as a person who saw this in theaters as a kid, i can say the hype about this movie was great. I loved it when it came out. McDonalds even sold limited edition glass cups. of course i bought one :D

It makes him laugh that Two Face stole cell phones, but we must remember that it's a 1995 film, probably filmed in 1994, at the time cell phones were luxury items only for the rich, they were worth a fortune. Robin's joke on the metal island is a reference to the 1960s television series with Adam West and Burt Ward: Robin always spoke like this in the series.

Ok, hold on....as someone who actually lived through the 1990's as a young adult, cell phones were NOT a "luxury item" in 1994, owned only by the rich. I got my first one in 1995, and even adjusted for inflation, it cost me a lot less than what an iPhone costs today. I got my first flip phone in 1996, and it was like $250 (about $350 in today's money). Not nearly as many people chose to purchase them as today, but they were definitely not "a luxury item only for the rich."

Drew Barrymore was at the peak yet tail end of her bad girl period. She was no longer troubled in life but most of her characters in the early 1990s were rebels and vixens. She also had a pictorial in a certain popular magazine early that year. By the end of the decade, she had wholesome young leading lady characters in a few hit movies, and then really went big with "Charlie's Angels."

Keep in mind when you watch movies from the 90's that CGI was still in a transitional period. While used, it wasn't used as extensively as it is now. So, often times, when you say, "the CGI has held up well," you may be referring to practical effects, animatronics, and composite effects that were at their peak development. There was definitely some CGI in this film, but a lot more of it was practical than you probably think.

People really be trashing this movie. I really enjoy Tim Burton's batman movies but this was a fresh new take and as a 12 year old kid all the way to young adulthood batman forever was the one for me. Seriously underrated batman performance.

While I think both of the villains were pretty goofy, Val Kilmer made a very good Bruce/Batman EDIT - Also, I don't think Nicole Kidman has ever looked more beautiful than she did in this movie :)

So just a little correction these films are not connected to the Burton verse. Last year the Burton movies had a comic books series called Batman 89 featuring a few comic issues diving into the events post Batman Returns. These comics use the likenesses of the Burton actors with Michael Keaton returning as Batman along with Michelle Pfeiffer as Catwoman and Billy Dee Williams as Two Face. It also features Anton Furst Gotham City from the Burton movies as well fitting with the art direction of Burton films. These comics act as the third Burton movie the film we would've gotten if Burton stayed on and was allowed to direct his idea of a sequel. They also feature a whole different Robin as well so the Burtonverse has it's own origin for Robin and Michael Keaton's Batman to the one we see in this film. So when you go into the Flash film just pretend that Forever and Batman & Robin never happened in relation to what Michael Keaton's Batman has went through. While Batman Forever is seen is it's own timeline where events maybe happened similar to that of the Burton movies but with different actors, different depiction of Gotham, and some returning faces. Same goes with Batman & Robin which I think has nods to Batman Forever while Batman Forever has nods to Batman Returns. So yeah in the eyes of WB these films are all connected but years later in the eyes of DC the Burtonverse is it's own thing while Batman Forever and Batman & Robin exist outside of this. I really do like this film though the art direction is amazing and Neo Gotham looks great very Art Deco mixed with Neon Vegas and alot of 1940s elements such as the retro police cars and the vehicles used by Two Faces men all giving it a very timeline Animated Series look. It does look more like Metropolis at times with all the Art Deco than Gotham but its really cool design nontheless. This is my personal favourite versions of Gotham when they dive into the timeless look and feel something we saw in the Burton films and also the Batman Animated Series. The movie is less dark as well going for a more campy feel but to the background of a more gothic Gotham City than the Sunny West Coast setting depicted in the 1966 Batman Adam West show. Would've loved more of a mix of darkness meets camp but it's fun to re-watch.

I'd say that the Schumacher films are just as much a part of the Burtonverse as the Batman '89 comics are, but it's kinda like the relationship between, say, Halloween II and Halloween 2018: two stories that are in the same fictional universe but not in the exact same timeline. Batman Forever is a sequel to the first two movies, but it is not canon in the universe of the B89 comics or, presumably, the new Flash movie.

I consider Batman Forever connected to the previous two films, making it a trilogy. Seeing as how when Robin says "your family wasn't killed by a maniac." Bruce replies, "yes, they were." That's a reference to the Joker, obviously. Has the same Alfred. Same Gordon. Chase Meridian makes a to Catwoman when she says reference to Catwoman. Plus Burton was a producer. Least that's my view on it.

Actually, these movies ARE connected to the Burton verse based on the following: -Same Alfred -Same Gordon -The woman who played Gossip Gerty in the Schumacher films is also the reporter with no makeup on in the 1989 movie and the lady in Batman Returns who said, "He's like a frog that became a prince". -Harvey Dent was in the 1989 movie and then, he becomes Two-Face in Batman Forever. -There's a photo of Arnold Schwarzenegger on Max Shreck's photo wall in Batman Returns (foreshadowing his role as Mr. Freeze in Batman and Robin). -Joker is still the killer of Batman's parents based on Robin's comment ("Your family wasn't killed by a maniac") to which Batman responds ("Yes, they were). Further proof is how the gunman in the Wayne murders flashback in Batman Forever looks just like young Joker. -Bruce's "revenge has become your whole life" speech is a subtle reference to him killing Joker and Penguin. Another reference to their deaths is a deleted scene where Two-Face calls out Batman for being a killer. -Catwoman is referenced twice ("Do I need skin tight vinyl and a whip?")("Why are all the gorgeous ones homicidal maniacs?? Is it me???") -Vicki Vale is referenced ("I haven't had much luck with women".) -When the 1997 batmobile is introduced, Alfred says, "Do try and bring this one back in one piece, sir" (referencing what happened to the 1989 batmobile and the 1995 batmobile). I think the Flash movie is doing what Avengers: Endgame did like creating alternate universes. It already created an alternate version of Man of Steel where Superman never came to earth while Supergirl arrived instead.

I think you may be over-analyzing whether it's in the same timeline a little bit too much. Besides, books that came later that tell different stories are just revisionism and retconning. This film makes it pretty clear there is a connection to the previous two. The fact that comics, decades later write something different doesn't change what actually happened 30 years ago.

Batman Forever was the first Batman movie I saw in a theater. I remember it so vividly. I'll admit that I love this movie probably more than I should. I remember in the early days of the internet, I read about 40 minutes of footage that would have completely changed the film and I always wanted to see it. When the Blu ray came out, I finally got to see them and it was true. Recently I read that Kevin Smith had seen the infamous "Schumacher cut" and I'm still dying to see it. And I'm not gonna lie...the lighting in this movie is pretty epic lol As for our old friend Billy Dee Williams, perhaps if Tim Burton had directed and Robin Williams had been cast the Riddler, Billy would have fit right in.

As infamous as the bat-nipples are today, at the time the idea was to create a suit that reflected human anatomy more. Thus they modeled the suits on Greek and Roman statues.

At the time, there was a LOT of talk about how dumb it was. I remember, because i lived through it. And let's be real...Schumacher had a lot of homo-eroticism in the film, because...well, he's gay. And i say this as a queer person myself. But the nipples and the tight asses (and the close-up shots of both) all are intentionally erotic.

Honestly, I think this movie is underrated. It gets a lot of flack from comic book movie fans, but I really enjoyed it. With the exception of the bat-nipples, I thought it had a good balance of light-hearted cheekiness + darkness. Yes, in hindsight, Two-Face was not an accurate representation, but if you can get over that and just see him as an original villain, then the movie still works well. I thought Chris O'Donnell was a great Robin. At the time, I bought the comic book that was based on this movie. I still remember how pleasantly shocked I was Nicole Kidman was in this movie. I love her!

I do not know what the box office take of it was at the time. I did not follow box office numbers at all back then like I do now. But, I do vaguely remember even back then, there were complaints that it was too comical at times (at least compared to how darker Batman Returns was) and some fans hated Tommy Lee Jone's portrayal. Just like now, people loved Jone's acting, but not how Two-Face was portrayed. No doubt, though, the movie was more loved back then than it is now. I guess people going back and watching this now with a modern comic book movie mentality, will inevitably try to compare it to now. I do remember all the flack the movie got even back then over the bat-nipples. LOL, it's actually interesting to me the bat-nipples got a lot of hate, but hardly anybody seemed to have much of a problem with the bat-butt. You know how divisive we comic book movie fans can be with just about everything, LOL! If comic book movie fans can complain about something in a movie, they will find it, LOL! I also remember Batman Returns got a lot of flack from some fans. If anything, it seems Batman Returns got a lot more love over the years since it came out and Batman Forever got more hate over the years since it came out.

Someone probably mentioned this already, but Joel Schumacher's vision for this movie was rather different than what we got. He wanted to go for a more psychological approach, to open Batman up and see what makes him tick. The studio got antsy about this after _Batman Returns_ and nixed most of the planned psychological aspect. I believe the opening was also recut to get to the action faster. I think the initial scene order was "open on Arkham Asylum where it's discovered Two-Face has escaped, then the scene with Bruce Wayne meeting Edward Nygma, seeing the Batsignal, THEN suiting up and the bank robbery"

Fun Fact: If u read the original Batman Forever first draft you're know everything from the final film was re-edit and some scenes were left out like the giant bat y'all saw coming at the Riddler, it was a whole sub-plot which was connected to the black book but WB cut it cause it was too dark but it's still online with extra deleted scenes. And the reason Val Kilmer Batman doesn't kill cause in Bob Kane and Bill Finger first run in Batman debut he did and when Robin appear he stopped killing and that's why Keaton Batman killed in the first two Batman movies.

The fight choreography received massive criticism when this came out (I saw it in theaters). This was part of the cancer known as “‘mtv music video style fight editing” era of the 90s where you couldn’t follow what was going on with it’s unnecessary zooms, quick cuts, and capturing a 3 sec fight choreo from 7 camera angles. This style would infest other action films until the matrix (1999) ushered in a far superior era of fight choreo, borrowing much from Hong Kong cinema.

Kilmer playing as Batman came across as mixed. At least that is what the reaction I got as a kid when I saw this movie. People wanted Keaton back but people from what I observed were willing to give Kilmer a chance seeing how he was an amazing actor coming off the success of Tombstone (1993). He shown everyone that he was amazing actor and could play a serious character with grit. Plus, he was in way better shape then Keaton and was taller then him. He basically had the Batman body type and height during the 90s era of the character. Also, add in that he did most of fight scenes from what I heard and what Joel the director said. He got credit for doing that including a heavy rubber suit as way. Last, take into account that Kilmer was a said Batman fan and enjoyed the comics. He would have fights with the director over the tone of the film and wanted to do right by the fans and the source material. Batman Forever would have done better had it kept a serious tone or piggy back off the tone that the Batman Animated Series had. I understand why WB wanted to distant themselves from Burton tone but they could have at least kept the serious tone to it. If you ask me, Kilmer was the perfect replacement for Keaton as Batman. He just got massively screwed off with the cartoonish tone of this movie and script. Imagine if this movie had the same tone and touch that Nolan gave to his Batman movies? Yeah this movie would have been off the chart and could have been the Batman Beings of the 90s at least. Sadly never happened and Kilmer ended up walking away from the Batman movie series. A smart move on his part after what is shown in Batman and Robin (1997)

Many of us who were there back in the day when the movie first came out considered it 'bad' not cause it was necessarily objectively 'bad' (it definitely wasn't 'very good' or great'), but back in those days there werent many comic book movies, so you had to WAIT to see the most popular comic book characters come out - the first two movies really really good, especially the first one, so everyone had hopes for the third one and it was really...different. Jim Carrey was the stand out performance of course, hilarious, but overall many people thought that they got Harvey Dent wrong, and a bunch of other stuff. Your reactions were HILARIOUS btw cause i havent seen this movie in a while lol, so i do appreciate it a lot more now

Mind-blowing fact - Tommy Lee Jones who played for Two-Face and Jim Carrey who played for Edward Nygma, Riddler, both of them did not get along. Jim Carrey was actually trying to be a gentleman and trying to be funny, Tommy Lee Jones was getting annoyed by him it got to the point where he became frustrated by Jim Carrey. During the Batman Forever premiere Jim Carrey said "Working with Tommy Lee Jones kinda like training a German Shepherd for the police".

While Tim Burtons Batman centered on the Dark Gothic theme tailor for Burtons style, Director Joel Schumachers Batman Forever was actually a cinematic take on the Batman 60's Televisions series. Batman/Bruce wayne played by Val Kilmer remained much on the same accord as Michael Keatons interpretation of the characters, but placed in a more cartoonish world. This direction completely through viewers off as they were akin to the prior Dark Gothic style. This mis direction continued with the next film Batman and Robin which sunk the film franchise, until Christopher Nolan took a more realistic approach to the character, creating a crime drama rather than just a superhero movie.

This film is uneven (and some of the best scenes ended up on the cutting room floor--you may want to look them up on KZbin), but it is the logical progression if you're trying to adapt the earliest Batman comics faithfully: - In his first year of stories in Detective Comics (1939-1940), Batman fought a mix of gangsters, eccentric madmen, and truly monstrous villains straight out of a 1930s horror movie. In that time, Batman was rather cavalier about killing his enemies, feeling that it was justified at times. - At the start of his second year (1940-1941), he took in Dick Grayson, and he suddenly had a shift in character: he grew to disdain killing and soon gave it up altogether. He allied himself with the police rather than acting as a solo vigilante. And the villains became more colorful and over-the-top. In other words, the first three Batman movies follow his classic character arc in the Golden Age of comics. It's his journey from being an antihero driven by vengeance to a superhero driven by justice. (That might sound familiar to anyone who has watched the most recent Batman movie!) And it illustrates the oft-said sentiment that Batman needs a Robin. Without a sidekick to mentor, Bruce Wayne lacks the ability to rein himself in and be a true hero rather than a Dirty Harry. ...Oh, and this movie had deathtraps, just like the classic comics. That's a big plus.

In defense of the nipples on the bat suit … lol So I had always heard that Joel Schumacher wanted the batsuit to resemble those old Greek statues, which of course were always made with incredible physiques and had nipples on them. It’s the reason why there’s these MASSIVE statues in Gotham now. The imagery is meant to make Batman seem like an Ancient Greek god or myth, instead of a man in a suit. It’s still weird by modern standards … but regardless I don’t even notice the nipples anymore when I watch the movie. It just … doesn’t matter lol

Originally the opening scene was going to show where Harvey escaped from Arkham. Big fan of the whole series. I do like this one, came out when I was a young teen. Do wish Burton & Keaton came back but WB as you know now wasn’t happy with Burton & Keaton wanted more money & didn’t really care to do it without Burton. Yes they paid off Billy Dee to get out of his contract. Funny Tommy didn’t like working with Carey(originally was going to be Robin Williams as Riddler). Marlon Wayans was contracted to be Robin & since they didn’t use him he still gets checks for it lol There is a comic adaptation of a story that takes the place of this movie written by the original writers and features Billy Dee as Two-Face & Marlon as Robin

I was always disappointed by Two-Face in the film. They never really play up his dual personality until the very end, and otherwise, he's just a Joker clone. Jones had so much more to give that role than what we got. This film and the next (Batman and Robin) are still "kind of" in the Burton Batverse, but also kind of not. Think of them as a very similar, but slightly different reality with a lot of parallels.

I really liked the portrayal of Harvey Two-Face in the Arkham series. The two personalities bounced off of each other in a believable way. "The only way we can survive is to get ourselves some respect." "FEAR. THAT'S HOW THEY'LL RESPECT US." "...But we should be fair. This is a place of justice, after all." "SCREW JUSTICE. KILL HER AND THEY'LL ALL FEAR US."

Tommy Lee Jones straight up told Jim Carrey "I Hate You" on set because everytime Jones was being funny, Jim Carrey would 1 up him. Tommy Lee hates his guts to this day.

I have a fun memory of going to the movies to see this. I was 4 when this came out. My sister and I were scared of the dark. As soon as the movie went dark her and I cried. We didn't last long in there my dad was pissed off cause he was a huge Jim Carrey fan lol and my mom was just telling him that she knew it was a bad idea to take us. This was in Mexico by the way where the movie theater is a luxury because it's very expensive

When the studio picked Michael Keaton, it wasn't well received because he was a goofy comedian, and not physically imposing. It's kind of like if they'd picked Tom Hanks, who also started off as a skinny comedian.

For the POV of some one who never read comics but saw Addam West, Two Face, Poison Ivey, Bane, Clayface, Man Bat, Killer Crock, Mr. Scarface, Baby Doll, Scare Crow, Ras are all new faces any time you see them in any thing. I learned a lot more Bat rouges from Bruce Tim's works and also from Batman Brave and the Bold's series. and also Pig and Toad , Anarchy they came in from Bewar the Batman and cared on in to Gotham So I did go in to these knowing only the Addam West lore then got in to the Bruce Tim Stuff after this movie before the next one. Which Bruce Tim was the origin for Harley Quin and a few others. So when you see her in live action, that's an adaptation.

This wasn’t that bad of a movie but it was borderline. Jim Carey was too over the top. There was no enticing storyline. The Burton movies were much more story driven from Bruce after all these years it turns full circle that he would come face to face with his parents killer the Joker. In returns the Catwoman story was sensational with her being this lowly timid woman to this ferocious femme fatale. The penguin from being thrown away by his parents to become this criminal mastermind. In this movie they were just there everybody stayed the same throughout the whole movie. Now Batman and Robin that’s something else can’t wait til y’all react to that one.

To be fair, Batman had a wonderful character arc in the movie, but they cut it out at the last minute! His suppressed guilt is over the fact that he blames himself for insisting that his family go to the movies that fateful night, but then he finds his father's old journal and discovers that he wasn't to blame after all. Thus, he is finally able to be Batman by choice rather than doing it out of guilt. Some elements of this arc are still present in the finished film, but two or three key scenes were cut, so it's not fleshed out.
