Francis and Kaiora Tipene discuss their journey from funeral directors to international television stars on their groundbreaking series ‘The Casketeers’
When Francis and Kaiora Tipene agreed to take part in a new television series centred entirely around them and their Auckland based funeral business, they could never have imagined the impact they would have - firstly throughout New Zealand and now thanks to Netflix, around the world. The hit series ‘The Casketeers’ has helped to break down taboos and reshape people’s ideas around death.
This is their story - Francis and Kaiora Tipene - Indigenous 100.

Gosh I so love Kaiora and Francis esp the work and passion that they have towards the grieving family or families.. I'm such a huge fan of theirs ever since I've watched the first episode of The Casketeers. I'm not Maori, however I do have respect for their love of their culture and their willingness to incorporate that into their work, is so beautiful. Keep that Passion that the both of you have along with your staff in doing the work that you all do.. PS I look forward to watching the next upcoming episode. No.1 Fan of these two and Fiona.. Awesome..

I've just tripped onto your "Casketeers" thought it was going to be a bit like the Musketeers but ho ho hum how far from the truth was I. Love this interview, know little Maori of Maori descent but just love the way you two portrait yourselves on this program. And your voice eho so uuummm soft so encouraging I think you would have done well at what ever you chose in this life. Thank you for sharing. Oh ya you 2 will have to open something up down here in the Waikato.

In the beginning I felt Funeral Homes and associated issues was not suitable for TV viewing, almost a taboo subject, that just got dealt with. Having said that, this programme is one of my favourite 'must viewings'. I love the personalities, the warmth, and the family aspect. I particularly enjoyed the most recent programme, I'm sorry I can't remember any names, but Nanas Dog and the little mokopuna. So beautifully done, and Francis' singing, beautiful Thank you

I love this couple SO much, Francis is so much like me, practical with my job, a deep respect for those whove passed and compassion for thier bodies and life event that brought them there, but also with weaknesses for nice things and PIES. Life is good VERY good, with the right pie! But I will never forget the first corpse I ever saw and saw the love that had been poured into her in her last days and felt nothing but deep co passion for the trauma that her life had been. He body gave away a lot to thise who knew what they were seeing. You guys have my deepest admiration.

Love this sooooooo much, as you guys call us the Urban Maori that’s Awesome. I have learnt a lot with listening and watching the film Casketers , have lost my mum (nanny) a year ago at the age of 94yrs, I saw a lot of things that were done incorrectly during our tangihanga here in Oz, and its really sad, still to this day I feel for my mum, but I know she would not have worried about it at all as she was not someone who talked a lot about the tapu side of things, to a certain extent. Thank you so much Tipene funerals for sharing your knowledge, and making us all learn mote about the processes of a funeral.
