I use to work at Hollywood Park and the southern tracks back in the late 80's and early 90's. It was the best time of my life as I reflect back now. It is bittersweet watching this and seeing Hollywood Park, which is no longer there. What a shame. It was a beautiful track with some great races that took place over the years. I miss the track life and will never forget it.

Horse people just know how to do things right. It brings out the best of some and the worst in others. As far as the horses go . The horse is the only beast that runs into the battle. There is no other sound in the world, than the beating of the hoofs coming down the lane. Nothing is said about the relationship between the groom and a horse. The owners possess a horse but the groom is so proud you would think they own it , it's really a beautiful relationship

Love this film. Im old now but in my past life I was deeply involved in racing. In the US and here in Ireland. I was a work rider and galloped horses everywhere. Training Farms and on the track. Here in Ireland I worked with National Hunt horses (steeplechasing). I broke horses, rode work, schooled horses over fences. Also rode in races over fences, tho not alot and I have stories about how hard it was to be a woman! I busted my ass, literally broke my back, and truly Earned My Spurs. No regrets, I still get that hungry thrill when I see racehorses!

I grew up near a race track,summer job,worked as a cleaner after races, late 70,s,then i was a hotwalker for many seasons and worked for 1st class trainers and they had high end horses,i would get attached to certain horses and could tell a happy horse in mornings run well in afternoon i miss being around them,beautiful animals

This film is so beautiful ; I nearly cried. The guy that said once you get the bug there's no going back was right. I was bitten with one of the very first bets I made as a teenager at Beulah Park in Ohio. I hit a real nice trifecta without knowing what the heck I was doing. I thought right then and there "this is the game for me." Secretariat won the Triple Crown the year I graduated high school. This year, the Kentucky Derby is on my birthday. It really doesn't get a whole lot better. I love everything about this sport-so many wonder memories, especially with my buddy, Nut.

The best documentary I've ever seen discussing the industry that I have grown up in. It's in my blood, sweat, and tears. It's a passion that border's on a terminal illness . If it's running through your veins you'll understand that. I've been a lifelong fan, lover, guardian, protector, fanatic, gambler, trainer, owner, and driver of horse's. It's sad having watched the popularity go from the highs during the 60-70-80 to the closings of many racetracks in recent years. The racinos killed racing. They only cared about profitable earnings and not about horse racing. When you are in direct competition for the gambling dollar horse's will lose. The internet offer's too many different venues of betting. Namely sport's like basketball, football, baseball, hockey, etc all competing for people's disposable dollar's. Let's not forget casinos. We see millions of them cheering their criminal presidents, and we see millions of them chanting USA USA USA, (just like the Nazi's). And we have never seen a single American, stand up against it, let alone start demanding it stops. Why not? 2018, Teresa May announces British strikes on Syria, within 3 hours, literally hundreds of thousands of people are stood outside Parliament protesting against it. 2018, Emmanuel Macron announces French strikes on Syria, later that evening in Paris, hundreds of thousands of people are protesting against it. 2015, Russia exposes the USA to the American people and the entire world for supporting and supplying terrorists in Syria, and still, 6 years later, not one American has even condemned it, let alone protested against it! The only society we've ever seen do this before, (throughout modern history), not even bother to protest against their own government's criminal murder and killing of innocent people (once the people found out), was indeed, Nazi Germany 1933-1945, and that's the only time in modern history the people of any society have done what these American people are today. This is just another truth that seems to be forgotten today, but what was the most asked question after WW2, a question asked all the way into the early 1980s? "Why did the German people do nothing"? What's worse, is, we can understand today, why the German people did what they did, they were starving to death with the harshness of the Versailles treaty, and dying in large numbers during the great depression, so quite naturally, they'd of supported absolutely anything that offered them hope! These Americans have no such excuse. This is the biggest problem facing us all today, these incredibly uneducated people themselves, don't know or even understand right from wrong any more! They clearly, and without any doubt, have no morals, and as for any kind of understanding of ethics?, they'd all need to look up what ethics are! Truth will always, and must always come out, and that truth today, is, it's these American people themselves, who are all at fault and responsible for all of this today, because it's up to them to stand up and demand their government stops all of this! This film gave a rosy view of Horseracing in America. Whilst at the elite level horses stay with the same trainers and owners throughout their careers. However 90% of America horses run in claiming races and as such are viewed little more than a commodity. Anyone can claim them and if you look at their form they can have as many as five or six owners and trainers in a twelve month period

This was a lovely movie about an incredible animal and athlete told from the perspective of owners who love and care for their animals. That said, the horse industry as a whole, with the racing industry being at the top of it, is a reprehensible industry filled with people who care far more about the money than the animal. Note that it was said in the course of the film that those horses "who are the best" get exceptional care. The problem is, very few make it to the top and many die in terrible circumstances. The reason the sport is dying is all the bad publicity it rightfully gets from the deaths on the track, the general public is aware something is wrong. The sport does not deserve to be revived unless it is cleaned up.

It's not just the dopping of horse's to force them to run in pain and injuries- but what happens to those who don't make it to the winners circle...the leftover s don't always get a good ending..they often end up being used in illegal backroads races and injured &left to suffer & die ..I have seen several TBs ,apindix and quarter horse's in deplorable conditions from track &backroads racing ... I commend the TRULY GOOD OWNERS who do the right things by horse's... But the bad one's are what hurt the industry in a nut shell.. So it's not about the lossed love for the horse just crappie owner's and trainers willing to destroy a gorgeous animal for the $$$ and trophy and fame that has hurt the racing industry.... But in a nut shell - thank you Mr pecie for sharing this movie and shing a light on the few owner's, trainers who really care about their horse's...It was nice to see ...

Comparing these horses to adult human athletes and commenting that the horses have to be "babied" is a really strange thing to say for a professional in the horse field. These horses ARE babies. If love of and respect for the horse is the real motivation here, I think it will be best to have horse racing begin after the horses are actually fully grown. It just so happened I watched a documentary on Ruffian after this, and I can't get her out of my heart. If she'd just been allowed to grow up first, and raced after her bones were fully grown, I think the world would have been better.

Back in the day, all Baze kids broke the horses before riding races. Russell, Gary, Mike, Jeff, Dale, and Toni Baze. I broke horses and trained with my dad. I wanted to ride, but I took the trainers test at 16. My father, who was a rider with Joe, told me he couldn’t handle me going down in a race, but galloping and schooling out of the gate was ok?! 😳

When they reach the end of their careers, they are sold as show horses, pleasure horses, police horses, barrel racing horses, etc etc etc. Anything an ordinary horse can do, a Thoroughbred can do better. Some go to stud, or broodmare duties. It is illegal to put them in the slaughter pipeline. The industry and activists are always trying to find the ones that slip thru the cracks. At auctions and on transports. The federal government is supposed to have inspectors checking for tattoos and chips. Do not assume these horses are just put on a truck for slaughter. The industry is proactive in the ongoing welfare of these horses. It didn't used to be that way. Not when I started in the industry. Race today, be at the knackers the next. That was heartbreaking, for sure.

@@loribaker8339 You are undoubtably correct in saying that "Secretariat" had an abnormally large heart, yet I believe that what made him so outstanding was the size of his heart and musculature combined with an innate will, even determination to win. Without the latter no horse will be a true champion. It is also something that cannot be ascertained until the horse actually starts to run.. Worth also mentioning that in the 49 years since "SECRETARIAT" won the American Triple Crown, no other horse has even equalled, let alone beaten "Big Red's", winning times in each of the three legs(races)..!!

I just wish they wouldn’t use painkillers of any kind in these creatures. They use exotic painkillers like frog poison you name it; which blood test can not detect. And when detected; which takes a lot of investigation they bring another exotic painkiller into the game. It is just horrible. You force the horse to its limits and the horse keep forcing its thin legs not feeling pain at all and just run and usually breaks both front legs. It is horrid to watch that.

I grew up in the 50's and 60's - going to a local small track with my Dad. He believed it was crooked and there was certainly evidence of that. That's why I don't follow it anymore. Races ARE fixed.

The sport is meandering if not dying. Sure, 100k people on KY Derby Day at Churchill, but go back any other day of week and you’re at a few thousand people. The vig in the sport is just way too high. You can’t drop 20% of WPS bets and up to 30% of Exotics and expect to maintain a healthy bettor ecosystem. Imagine if Vegas tried dropping 20%-30% of its betting handle, it’d be dead within a decade.
