I love how every song in Vulnicura references and "revises" previous songs that Bjork wrote about love. "Atom Dance" is referencing and revising "Unison", and it has such a beautiful logic. The first 30 seconds of both songs are very similar in their structure, their timbre, and even the notes that they use... But the themes of "Atom Dance" start up where "Unison" ends. In "Atom Dance", Bjork is no longer in unison with her lover... instead, she claims a unison for herself: a unison with the world around her, and with the listener of the song. This is what will heal and sustain her. (And, of course, "Atom Dance" transforms, halfway through, into a musical duet which abruptly pulls the song into a new shape. It is the sudden unison of voices the signals the song breaking from "Unison"... and blooming into a new, more sustainable type of unison.)

We are each other’s hemispheres We aim at peeling off dead layers of loveless love No one is a lover alone Most hearts fear their own home Come in themselves fully It scares them all When you feel the flow as primal love Enter the pain and dance with me! if this song had a music video to go along with the beats and melodies I would definitely see 2 small atoms under a microscope, then zoom out to a spider dancing its web, then a bird caught in the rain, a thunder storm by the sea with waves crashing, lighting striking the earth and becoming roots under the soft wet ground... the climax of the song would be two snakes interwining and mating.... this is how I imagine this song to be like... very primal and yet so very simple...

I was guided to the stories of the heroes, and Venus told me to see myself when I look in her eyes. This had not occurred to me. I had always seen everyone else's eyes, but I had never seen my own. I reclaimed my sould this way. It is now my own again. The duality of my aspects has merged into one. My male and female have merged into one. My body and soul have merged into one. I now need no one, and am bound to no one. I am free, but I know I am the first because I am the herald. By virtue of being the first, I know that you wait for me now. You will be the second. I can call upon the gods and the goddesses to help me. Angels and demons bow to my will. The world of the material is inconsequential. I shall complete my journey in the world of symbols. When I have beaten all that is in my way, then I will return to the world of the material. Then I shall set your human free.

I see this as kind of a courtship/mating dance in some way when she proposes an atom dance. they are two hemispheres, the yin and yang, that come together to negotiate love. the 5/4 metre is reminiscent to that of traditional folk dances from across the world. this is a recurring theme in bjorks work - two souls, people, journeys, converging and meeting, coming to an agreement, discussing terms of peace. It feels very fitting that on an album like Vulnicura there is a track like this; at the beginning of any relationship, there is a subconscious 'atom dance', where the two parties propose an agreement of love and a trading agreement (i.e, support, affirmation, in exchange for physical touch, or the like). Conversely, it could be said, that an 'atom dance' invariably takes place at the ending of a relationship too, although at this point, the conversing is much more diplomatic and hardened. There is an account taking, an overview of the damage done and the consequences, and both parties try to move on with their lives after they have agreed to walk away. Of course the damage from heartbreak can never be fully forgotten and it plagues us when we try to start new relationshps, as seen in 'Courtship' from Utopia.

You clearly say the right things. I wonder how much you know of what and who you are. Your appearance has not only merged with me. You have grown now. You are not only my experience of being human. At present you appear to be the kitchen's experience of being a kitchen. I must be learning this dance well. Soon I may need a dance hall to contain it. Ultimately, I determine, an entire planet. The entire planet is gripped by forces that drag me lower. My dance must lift me a long way to maintain success. I am led to learn things, the secrets of what is coming. What is coming is not as good as being here. I must learn to let it go, and dance, but my curiosity is inbuilt. That is what brought me this far. There is so much darkness out there. I must replace it with my light. My light is still so small. It never goes out, but the darkness overwhelms me. I should stay here, but Persephone demands I continue to shine in the darkness. I am not allowed to stay for long. I am never allowed to stay for long. My strength grows as I fight the darkness. I am not alone when I am here, but I grow ever more alone, when I am not.
