When King's Island in Cincinnati, OH was owned by Paramount, they had an Indiana Jones mine car rollercoaster. 8 year old me loved it when it opened in 1991. We lived close enough to the park that commercials for the ride were on TV with Saturday morning cartoons. Waiting for our trip to King's Island that summer seemed like an eternity. Now that the park is no longer owned by Paramount, it was rebranded as "Adventure Express" it just doesn't have the same magic that it did 32 years ago.

Fun Facts: The exterior of Pankot Palace was realised through the use of both matte paintings & a set constructed at Elstree Studios here in the UK. The bridge & village sequences were filmed in Sri Lanka….oh & the bats are fruit bats, not vampire bats. Harrison Ford suffered a severe spinal disc herniation by performing a somersault while filming the scene with the assassin in Jones's bedroom. A hospital bed was brought on set for Ford to rest between takes. Lucas stated, "He could barely stand up, yet he was there every day so shooting would not stop. He was in incomprehensible pain, but he was still trying to make it happen." The guard crushed by the roller was played by Pat Roach; the same actor who played the Nazi guard who is diced by the plane in Raiders!!! He also played General Kael in Willow….which is also well worth watching!! Interestingly Temple of Doom isn’t actually the second film. If you go by the years the films are set in the sequence goes as follows. Temple of Doom - 1935 Raiders of the Lost Ark - 1936 Last Crusade - 1938 Kingdom of The Crystal Skull - 1957 Indy 5 title tbc - 1960s (this based on them recreating the NYC welcome home parade for the Apollo 11 astronauts in Glasgow & also from what I saw on the location shoot in North Yorkshire)

Another great reaction! 😊 As I mentioned on Patreon this movie, and the movie "Gremlins", prompted the very first PG-13 rated movies. Loved how you noticed the Club Obi-Wan in the beginning. 4:34 - 4:38 Fun Fact: The guy that walks Indy, Willie, and Short Round to the plane is a cameo by American actor Dan Aykroyd. I highly recommend the Ghostbusters movie series that he's in. 8:44 - 9:50 One of my favorite scenes of the movie. Indy and Short Round arguing over their poker game. While Willie tries to get away from the wildlife. 17:34 - 17:51 This is the scene that made this a PG-13 rated movie. And it's the scene that still creeps me out til this day. This is a good movie. It's difficult to rate this one. Because 'Raiders of the Lost Ark" and the next one "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" usually ties as my favorite of the Indiana Jones movies. Thank you for loving this and NOT hating on Willie! She was deliberately not like Marion to give Indy a different type of love interest, an "indoor" girl - one out of her element. And she provided a lot of fun comedy. I know I'll get a lot of hate for liking her character, but so be it. George and Steven wanted a different love interest (like Bond) for each movie. That's also why this was set in 1935, one year before Raiders in 1936 - so Marion is still in Nepal during the events of this movie. Please watch Last Crusade as well as Crystal Skull - Crystal Skull also gets too much hate. I love it as much as the others.

@mattp6089
@mattp6089 2 жыл бұрын
Willie was a good character idea realised poorly. In the end the result is annoying character though. Fish out of water but has an arc and eventually rises quite a bit to the terrible situation. That's solid grounding. Not sure Kate Capshaw was ever the problem. I'm sure she was directed to play Willie that way. Great Indy movie, still the weakest of the trilogy. I don't count that 'other' movie. I feel like a fan edit that took out a few of the more ridiculous Willie screams, especially the 'off-camera' ones, cut the 'We're not sinking, we're crashing.' line and made a couple of tweaks would greatly improve the character. Because that punch in the mine cart, that's a golden character moment.
@christopherwall2121
@christopherwall2121 Жыл бұрын
Here's a fun fact for you: a lot of the action scenes in this movie were planned for _Raiders_ but got cut because there's only so much you can put in one movie. This includes the raft scene, the mine cart chase, and the whip vs sword fight. Kate Capshaw suffered almost as many mishaps in filming as her character did: she got a shiner when part of the board Key He Quan hit one if the big guys with broke, and a big piecechit her eye (the crew showed up the next day with black eyes painted on); had a couple near-panic attacks filming the scenes with snakes and bugs (Willie tossing that snake away is all that remains of a longer scene that got cut); one of the elephants ate that vintage dress she wears in the Shanghai scenes and they had to claim insurance and rebuild it before doing pick-ups and reshoots. Amrish Puri shaved his head for this role and kept it that way until he retired from acting, and apparently in his day he was India's answer to Christopher Lee: the guy you get when you need an imposing bad guy.

While I understand why Willie annoys people, I sort of relate to her the most of the 3 main female side characters in these movies. While I'm not obsessed with jewelry and money like she is, and I also don't scream like her, I'd probably be as freaked out/ hesitant to do these adventury things as she was. Can't say I'd be as brave as Short Round even though he's younger than me. I think they did a decently realistic job of having a character out of place in an adventure movie.

For me, Temple of Doom is one of the most underrated movies of all time. It goes balls-out in the action and absurdity so you have to admire its daring, even if it's not your cup of tea. The relationship between Indy and Short Round is such a breath of fresh air, and Ford has never been more charismatic in a movie. I am perplexed, though, that they didn't go with the obvious choice of making Willie gradually adapt (just a bit) to the increasingly extreme events around her. I appreciate initially making her completely different from Marion, and to have her be this prissy queen... but that only really works for the audience if she's allowed to undergrow character growth. And yet, they didn't do that. I have to think SOMEONE along the way suggested it, and George Lucas/Spielberg just rejected the idea.

This film also contributed to the establishment of the PG-13 rating. It was also banned by the Indian government due to negative and stereotypical portrayals of Indian culture (particularly the dinner scene and the Thuggee Cult). •For better or worse (mostly worse), yes, Willie Scott is the love interest. •My senior year of college, I took a course on Modern China, from the Qing Dynasty to the Present Day. Nurhaci was the Jurchen general who reorganized the Jurchen Tribes into the Manchu people and then began the conquest of the Ming Dynasty, eventually founding the Qing Dynasty that ruled China from 1636 to 1912. •Yes, but probably don't try it in real life. •For the record, none of the foods depicted at dinner are actually Indian cuisine. •Nobody does. •The mines inspired many rides and video game levels.

Notice how this movie is actually set BEFORE the first Indiana Jones movie, technically making this a prequel. I think they did it that way so that Indy could have Willie as a sort-of-love interest without messing up the relationship with Marion that was established in the first (chronologically: second) film. Indy and Willie seem to be on reasonably good terms as this movie ends, and maybe they had some kind of fling that lasted for a little while, but then they went their separate ways ... leaving Indy free to resume his relationship with his old flame Marion as recounted in "Raiders of the Lost Ark".

ToD gets a bad rap, but it's my favorite of the IJ movies. Unlike Raiders, Indy actually accomplishes something other than killing bad guys - he rescues hundreds of children from slavery and returns a sacred artifact to the village. And Short Round is the best! I sincerely hope Ke Huy Quan will take up the mantle of the series once Harrison retires the character. I would love to see him tilt the hat up and say "Dr. Round" My headcanon is that Shiva delivers Indy to the village to save his people. And because the cult is using the name Kali for a diety that is clearly not Kali 👹 Shiva would be displeased by this depiction. By invoking Shiva's name against Mola Ram in the finale, he causes the shankara to ignite but isn't burned by the one he catches.

I’m one of the few who actually liked Kate Capshaw and thought their tryst was an amusing diversion. The Willy Scott character gets unfairly derided. It’s ok to have a reluctant heroine who does just enough to warrant respect. Marion had her moments of dependence. Not as many, but they were there.

Love your reaction, as always! You were so on edge throughout the whole reaction that it was making ME anxious. This is definitely the darkest of the Indiana Jones films. Yep. This is what we watched as kids! Willie is comedic relief. She’s not meant to be a real love interest, as Indy only has one real love. Unfortunately, most people just find Willie annoying. I think she’s hilarious, and, if I’m honest, if I was in those situations I’d probably react the same way. Except for perfuming the elephant.

I wanna know from Addie.... If you were in Willie's place, and instead of bugs it was SNAKES, would you have the courage to overcome your fear and help your friend escape certain death? I'll even make it easy for you - the snakes are all HARMLESS little garter snakes. 🙂

Eyeball soup... from watching what you eat, to what you eat watching you. That's a hard pass for me. "Excuse me, waiter, but my soup has eyeballs in it! It doesn't look good at all!" "On the contrary, sir, that soup looks excellent ; it has 20/20 vision!"

A few years after 'Temple of Doom' came out, Steven Spielberg met up again with Kate Capshaw (Willie)...they were both single and they fell in love. She converted to Judaism, and they are now one of the major power couples in Hollywood. Kate had a daughter from her previous marriage, who is also an actress. Her name is Jessica Capshaw, she is probably best known for her role on 'Grey's Anatomy' as pediatric surgeon Dr. Arizona Robbins. This is not my favorite of the Indiana Jones movies...the next one is. 'Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade' is by far my favorite...specifically for the main co-star with Harrison Ford, the late Sir Sean Connery. These are two of my absolute favorite actors, and their chemistry is amazing. The actor who plays Mola Ram I have only ever seen in two English language films, this one and 'Gandhi' (which is a superb film about the Mahatma Mohandas K. Gandhi). However, he was a major character actor in the Indian film industry. He is best known and loved in India for the Bollywood film 'Diwale Duhania La Jayenge (The Braveheart Takes The Bride)' probably the most successful Indian film ever made. It still plays in theaters today, I believe. In that film, he plays the father of the main female character and won a Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor (India's equivalent of the Oscar). I have a love of Indian films...so when I first saw DDLJ, it messed with my head seeing Mola Ram as a loving father. But even in India, he was a major "villain' actor. Ke Huy Quan (Short Round, sometimes called Jonathan Quan) recently returned to acting in 2022 in the film 'Everything, Everywhere, All At Once' winning some raves for his performance, alongside his co-star Michelle Yeoh.

Hehe.. that a girl Addie.. Not as much snake in this one.. but a lot of bugs.. and just so you know.. those were eels coming out of the dead boa at the dinner table. :D Glad you weren't too hard on Willie. I think she(Capshaw) played the character well as anyone could.. the annoying city girl love interest.. also part of the comic relief. Vast difference to Marion.. the street smart tomboy love interest. The jump scare is real.. have you ever seen a whole theatre jump at the same time.. Hehe.. I had a hell of a time with my gf at the time.. she just squirmed/jumped/screamed through the whole movie. Obviously this was my favourite of the trilogy 20 yrs ago.. but in time I think Last Crusade has become my fav.. mostly due to certain actor(s) in the next film of the trilogy and has aged better than say.. Temple of Doom or The Lost Ark. Any who.. can't wait for the next Indy film!

This was my least favorite Indy film until they had the new films. Also you are not the first person to dislike Indy and Willy together... But to the actress's credit she was quite good in the movie "Space Camp". You should definitely consider seeing it. It also features Leah Thompson and Tom Skerritt. Love your reactions Addie. This movie is better made as an adventure movie, it's more structured and ongoing than the first one. I like both 1 and 2 for different reasons, unlike most who dislike this one. And, Willy is not AS MUCH a damsel in distress as some claim her to be. No, she's no Lara Croft but herself. Not everyone is a badass. Furthermore, Short-round is supposed to be the sidekick here, not Willy.
