He also said it was difficult figuring out the role. He knew he could never upstage Jim Carrey, but he didn't just want to play a dumb person, so he specifically played someone with an IQ of 8. And he tried to make it so that Harry had a delay as his brain tried to process things. So there are a lot of times where someone says something to him and he just stares at them for a second with his mouth open.

It doesn't hurt that despite the well beyond over-the-top comedy that Carrey puts on screen in this, he plays it so damn seriously. Like his hilarity is actually the straight man of the duo. He's extremely serious about the girl and the relationship, so there is a weight to the story, but everything surrounding it is a repeated gut punch of hilarity.

18:45 Jeff Daniels is quite the guy. I worked with him in the movie "The Crossing" in which he played George Washington and I played one of his soldiers. I talked to him a bit during our lunch break and it was really cool that I learned a few things about my own cousin from HIM. Between takes, Mr. Daniels kept yelling "What's the score?" He was referring to the Detroit/Toronto hockey game. (We were filming in Toronto), so when we were chatting at lunch I started the conversation off with, "So I assume, you're a Detroit fan." to which he confirmed. I told him my cousin played for Detroit with Gordie Howe in the 50's and won the Stanley Cup twice. Jeff Daniels asked me who my cousin was, I told him Leo Reise. He replied "Wow, your cousin is "Radar" Reise?" I hadn't known about Leo's nick name. Then Jeff went on to tell me that Leo scored the winning goal in the semi finals against Toronto, preventing Toronto from winning 4 cups in a row. (That I knew), but what I didn't know was that Gordie Howe once said in an interview that it was Leo's slapshot from the blue line, winning the game, that eventually propelled them to win the Stanley Cup that year. I thought it was pretty cool learning all of this.

The big, tough trucker guy at the cafe…the “Sea Bass” character is played by Cam Neely, an NHL Hall of Famer. One of the best power forwards to ever play…and he was/is huge. 6’3” 235lbs when he played. A no joke, huge tough guy and hardcore player, who also scored a bunch. He was a huge star in hockey when this came out. He’s now the president of the Boston Bruins (the team he famously played for). These directors are huge New England area sports fans and they put a lot of star athletes (especially guys who play in New England/northeast part of the US) in their movies in small roles.

Public data says that Neely is 185 cm while both Daniels (190) and Carrey (188) are actually taller than him, so it's not like he was chosen for being 'huge' (but the scene is done in a way that leaves you with the impression that he is a much bigger guy)

Jeff Daniels said once that out of all the movies he's been in he's most proud of this one. He's a dramatic actor. For comedians it's easier to switch to a dramatic character but for a dramatic actor it's very difficult to do comedy.
@Eowyn187
@Eowyn187 Ай бұрын
There's an episode of Two and a Half Men that actually showcases that. It's the reason I got what you meant here. I was stunned at how bad a few of them were at the switch-up. FUN FACT: The filmmakers originally wanted Lloyd and Harry to get on that bus full of women at the end. But Jim Carrey stopped them and insisted that, because the movie is literally called "Dumb and Dumber", they're supposed to be dumb enough to NOT get on that bus. And honestly, it's a GOOD ending! Because to be fair, Lloyd and Harry's friendship almost got destroyed a couple of times over women. If they did get on that bus full of women, what would've happened to their friendship? When they said they're gonna catch their break, they probably meant a break from women. It goes to show what good, real friends they are and how much they care about their friendship.

This is a movie that features so much really stupid comedy, but it's just so darn hysterically done. I couldn't watch this movie without laughing if I tried.

I think it's because we've all had moments like these with out friends. Moments where we're just off the wall idiotic together, or so wasted stupid tired, or whatever. Things like this only happen between people who are really good friends, so the movie has this weird undercurrent of actual real friendship despite being such an over-the-top comedy. So over the top that it goes from making you wince to being perfection again.

@@nsasupporter7557 - I know there's plenty of folks who won't agree, and I grew up watching Dumb and Dumber (born in 1990), but Zoolander is one movie that I hold in similar regard. Really stupid, but also some really hysterical and clever humor in there.

Fun fact: THe director wanted a happy ending for them with the bikini girls but Jim carrey told them if they had that ending with the bikini girls, it destroys the purpose of the title itself dumb and dumber. So, he says he needs to live up to that narrative of being dumb men not getting the girls in the end.

The part of me that pays attention to details always catches the mistake in the scene where they claim they are going the wrong direction. To go westward into Colorado, one would expect the sun to enter from the driver's side. When going the wrong way (eastward), one would expect the sun to enter from the passenger's side. The sun entered from the driver's side, suggesting that the scene was shot with them going the CORRECT direction.
