Hi guys, I’ve been receiving complaints about the style of editing for this episode. While it’s not the conventional method of a reaction, multiple edits of this episode have been copyrighted and the main reason was the audio. I have tried to work around this but it is proving to be hard. I will be more vigilant for the next set of episodes but please note that this is due to copyright.

I don't think the editing was too bad... Thank you for reacting to this series, it's probably my favourite miniseries ever. BTW I googled the Bhopal disaster, and I'm so sorry, it was so horrible! We in Europe didn't learn about it (at least in school; I was born after it happened). I don't know if this is a spoiler, so I'll put it below a lot of dots: . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . it was waaaaaaaaaaaaay worse than Chernobyl. According to an article I found, about 100x worse.

One thing to keep in mind is something said repeatedly in this episode. It may appear the plant managers were being stubborn and obtuse, but the Soviet designed RBMK reactor, because of its design, was created so that an explosion was impossible when operating. They truly believed in good faith this was never a possibility.

it was shot well, I agree, but otherwise it’s a vile lie, just ordinary propaganda, albeit skillfully shot. The Soviet Union (and especially the government) is bad, Europe and America are good. Socialism is bad, capitalism is good. For some reason, everyone forgets about the accidents in Japan and at the Three Mile Island nuclear power plant in Pennsylvania, although the authorities there were unable to repeat the feat that they did in Chernobyl.

Bhopal and Chernobyl are an apples-and-oranges situation. The only thing that are similar are causes boiling down to willful negligence motivated by cost/time cutting and criminal handling of information flow in those crucial first hours, where there was still time to limit casualties. In a way, Bhopal was a more clear-cut case. The weight of gas limited the ability of gas to be moved by wind. If the chemical plant wasn't in the borders of a 1M ppl large city surrounded by many smaller towns, the amount of victims could have been very small. Unfortunately, it wasn't - but all the affected came from the path of the cloud. Ultimately, it was possible to identify them, reach them and help them... and count them. Chernobyl was the opposite in most of those regards. It was not a densely populated area (in comparison), but even so, only the firefighters and plant workers were affected in a most direct fashion - but the lethal factor was lingering on site and in the area and in a diluted form, spread over half of Europe. The number of affected is impossible to tell. In Bhopal, a million maybe two had contact with the lethal factor - and most of them have suffered some effects. In Chernobyl, number of people who had some contact with the lethal factor, was counted in hundreds of millions - but most of them wasn't affected at all. Probably. Because how one can tell what were the causes of the cancer one is diagnosed with? Ultimately, the numbers end up being comparable. Low five digits of dead within a year. Several hundred thousand of sick/wounded in various degree - but in the case of Chernobyl this is mostly a guesstimate.

One other thing they have in common: the criminals at the top (the Union Carbide Corporation's senior management for Bhopal, the senior members of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union and relevant government agencies for Chernobyl) escaped significant consequences.
@2012Ragnvald
@2012Ragnvald 4 ай бұрын
@@Big_Bag_of_Pus the difference is only in one smaaaall detail: the leadership of the USSR and the Communist Party are essentially not to blame for the disaster at Chernobyl (because no one expected such behavior of the reactor, no one knew about it and could not know, these were one of the first models of reactors in the world, so they simply contained such a hidden possibility of self-destruction, which accidentally arose during tests at a nuclear power plant), and the management of Union Carbide in Bhopal was directly responsible for the disaster, since they completely consciously saved on everything and did not comply with the required safety measures and production rules, which led to an accident.

Nice review as always...edit challenges aside (good luck finding the sweet spot going forward). I think this is the 2nd best mini-series I've ever seen (after Band of Brothers). HBO did a very good (not perfect job) with this. Full Disclosure....I have a degree in Nuclear Engineering...this happened just after I had graduated and got my first job after school. Yes...there are some things that are dramatized (for example...the black smoke from the fire...in reality there was NOT the much smoke...but for the viewers it gives an indication of what the wind is doing carrying the radioactive particles across the land scape). One thing that should be clarified: there was not a nuclear explosion in the sense of an atomic bomb...but there was an explosion that "broke" the core and blasted core components (the graphite) all around the site. Those components were HIGHLY radioactive). I look forward to your next installment. A suggestion for a "fun" series to review after this would be One Piece. Then to return to "difficult" drama I would love to see you review the new Master of the Air series that is on Apple TV+ right now. Made by the same folks who did Band of Brothers (not as good as BoB, but I think better than The Pacific).

On wearing gas masks ... I'm not sure, but I think that masks are of limited use because the hazard is radiation, which simply penetrates whatever parts of the body are exposed to it. It's not like gas or a virus that can only enter through breathing. On the other hand, I suspect that later on masks would be useful in blocking out dust particles that are radioactive, after some of the general atmospheric radiation goes away. I'm happy to be corrected on all of this!

A little late watching this reaction. But as you have seen the whole series now, can you see that the decision to evacuate right away could actually have caused a larger disaster? I'm not saying it was a sound decision. But if all resources had been used to evacuate, the assessment of the situation may have been delayed enough that the meltdown couldn't be halted and half the continent could have been contaminated. It's one of those disasters where you wish it hadn't happened at all. But as it did, maybe it then went on in the right way. It could have been much much worse...

You should look up if Bhopal was constructed with any parts or specs from Soviets. For a long time, India was "neutral" in the Cold War and had many cooperative industrial programs with the Soviet Union. India was happy to receive Soviet aid because it was cheap, and NATO countries and their allies were stingy with aid to India because of India's refusal to disavow the Soviets and Communism. When the USSR collapsed (due to the deathblow of Chernobyl following the disastrous war in Afghanistan), these realities altered. It would definitely be in the realm of possibility.

You're stupid? All information about Bhopal is available on the internet. Use Google. If he fails, just in case, I’ll say here - the chemical plant in Bhopal belonged to the American chemical-industrial corporation Union Carbide. And the Americans, in general, didn’t give a damn about the troubles of the Indians. Also, in general, as well as on the lives of the Vietnamese, Iraqis, Yugoslavs, Afghans, and everyone else who died in the name of US-style democracy in 120 conflicts unleashed by the Americans around the world over the past 70 years.

I was born in Cosmopolis in 1968. At the time of the accident I was starting my studies in communications at Moscow University. That's why we received a lot of information about the accident. Some things were changed for the series. The first is that Valery Legasov was director of the former Kurshatov institute. He was very respected, Viktor Charkov would not have had the power to arrest him! Another thing, Legasov was never detained by the KGB. On the contrary, he led the inspection program in the renovations of the other plants. In 1986, the state no longer had the power to detain people. We were already living in more democratic times. If I knew what was happening, everyone knew. It really hit Gorbachev hard that the nuclear program was outdated. But Nikolai Fomin was responsible for the Court. I don't know what happened to him.

@@greensky3152 You did not understand. Yes, the KGB arrested people, but the series greatly distorted her involvement. In 1986, the incident was not reported at first because it was a case of national security. The same happened in the USA when there was a similar accident, after all it was the Cold War, and you couldn't simply expose the engineering of a nuclear plant to the world. What I'm saying is that the KGB's involvement was distorted in the series. In the series, the KGB intimidates scientists all the time to keep everything secret. In fact, on the fifth to sixth day, scientists from Sweden and Germany were in the USSR to help with containment leaking north! It became very public. Regarding the issue of graffiti, there was no need to tell anyone to know how it happened. It is portrayed as if the reason for the explosion had amazed everyone. We all knew about the Shutdown Mechanism, the accident was a human engineering failure! The KGB did not pursue Lergasov. The series shows him being coerced and prevented from talking to people. That's a lie, I myself went to his lecture in Gohg, and in Moscow, shortly before he passed away. He has also appeared on television. Finally, countering your comment, you don't have to be in the USSR to be aware of the lies the government tells!

@@2012Ragnvald People don't understand that Hollywood distorts facts to make something more attractive. My biggest revolt of all is the way Gorbachev appears in the series. Yes, I hate Gorbachev, but that's no reason to encourage a false image of him. In the series he is pretentious and arrogant, always appearing not to be seriously moved by the event. Gorbachev was party secretary, he was not notified immediately, because it was not his responsibility. But when he found out, he gave orders to evacuate and help the affected families. He even visited them later. In one scene, he is lurking in several international newspapers, implying that his only concern was with the USSR's image in the world. He didn't care about it at the time, he even canceled all meetings in the current EU precisely to focus on the accident.

Everyone you meet in this episode who has a name is a real person. Concerning the denial: You had to pretend that the Soviet Union was a worker's paradise where nothing ever went wrong. Perception trumped reality. If you surfaced a problem, it ws all your fault. They set out to build a tractor factory. Work fell behind schedule, but no one wanted to take the hit, so the paperwork kept on moving on schedule. Finally the fire marshall showed up to inspect and found a cement slab. Concerning radiation: People were told that radiation was good, it cured cancer, it was a sign of technological progress, and if the Americans nuke us, Civil Defense has it covered. Concerning the calousness: Since the time of the Tsars, Russians have regarded the purpose of the people as to serve the State, not the other way around. Dyatlov really was like that, according to his survivng colleagues. Not all the time, but enough. He threatened people's jobs while living in determined denial.
