’ve generally subscribed to the idea that there is a deliberate effort to “subvert” - really undermine and devalue our childhood heroes - like Luke, Han and Indy. And I still think that is the case. But now I think it’s ALSO because the modern moviemakers just don’t know how to do anything else. They only have one cookie-cutter character arc to use. So incompetence, unoriginality and lack of imagination. They just don’t know how to do anything else with an older character.

It didn’t make me feel bad. Getting old is not the end. Many of us ride bikes, hike, and enjoy life. I think younger people are afraid of getting older. But I would not trade my wisdom and experience for youth. The other stuff he goes through is real life and leaning to take life on life’s terms is huge.

You say that your audience burst into applause when Helena knocked out Indy, which is *fine,* if that was their honest reaction. Who am I to tell them what to enjoy? Nobody. But here's the problem with that from a narrative perspective: the *protagonist* should have the agency at the climax of his story. In The Last Crusade, for comparison, Indy was encouraged by his father to abandon the Holy Grail, but Indy *himself* made the decision, and therefore it was *his* moment, his victory of character. Giving the agency, and the character development, to Helena -- not only at the end of this particular Indiana Jones movie, but at the end of the Indiana Jones SAGA -- is contemptible, in my humble opinion, and it reeks of Kathleen Kennedy. P.S. This was also a big problem I had with the Loki series, which I know you liked, Grace. Loki had *no* agency in the final episode of his show. None. He was, in effect, a passive observer, who achieved nothing. Sylvie was the main character. She was the proactive one, and she got her way.

I also felt bad for Sallah when he said he had his passport and wanted to go on another adventure. Also, it would of been good to show the funeral or a notice that the son died just to tie in stuff from the Crystal Skull. The problem is that either Indy doesn't choose his friends well, like in the beginning of _Raiders_ or they get killed like in _Temple of Doom,_ "I followed you on many adventures." Either he has to pick people whom he barely knows so doesn't care much about, or risk his friends getting killed in front of him. I'd rather he'd have had a picture of Short Round on his wall, then have him get killed diving with him.

Grace, thank you for this, and the no spoiler, review. I would like to make just a couple of comments. The first being on the deconstruction of heroes in some recent films. I can't help but think this is an attack on strong male heroes specifically, since I can't think of any example of this being done to a female hero, or "Mary Sue" as you have previously called them. The second comment was to agree with you about the look on Jones' face as he revealed he felt he had no one to live for. This was truly a sad moment, but you failed to mention the look of the Helena character's face. His comment struck her hard because she, being his god-daughter, was someone for him to live for, someone who would have benefitted from a stable father-figure in her life, given the breakdown of her own father. Jones completely disregarded her and her feelings, and I thought Waller-Bridges reflected this pain in her own face very well. Keep up the good work!

For years they've been known for rejecting offers from major studios and agencies, really understands what kind of filmmakers they want to be, and most important of all, how they like to work. Even though they now work with big stars like Adam Sandler, they are somehow still able to find a collaborative process that didn't sacrifice their artistic integrities and ego just to make a buck. Archeology wasn't completely irrelevant and uninteresting. For example, _Chariots of the Gods_ was published in 1968, spawning interest. I recall reading that Carl Sagan discussed it with an Egyptologist/archeologist, saying the Egyptian stuff was interesting but the astronomy parts were bunk. The expert said he had the opposite opinion that the astronomy was interesting but the Egyptology was bunk. They could have had students eager to learn about aliens inspiring Ancient Egypt and the pyramids, with Indy bursting their bubble. But like Grace said, they didn't explore much about 1969. Of course it was aliens in South America, another reason the previous movie sucked.

There's no reason to focus on an aging James Bond to pass the mantle on. You just hire a new guy and he's the new Bond. That's been the formula since the beginning. That said, you can't really do that with Indiana Jones, but you CAN do something similar. Passing the torch (or hat in this instance) to a new Indiana Jones-like character could've worked, but it needed to be handled with care. I know Shia had no interest to return to the role of Mutt, but Mutt could've been recast since there's a 15 year time jump, and this film could've been a play on the events of Last Crusade, with the Mutt character being like Indiana and Indiana being like Henry Jones Sr.. Especially when you consider that Shia in Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was very much like young Indiana in the opening of Last Crusade with how determined and manic he was during the action sequences, and I can absolutely get behind a new franchise called 'The Adventures of Mutt Jones.' This Helena character is just too bleh and unlikeable to do anything with.

@@orlock20 True, and especially in the sense of a character like Mutt, but not so for Indy. If, right after Last Crusade, Indiana had been recast for further adventures it would've worked, but now we've seen him in his prime for the original trilogy, at an older stage in his life in Crystal Skull, and then again 15 years after that in Dial of Destiny. At this point Harrison Ford IS Indiana Jones, but it doesn't mean a spin-off character can't be created to continue those types of adventures in that same universe, but unfortunately for Phoebe Waller-Bridge, she isn't that character. She just doesn't work as a character.

Grace, your final comment with the mirror is very well done. Also, us „normal guys“ want our heroes too. If EVERY old character/franchise is squeezed into a 4 quadrant thing only by stunt casting instead of finding a good creative team and a story, it’s simply not fair to the fans who MADE a franchise this long lasting and genuinely LOVE a character

I can see why Spielberg turned this down, but I also think if they had allowed him to tweak the script, he might have been able to bring just the right touch of sunsetting nostalgia, fun AND drama to the ideas (interesting but underused) here. Instead, it was overly nihilistic and full of character assassination. Mangold did this stuff much better in Wolverine. Indy was broken down to being essentially the worst villain and Helena had "to save it all." (which she did multiple times). They had to destroy Indy to build up Helena...this trope keeps happening and makes no one happy.

Yes, Grace! It was all so depressing! Booo! This was a film in disguise as a Indiana Jones film. Crystal Skull ended better! It was completely missing the Spielberg touch in all aspects, and I couldn't stand how they tore him down. I was pulled out from the start. The end did not fit Indiana at all. He is always hopeful. I never laughed either. So bleak. SO bleak. I mean, if they killed Indiana Jones, id have walked out. I've read and heard SO many better ideas for a fifth film plot, even my own was better. haha. These are the writers using well loved franchises for their own gains, and I HATE it. It was awful what they did to Indiana, and they tried to make us not like Marion! I hated that they killed off Mutt (so lazy), and the film was so linear. I like Mangold's films, but he missed the mark here.

I really liked Dial of Destiny. It surpasses Temple of Doom to me. And thinking about the life of Indiana Jones, I think now I like Crystal Skull a little better. (It's still my least favourite though, because that third act is too videogame-like.) It didn't bother me that Indy was in a low, and I didn't mind Helena's character, I liked her, and I think it was sweet to think that Indy is loved and has people in his life. And Marion came back, that was unexpected to me. I really enjoyed this, and I can't understand why people don't like it. The end was amazing! To talk to Archimedes himself! In ancient Greek! One major problem with the ending of this movie: Phoebe Waller-Bridge was terribly miscast. She's so thin(almost frail) and gangly that she's completely unbelievable as a physically strong female, yet she manages to kick booty against the villains and knock out Indiana Jones with one punch. Really?!?!! Come on! She'd break every bone in her hand if she punched Indy in the face. No way, no how, uh-uh.

Overall I liked the movie well enough. The opening sequence felt pretty great. That felt a lot like Indiana Jones. What I think was missing was a big heroic moment for Indy in the latter half with the classic John Williams march playing at full blast. A non-passive Indy in the climax would have gone a long way. Also, not once did I feel enchanted with the locations they were at. Nothing felt grand, epic or sweeping in terms of filming and locations. In these types of movies the locations, people and cultures often are a sort of a character themselves in the movie. This movie doesn't have that. Those are the two ingredients that I think are missing from the recipe.

I like a lot of this review but Indiana being disrespectful, mean and dismissive makes sense for someone who lost a son. What is a homeless man going to do with a clock? Does it matter? The moment was to transmit to us his state of mind. I do agree with the whimsical moments missing here. Example: a nice moment in Indy 3 where Indy looks at his father with wonder after his dad shops the birds on the beach with an umbrella and brings down a plane this movie did not have that. The problem with Helena’s character was her conflicting motivations. Thief? Lover of archaeology? Self serving? Self sacrificing? Which is it? The writing did her character no justice. I didn’t give much thought to the apartment at the end. Hell, I’ve lived in both homes and apartments and you can find happiness or misery in both.
