RIFA NISHA MOLLAH Yes. It's really interesting to hear Abhijit using Bengali idiom: 'বেড়ালের ভাগ্যে শিকে ছেঁড়া'. Actually, no matter what you are, if you are a Bengali you can't escape from being so. It's not only a linguistic identity but a cultural identity too. Prof. Banerjee at MIT too chose to say a few words in Bengali during his felicitation on his winning the Nobel in Economics.

A brilliant but humble person with lots of graciousness and dignity, this latest Indian origin Nobel Laureate is .. and I say that after watching half a dozen talks and interviews available on KZbin!! My personal view.. Demonization was an artificially and irresponsibly created mega blunder turned into monstrous disaster for which the price is being paid in one way or other by every single Indian, industries, corporates, shopkeepers, and Indian economy has been geared into reverse spiral!! Just like after a natural disaster as earthquakes or hurricane, scientists find opportunities to study various aspects, now with this Modi created disaster has provided opportunity to many economists to study and assess after effects of this monumental disaster called 2016 demonization!! Hopefully this very arrogant and reckless regime of Modi will give essential weight to these studies and researches done by renowned economists all over the world, instead of beating the drums of false claims and distorted facts to counteract the views of all those highly knowledgeable and experts of the subject!!

This is a good discussion and is thought provoking. However, as is commonly known, academics are not involved in or good at managing businesses or countries. The current factors for the contraction of economies of countries are external. Almost all countries are going through economic slowdown. India is no exception. Australian economy is forecast at 1.3 growth .....a reduction from 2.8. India has diverse and complex factors that need to be taken into account. The key ones during these difficult times are minimising the adverse effects on the poor, maintaining internal and external security......and managing for growth. There is always a tension between ideology and reality. Running a country is more complex than economic modelling. For every one economist in favour of a theory, there are ten who hold contrary viewpoint.

Interesting discussion and to a great extent Dr. Banerjee is right about stimulating the demand to move the inventories down. Corporate Tax cutting at the time when corporations are loaded with cash and their investment in expansion plans are doubtful, is a bad move. The USA model, which is based on the similar tax cuts is already showing cracks in the growth planning. A better model would be one that will ensure increase in the labor productivity without increase in labor cost. However, both, the increase in purchasing powers and productivity simultaneously can be achieved if the planning is done with targeting the stimulation towards right segment of population-lower and middle income citizens.

With all due respect to Dr. Banerjee I beg to differ from him when he says that giving handouts doesn't mean that people will stop working. This has actually happened in Odisha after the govt introduced Re 1 per kg of rice and low cost meals for all. You go to any village, the land holders now don't find people to till and plough the land. This is primarily because the people who used to work to get money now get easy handouts from the govt. To fund such schemes the govt heavily uses profits made from the state run mining companies like Odisha Mining Corportation but they must realize that mining revenue is not everlasting, sooner or later the mining market may fluctuate and revenues may come down. So, giving out freebies instead of spending on skill building is a rather short-sighted and myopic view which will not have significant returns in the future.

@@pratipbanerjee4350 he's been around for years i think, a familiar prime time face of television media of a major channel ... Sindhu's was a hallmark in my opinion for Indian channel where he actually played badminton. Nevertheless, this one must accept it improved as it progressed during its course ... Hope your RCA was correct and he did get his lifetime chance...

@@Single_Charm-155 Though he's been around, if you go by camera looks he looks way younger than many contemporaries...so framewise it looked like an excited Indian taking an interview, as it was not the serious ones of like Mr.Thapar, so thik hai..not every interview needs to look that serious, and as I said..he could have not matched to his seriousness...right it went well as it went on

So does this journalist. Does he even seem to care about the answers. Journalists like fareed zakaria ask questions based on the previous answers given by the guest. He seems like a student who s been given a flurry of questions to cram and repeat in front of a headmaster walking.

Read Galbraith's book - "MONEY - Whence it came, where it went". It will help demystify priestly incantations of the "economists". John Galbraith, Kennedy's ambassador to India - himself an economist - has said only use of economists is to themselves.

One question: Giving cash to people wont solve the problem. Giving employment to people at rural areas , see what is ailing the agriculture ? Cash given is spend again next year the problem repeats itself. Current govt destroyed the people who were job givers . Micro managers of any nation , any organization , any team will fail miserably. People think the teacher with a stick is good but the students become useless after sometime. Govt must allow a few corruption , it is ok . If Modi wants to clean up everything then no one will be there .
