They typically release the catfish to breed more. People will eat the younger ones. Once they get to a certain weight, they release them back. It's the same for a lot of fish. There are certain weight limits.

Not because of limits because they taste worse as they get bigger? Limits on catfish is very loose depending on where you at in the south.

They walk down the wall and they find holes in the water bank or the clay. It’s sand but it’s like clay and when they find the holes they stick their leg in there and they feel if there’s a fish and then when they put their arm in there the fish goes to bite you and it sucks up your whole arm and then you pull the fish out and stick your arm through the gills in fish to hold onto it them or catfish the big big ones are good you take them home, cut them up and you put flour in egg batter on them and you fry them up and we eat them with french fries in a little bit of vinegar or tartar sauce, or you can fry them up and eat them with grilled vegetables rice whatever you want

Hand fishing has evolved from a survival method into more of a sport. It is really very easy to collect hundreds of pounds of fish in a single afternoon. The fish are spawning and will not leave the holes. The fish will defend the spawn and bite anything intrusive. The spawn only lasts about 1 month, so it is back to rod or trap the rest of the year.

There is purpose in sustaining the skills to catch fish for sustenance. In our current situation, such skills are rarely needed. Nonetheless, there is value in perpetuating these skills as none of us knows what the future holds. In the meantime, since they don't need the fish to sustain themselves, I appreciate that they let them go.

After generations of noodling , people generally know where to locate the catfish. Which makes for a better time of it. In this country catch and release is a thing. Catching and eating is another thing and I think you pay more to do it. Licenses to do either can be purchased I believe, not really into fishing but I think that’s how it works.

They feel around for 'hollows' in the bank. If this opening has a muddy bottom it isn't being used to lay their eggs. If the entrance to this opening is sandy, a momma fish has been using a fin to clean it. There is likely a fish inside. Sometimes a very large fish. The purpose of catching, weighing, and letting it go is it is a sport. I'm sure sometimes they keep them for food. Purpose? What purpose does there need to be besides enjoyment?

Noodling can be dangerous but fun. The most common death by noodling are drowning and snakes. But you can also lose your fingers or toes if you find a hole with a snapping turtle inside and it bites ya. The fun part is when you get a good hole with a catfish and fight begins to get the bugger out. And it’s a chance to connect with family and friends.

Ive never ookie noodled in the US, but on a trip to Thailand, I went on a week long trek with some Hmong Hill Tribe guys up into the mountains to fish and camp. We lit fires on rocks overhanging the river upstream about a mile and spent the night catching fish. Some were caught under the rocks like this, and we caught others by hand just standing in the river waiting for them to sleepily drift by. We ate fish, wild veggies and fruit all week. The only thing we took was a bag of rice, that we cooked in huge bamboo logs.

What they are doing is, they are monitoring the size and ease of each catch, for future ability to tell how healthy they are, and quantity of the amount of Catfish are in the area. Basically, they are surveying the area, to make sure that there are still plenty, and the species aren't quickly dropping, for research, on their health and etc. There are group's of people, who do this, so they can tally up an estimated number of different fish in the area. Now, since you asked about how/why they were able to use their hand's & arm's, and not worry about getting bit with the teeth and etc. The answer to that is, that the Catfish has more of a "sandpaper" texture of gum's, instead of sharp teeth, like shark's do. And, I am sure that you noticed, while still in the water, they were still pretty docile. Which mean's, that they aren't going to bite you hard, or want to attack you, or get out of hand easily. But, when they do feel air, instead of water on their smooth skin, that's when they will want to get back in the water, and go deeper, like you saw in the video. Now, with this said, it's not the gum's, that you have to worry about, as it's the "whisker's", as they can "sting" you, with those whisker's, if they feel truly threatened. But, how they were handling them, while also petting them, it allowed them to not get stung by those whisker's, showing the fish, that they didn't want to harm them, but interact with them, for a moment, before releasing them. And, the gloves, were merely to protect their finger's from the gill's, which can be a bit sharp... Only edited for mistyping's, as I am not the best typist...LOL

Oh, I can't wait to watch you review weird American customs! We noodled carp in the big creek behind our house. The secret is when they sleep, they sleep close together and they are very lethargic. Of course, once you get your hands on it it wakes up! But if you can TIME the places certain fish sleep...and you don't mind sticking your hand under there and finding a snapping turtle. I'm delighted to see how big some of those are, some of them are "whole family meal" size! We liked them better as they are much easier to prepare (no scaling, just peeling) It's been a long time; but pehaps after rain, and a big feed. They love rain, and hide out when it is too sunny. (Like catching a chicken, the trick is to go in while it is sleeping at night and lift it right off the perch. Much easier than chasing them during the day!) Okay, that's a FEED THE NEIGHBORHOOD sized fish!!! Us kids waded in the water when it was sunny and it was low, so they were easier to spot to bring the adults later!

They are so good at catching Catfish that they don't need to keep them all. They already have a freezer full of fish. They have a fish fry twice a week for 10 years without ever going fishing again. The important part is that rural Americans can survive without grocery stores. We don't need tomatoes from Mexico. We grow them for ourselves. We raise hogs and rabbits and chickens too. We grow rhubarb and swiss chard, mustard greens and turnips. Y'all can do whatever you like, it won't make any difference.

Years of fishing at the same spots. You know where the hot spots are. Catfish are sort of cave dwellers. They look for openings in the riverbank and hide/sleep. They are attracted to movement and will attack. So, when the person sticks their hand in the cave, the catfish go for it.

Catfish that size are not good eating. Meat is tuff and full of worms. When they get this size it’s responsible and respectful to release. These are perfect breeding size. In America we release more than we keep. Catfish around 2 to 8lbs are what most people keep. Fishing is a sport here. We are not dependent on catching our food. We fish mainly for fun

It’s so deep and they’re trying to feel if there’s a fish because the fish back up in the hole very far and then when they find the fish they use the pole they use their arm they do whatever they can do to get the fish to try to bite them. That’s what the fish do. They suck in your whole arm like it’s a food or another fish and you pull the fish out because your hands all the way down their body inside it hurts if you look at her arm inside her arm it’s all red and cut up that’s from the fish biting her

There's really nothing in American rivers that can hurt you and the water is mostly clean, just stay away from the catfish dorsal spine. I've never noodled but I think they're feeling for the catfish with their feet, they locate them then they go down and pull them up. They have cats in India(the magur) right? I've been catfishing with a hawaiian sling and a snorkel before. Some local vietnamese guys here in Texas showed me how it's done. Catfish just hang out under the banks. Very easy to get dinner this way.
