When George Lucas made Star Wars everyone was so convinced it would be a flop, even Lucas himself. So instead of going to the Star Wars premier he instead flew to Hawaii with his friend Steven Spielberg to chill out. While they were there they came up with the story for Indiana Jones.
@willbeonekenobi2 жыл бұрын
Actually George Lucas had the idea for Indiana Jones before he made Star Wars. He and another filmmaker Phillip Kaufman (1978's Invasion of the Body Snatchers, 1983's The Right Stuff) who was Lucas' first choice to direct the film but then Kaufman left after two weeks of working on the film, then George did Star Wars and while waiting for the grosses to start coming in for Star Wars (and wanting to get away from the opening) he joined up with Steven Spielberg in Hawaii and Lucas asked Spielberg what his next project is and Spielberg said that he had been trying to get the attention of the James Bond producers for a long time because he wanted to do a James bond film, then George pitched Raiders of The Lost Ark to him. Steve agreed on the spot on the condition of the main characters name is changed as the name was originally going to be Indiana Smith. Lucas then suggested 'Okay what about "indiana Jones"?' Then steve was like 'Okay I'm in.'

Fun fact: The Mythbusters did multiple Indiana Jones specials, and tested that running through the darts hall scene. They matched the time of stepping on the pad to releasing the dart. It worked, you could make it if you ran even at a good paced run
@logandarklighter2 жыл бұрын
I saw that episode - a favorite. But I had a further idea - and it comes in two parts: ONE - The darts activate rather slowly in the film. There's like a full one-second delay between the pad depress and the dart shooting out. So I thought - maybe what has happened here is that the temple is OLD. And it has barely had any visitors. The pad/dart combo has to be a complex mechanism. Maybe the inner workings of it are corroded or grown into with tree roots. That would explain the slow activation time. Originally they acted MUCH faster. TWO - What if the darts were timed such that they were meant to kill anyone APPROACHING the idol. But that same timing would work AGAINST them hitting anyone going the other way? A combination of both factors could be what saved Indy!

Easter eggs were definitely a thing even at the time "Raiders of the Lost Ark" was made. In fact, there's a famous one when Indy and Sallah first discover the Ark and are lifting the big stone lid off of its resting place. As they're lifting it out, you'll notice that there are small columns surrounding them, covered in hieroglyphs. On the column to Indy's right, one of the hieroglyphs looks like R2-D2 and C-3PO. Similarly, when Indy is running from the Hovitos at the beginning of the movie and yelling at Jock to start the plane, you can see that the registration number on Jock's plane is OB-CPO, a slightly obscured shout-out to Obi-wan Kenobi and C-3PO. There are some others Star Wars easter eggs in the Indiana Jones sequels as well but, since I don't think you've reacted to them yet, I won't spoil them here. Let's just say that there are enough Star Wars easter eggs in the Indiana Jones movies that there's actually a fan theory that all of Indiana Jones's adventures are just dreams that Han Solo is having while frozen in carbonite. The Indiana Jones movies also have some shout-outs to James Bond. And the num-chuk/coat hangar scene with the Nazi in Marion's bar is actually a callback to a gag Spielberg did in one of his earlier movies ("1941"). Oh! And several of the characters throughout the Indiana Jones movies are named after the filmmakers' pets, including George Lucas's dog, Steven Spielberg's dog, and the dog of screenwriters Willard Huyck and Gloria Katz. Fun side note to that one: George Lucas's dog was also the inspiration for Chewbacca in Star Wars. And, finally, this isn't really an easter egg but is maybe a fun fact depending on what kind of TV you watched growing up: Indy's rival archaeologist in this movie, Belloq, is played by Paul Freeman who went on to play the villain, Ivan Ooze, in the Power Rangers.

The stunt with the truck with a stuntman going underneath was probably one of the most daring & incredible stunts ever caught on film. Finally I am still bewildered to how that final scene was done with the ark. If CGI was around back then that is easily explained however we are talking about 1981 & to perfect a scene like that is something quite special. He had the runs, belly cramps, that sweat on his face and shirt was real...he said he could barely get out of bed and into costume. Finally, he said to Spielberg on the set, "Couldn't I just take out my gun and shoot the bastard?" The crew laughed, and Spielberg realized that not only did it make the most sense for Jones' character, but it was a great lighthearted moment that the film could benefit from. The studio for the indoor shots was in England. For the Well of Souls, they needed so many snakes that they cleaned out every animal dealer in the southern UK. Even so, that wasn't enough to fill the set, so they extended the number with cut-up garden hoses.

So that plays off into him just drunkenly laughing at her when she pulls the knife on him and tries to escape. It actually makes me laugh when he laughs at her pulling out the knife.

LOL, if you react that way to seeing spiders on someone's back (I too admit it freaks me out), I cannot wait to see your faces seeing the next movie, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. Do you know about the fan theories that the Indiana Jones movies all take place in Han Solo's imagination while he's still frozen in carbonite? Indy 3 or Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade is probably my favorite of the franchise, and then the next sequel after that is probably the worst movie of the franchise, LOL! It is not that part 4 is so horrible and it does have its moments, but it feels so out of place and Indy just looks and feels so different too as a character. Did you know there were also the young Indiana Jones chronicles show? Disney & Lucasfilm did announce an Indiana Jones 5 movie I cannot wait to see. Did you see how Chris Pratt said he will not be Indiana Jones out of respect for Harrison Ford? That was really cool of him. Though, at the same time, I could see Pratt playing Indy in a movie.

The sliding under the truck scene was inspired by an old western stunt from the original 1939 "Stagecoach". Stuntman Terry Leonard had tried to do it a year before Raiders for a western, but failed, so he suggested to do it again here. Google images of Ford and Leonard -- they looked amazingly similar at the time in costume. For some of the shots with Indy behind the truck it was actually Harrison Ford himself.
@jakecook23752 жыл бұрын
The Temple of Doom was made after this one and it was not a sequel, all of the Indiana Jones moves were like the OT S W, independent stories. You guys are sharp, some of the sounds are from SW and I bet Ben Burt worked on this movie as well.

Somebody wrote something about how this movie is really about Indy finding his own religious faith. In the beginning he teases Marcus about his concerns, saying "You're talking about the bogeyman," indicating that he thinks the Ark is a tremendous historical find, but nothing to do with an actual God. By the end, he's afraid it might be the real deal, so, relying on his knowledge of mythology and religious belief, he tells Marian to shut her eyes, because he knows that they are not allowed to look upon this artifact.

It is rumored that Karen Allen aka Marian of this movie possible return for last Jones 5 with Harrison Ford coming out next year. Harrison signed on for final times as Indiana Jones. Supposedly, the original script had a scene they chose not to use... as Indy and Marian are leaving in the final scene, their departure is observed through an open office window, in which are shadowy figures of Roosevelt, Churchill and Pope Pius XII, lamenting the fact that they couldn't tell Jones the real reason they wanted him to go after the Ark... to keep it out of the hands of Hitler.

Two young KZbinrs are about to travel with Dr. Henry Jones, Jr. What will they make of this "old, long, noisy, last century" movie? I've read that Spielberg and Lucas were thinking about what to do next. Spielberg wanted to "do a James Bond" movie, but Lucas brought up the cliffhanger serials of the 1930's and 1940's. With their second choice leading man signed, they headed off for adventure. Harrison Ford got an academic upgrade to "Dr. Henry Jones, Jr." and another iconic role in a movie franchise. With enough action for THREE Action Adventure movies, "Raiders" stormed the box office in 1981. Two-fisted Marion Ravenwood was an equal to Indy, unlike the "wilting urban girl" of...Oops, a spoiler! 39:39 This scene made the theater audience sigh and laugh. Are the real life adventures of this adventurer an inspiration for "Indiana Jones"?: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roy_Chapman_Andrews

Not sure it was possible for a lesser ape to join the party, at least not until the very end of the war. Don't forget, in this period the Germans weren't an enemy of the US and WW2 hadn't started yet. Nor was the US the world power it came to be off the back of WW2

I know I am super late to the party but I just can't help myself from commenting on this gem of a film and the reaction. Well done, really enjoying your channel and slowly working my way thru your catalog. If by chance you stumble upon this comment I would like to put forth this thought in case it has not been mentioned yet: If you think about this story the "heroes" are actually just along for the ride and don't really do much of anything that alters the outcome. Imagine that Indy didn't get involved at all, the Nazi agents would have found the amulet and discovered the actual burial site of the Ark and taken it to that island. Which they ended up doing even with Indy's intervention. They would have performed the same ritual and they would have all died. All our "heroes" actually do is contact some American authorities at the end so that the Ark can "get lost" yet again in a metaphorical desert buried in a sea of crates. It is one of the few action/adventure films I have watched where the heroes do next to nothing and are just there to facilitate the story telling for the audience. One of my favorites. In any case really enjoy your channel and I look forward to future content! Cheers!

Slight correction: during ww2, Himmler was the true nut job on the Occult, Hitler barely had any interest in such obsession. Granted, he allowed Himmler near unlimited funding to try and find various religious artifacts. The Holy Grail, The Ark, many others. Himmler believed with these objects in possession, they could be harnessed to ensure not just victory, but ETERNAL rule over the earth. Hitler was more a dark fan of art from around the globe.

I think you both would get a kick out of it too. Maybe one day you’ll consider it.
@Valentin_1265 ай бұрын
One thing I find quite funny about this movie is that Indy had next to zero relevance on the outcome of the story. Without Indy's intervention the Nazis would've still found the Ark, taken it to the island, done the ritual, and died. I suppose Indy's only influence on the story of the movie would be that the US military was able to retrieve the Ark afterwards, presumably he gave up the location after he and Marion found their way back to America.

A little clarification. The Ark of the Covenant was what the ancient Hebrews used to carry the original Ten Commandments around in. )The same that were brought down from the mount by Moses). These original Ten Commandments were etched on stone tablets. This is why when they opened the ark expecting to find them, all they found was sand since the tablets had already turned to sand from the erosion of time.
@MartinBeerbomАй бұрын
There was a scene that has been cut, where the old guy translating the headpiece tells Indy to not look if the Ark is opened. But even so, the whole scene at the end is completely Old Testament Wrath of God type stuff -- like Lot's wife looking back and turned to a pillar of salt when Sodom and Gomorrah was destroyed -- so Indy probably knew enough about it to know what to do.

Raiders owes a lot to the writing of H. Rider Haggard in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Haggard created the model of the Great White Hunter in books like King Solomon's Mines, She, and many others. Raiders relies heavily on practical and optical effects, coming as it did before CGI would take over. One particular stunt, with Indy traversing under a German truck, is a recreation of a classic created by stuntman Yakima Cannot for the 1939 John Wayne film Stagecoach. Both versions of the stunt are amazing.
@logandarklighter2 жыл бұрын
And while the actual traverse under was done by a stuntman, the dragging behind was Harrison Ford himself. (Obviously since there's a close-up or two while he's being dragged.) So kudos both to the stuntman and to Harrsion Ford himself (who got some bruised ribs from his portion of the stunt).

The love story between these two is much more impactful than your typical romance or anime romance. Like I'm sick of movies and shows having a token girl show up and then they're like "Oh I know we just met, but I love you because reasons." I mean, they had a long history together already, they dated before, he did her wrong, she moved on, he showed up, she rejected him, he left.. then her place got destroyed and Nazis kidnapped her. He rescued her.. she rescued him back... like their relationship flows organically and is believable. You can really tell that they can barely stand each other, but they have been riding the fence with each other for years. It's beautiful, and believable. They truly love each other, but both of them have too much pride to let it work. Until they both almost die several times.
