What's sad is that maybe most of us always felt unwanted in tribes and other cultures. Due to genocide a lot of Indian children were orphaned and raped and maybe they survived and have kids today who want to learn the culture from eher we come from. Us bottom bricks are just as important as holding you higher bricks up who had the luxury of family members surviving to tell you where you are from, we didn't.

Hi Mallory - I've been doing genealogy for over a decade now and have always known that we had Native Blood. Both of my parents told us about the fact that we were Native and French but couldn't tell us more. For years it was treated as the family's dirty secret. This was upsetting to me and I always self-identified as Metis. Although I have yet to find the Native tie in my mother's family, I have successfully found it on my father's side and there is a lot there. Both of my father's parents have Native ties. Slowly I'm learning more about Native Culture and Practices. I've taken a Course on Native Studies to better understand the 'true' story' of the Natives in North America and not the version I was taught in history. I know that at least part of our family comes from the Huron-Wendat and along with other family members we are learning more about them. Thank you for the videos you have, they have helped me in my journey!

My grandfather told me his grandfather was a Indigenous Medicine man. I think he said Lumbee but their name was Mingo, Mingwe. They were extremely tall and so was my grandfather. I'm black and because of slavery and colonization it's difficult to trace my ancestry. I couldn't talk to the elders too much because they tucked the pain, fear, and embarrassment away. What I know is Europeans renamed his people and refused to acknowledge the accurate pronunciation. I know features and certain conditions that effects the Indigenous community effects my family. Because of what has happened in the past I'm reluctant to do the DNA test.

I did not become aware of the possibility of indigenous Americans in my family tree until very recently, but I had always admired them so when I found family lines pointing to them, it made me very happy. For now we will say that I am cautiously optimistic. According to Family Search, I'm descended from the Patawomeck and the Montauk through my paternal grandma (via Keziah Arroyah and "Chippewa" Janet Glen respectively) and from the Abenaki or Wampanoag through my maternal grandpa (via Ruhamah Jones). I don't look the part at all, so I was initially a little scared to talk about it in public but since I sense an invitation to share and the welcome I have received in other spaces has been a very pleasant surprise, here I am. Here's hoping I can learn a little more. 😊

I have been told all my life that both my grandfathers were Cherokee. Although the looks and features of both of them are undeniably Native, a record search comes to a dead stop in 1810, Lebanon Tn. But through my searches and talking with relatives I found a connection with a distance Cuz, we had the same 3rd great grandmother. Our 2nd great grandmothers were sisters. We found further connections. He already had found our 3rd great grandmother was connected to The Meherrin of North Carolina, a band of the Tuscarora, Six Nation’s.

I found out 3 years ago what I had always felt in my spirit that I was part indigenous. When my father passed away. At his funeral, I happen to mention to my dad's sister that I swore if we went back far enough in time, there would be indigenous in our bloodline. My aunt turned and looked at me saying " well we are". She told me that my father's mother's mother (my great grandmother) was half indigenous. I then spoke to my uncle. My father's brother and he told me that their father was also part indigenous. This side of the family are French from Quebec. I tried to do a bit of research and found that there were a few bands that I very well may have in my bloodline. I also know the spelling of my father's last name, Leclerc had the spelling changed in the 1800s which was around the time my Indigenous ancestors would have scattered and landed in Quebec. I hope I can do some more digging and find out what band or bands my family have in there bloodline. I have felt a strong connection to Mohawk but also have felt for a very long time a spiritual connection to inuit. Just as I had confirmation of my spiritual knowing that I was indigenous, I hope to be able to have the same confirmation of what band I belong to. I thank the Creator for helping me to finally be able to connect with my people. The family I have been longing for as I have never felt a belonging to my mother's side which is Scottish and Austrian. I may look white on the outside but my spirit says I am a strong indigenous woman who was born to bring peace back to our people. All that was stolen from us and the evil and sick abuse justified by those who claimed to be loving followers of God. Our Creator has exposed the lies and given us closure for all the sweet children who were degraded, neglected, rejected and sadly killed all for the need to manipulate and control what the white man didn't understand and feared. Our people have always known Creator and lived in peace, helping one another and giving with our whole hearts to whoever we came across. We have never been the ones to start a fight, only stood up and fought back to protect ourselves when attacked. Well my brothers and sisters, believe me when I tell you, God is still continuing to work behind the scenes to restore all the damage the evil one has caused. We will see our people rise again. All belongs to Creator and He is going to give us authority to take back the land in many places because He knows our hearts are for the love of people, and all living things. So let us continue to heal and let go of all bitterness toward our oppressors and put our energy and focus into praying and speaking and writing down our vision of what we want to see our nation become. Once again we will flourish!! We are God's children and He is making it right again!! My name is Amy and I am a warrior for Creator!!

My great grandmother told me her grandmother (whom she knew, personally) was a Native of the Blackfeet tribe. I’ve been searching, but cannot find a written confirmation. However, her father would go up from the US to Canada to farm per census records, which seems strange considering the homesteading and farming in the area where the other family stayed.

I was a tribal citizen of a federally recognized tribe for years until we got gaming. Our family is allotted land, and my great grandmother, her siblings, and my great great grandmother were on the first census records from the 1800s of our reservation. But while our tribe did not claim we aren't Native Americans, they declared that my ancestors are not from our tribe so my clan, my extended family of about 100 adults and all of our families, were written out of history. We were kicked out, disenrolled from our tribe in 2006. I have taken a DNA test that shows that my family is from the region of our tribe, but the contention was what village my family was from in the historical period, so the test just shows that we are related to our tribe, which they don’t deny as there are six other local bands of the same people. I didn’t grow up on the reservation nor was I officially part of the tribe until I was an adult but really joining ended up causing a lot of heartache. Sadly, I got into learning our culture as I was in the language class for over three years but after we were disenrolled I wasn’t allowed to go to the class anymore and over the years I forgot a lot of what I learned. By the way, every adult in the tribe got a 12% raise in their per capita share as my clan was 12% of the tribe.

My grandmother pass down that we Cherokee and Blackfeet Indians, then I read medical article on DNA it says that the majority of all Native Americans blood type are O group. I did my blood type and it’s O group, that proves I am Cherokee/Native American. I looked the book titled, The Black American Handbook for Survival through the 21st Century. Volume 1: The Forgotten Truth Behind Racism in America. The book has a lists of surnames for these tribes. Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Muskogee, a.k.a. Creek, and Seminole. My surname is listed under Cherokee which is additional proof that I am Cherokee. Furthermore, The Smithsonian Institute, Bureau of Ethnology, Nineteenth Annual Report, 1898 states “a considerable portion of the blood of the southern Negro is unquestionably Indian.” My state birth record under race type says Negro which means again that I am an American Indian. I’m my opinion, what Blacks need do is created a Declaration of Ancestry to bullet point and document proof of their ancestry and publish it in the public record.

I have a tribal citizenship roll from 1896 which belongs to my 2nd great grandmother and designates her as "Choctaw tribal citizen by blood living in the district designated for Chickasaw tribal citizens of the Choctaw Nation." So there's both a designation of race/ethnicity by blood (Chickasaw) and a designation of tribal citizenship (Choctaw.) Her husband was a white Quaker of Western European & mostly Northern European descent (Scandinavian, Finnish, German, British /French.) So their children were born in the Nation to a mother of tribal citizenship but were genetically half Northern European admixed. One generation down, my grandmother is 75% European admixed and also born in the Nation. But that's my heritage. POC can be 50-75% White admixed and still have the experience of particularly being that type of POC. I.e. only being 25% American Indian by blood but growing up on a rez and having to leave and adapt to the mainstream America.

After he died I had to fill out a whole lot of paperwork so his widow could access a stipend from the tribal federation. I'd like to connect with that heritage but I feel afraid of stepping into that space. I'm not interested in playing pretend like I've lived that life and know those struggles. I just want to know my roots. Feel that connection. Learn. Mostly I read books by indigenous authors as my way of reaching out and learning. I've thought about traveling to the local tribal center but I don't want to just be a tourist. Does anyone have any suggestions?

My great grandmother was part of Iroquois bloodline but then she lost her children to the welfair state and then my mother and then myself a long history of children becoming lost to the state has made finding out who my family is and connecting to them. How can't I trace that back and find my tribe when we have been to broken by the child welfair system?

I don't know much about my mom's side of the family and I have been trying to find this out myself. Several people always ask if I am of indigenous blood based on some of my pictures but I don’t know. Lol however one day I decided to listen to a native chant on here, I was going through something at the time and I was crying heavily but it wasn't forced..like the tears just came...I said okay the ancestors are talking to me. But I really need to find out lol

I'm 41% Native American according to the DNA test I took from Ancestry . They offered to help with what tribe of people I come from for$ 3,000 dollars . I don't have that kind of money . Knowing from them by my chart my people are from Mexico and southern Texas . Which is the Apache or the Comanche . I'm 65 years old and I would like to find out ways I could find this out . I live in Idaho so I really don't think research here would help me . Since I think records would be in Texas . Please can somebody help me with this task before I die.

This is what I know I definitely know on my dad's side cuz of my Puerto Rican descent I have Taino I know mom's side it was always told that my great-grandmother and great-grandfather has a native bloodline from the First Nation I'm trying to trace it but I can't find the connection they never wanted to talk so we don't know what their tribal names were I only have the names that were given to them at the residential school and they never talked about who their parents were and I can't ask them cuz they've done passed away I just wish I could trace it I would love to connect with that part of me
@MalloryRoseCo
@MalloryRoseCo 3 жыл бұрын
That sounds really tough Lisa, I am sure they didn't want to talk because it was a painful part of their life, residential schools gave many Indigenous people trauma that is very hard for them to speak about. I hope you keep trying to find your culture and where they came from - that is the most healing thing you could do for them.

I had always wondered if there was AmerIndian in my family tree. My dad was adopted & raised as an American British, Irish, & German White - & could pass for White, except I thought his eyes were a bit Asian or perhaps AmerIndian; & he & I both could tan quickly & well if/when sufficiently exposed (he preferred working graveyard shifts so he rarely got much sunlight - & he had surgery on his eyes to improve his peripheral vision for police work); however, my mom who was of White, or mostly White ancestry insisted that my dad looked German (period). Both of my now late parents refused to DNA test as did my now late maternal aunt & my sister; so, after my parents passed away I started taking DNA tests. The first 3 companies that I tried were AncestryDNA, MyHeritageDNA, & FamilyTreeDNA. And I also tried one other company. While I'm still awaiting the results of FamilyTreeDNA's complete mtDNA & Big Y-DNA tests, their recent ancestry results for me already arrived, & none of these first 3 companies' recent ancestry reports pointed to either Asian or AmerIndian ancestry, so I figured I had been wrong about my dad's eyes (they all found beau-coup European area results, as expected); however, the fourth company I tried, CRI Genetics did both a Recent Ancestry Analysis & an Advanced Ancestry Analysis of my DNA & they found various Asian, AmerIndian, & African in my distant past & Southern Asian in my more recent past as well (so, me & my mom were both a bit right: dad was German + much more, unless these other ethnicities were coming from my rather pale-skinned mom, which I doubt, but can't know for sure). As far as "3.5% AdMix American" ancient results go, the ethnicities/countries & tribes/peoples listed by CRI Genetics for ancient ancestry are: 1.2% COLUMBIAN, incl: VENEZUELA, PANAMA & ECUADOR... • MESTIZO • WAYUU • PÁEZ • PASTO • EMBERÁ • ZENÚ [18 generations back: 95% accurate] [15 generations back: 90% accurate] [11 generations back: 95% accurate] 1% PERUVIAN, incl: ECUADOR (again), BOLIVIA, ARGENTINA & CHILE... • MESTIZO (again) • QUECHUA • AYMARA • INCA 0.8% PUERTO RICAN... • TAINO [12 generations back: 95% accurate] [10 generations back: 99% accurate] 0.5% MEXICAN, incl: GUATEMALA... • MESTIZO (yet again) • NAHUA • AZTEC • MAYA • ZAPOTEC • MIXTEC • OTOMI • TOTONAC • KAQCHIKEL • MAM 1.9% ancient East Asian results are: 0.9% CHINESE DAI, incl: CHINA, TAIWAN, THAILAND, LAOS, MALAYSIA & SINGAPORE... • AKHA • YI [73 generations back: 99% accurate] [21 generations back: 95% accurate] 0.6% SOUTHERN HAN CHINESE, incl: CHINA (again), XINJIANG, TAIWAN (again), SINGAPORE (again), MALAYSIA (again), HONG KONG, MACAU, THAILAND (again), LAOS (again) & CAMBODIA... • KHMER • TIBET 0.4% JAPANESE, incl: JAPAN, KOREA, TAIWAN (yet again), RUSSIA, INDONESIA & PAPUA NEW GUINEA [11 generations back: 95% accurate] 4.3% ancient South Asian results are: GUJARATI INDIAN (of INDIA) [19 generations back: 80% accurate] [12 generations back: 95% accurate] BENGALI, incl: BANGLADESH, INDIA (again), PAKISTAN, SAUDI ARABIA, UNITED ARAB EMIRATES, QATAR, KUWAIT & BAHRAIN PUNJABI, incl: PAKISTAN (again) & INDIA (yet again) [13 generations back: 80% accurate] TAMIL,* incl: SRI LANKA,* INDIA (again still), MALAYSIA (yet again) & SINGAPORE (yet again) * = In Recent Ancestry I have 5.8% SRI LANKAN TAMIL. And also in my ancient ancestry results I have 0.1% LUHYA of KENYA, incl: KENYA, TANZANIA, UGANDA & SUDAN. All other (90%) Ancient results & (94.2%) Recent results are EUROPEAN, incl: Northern, NW, BRITISH ISLES, & SPAIN/IBERIA** (consisting of many countries I won't list here now to save space). O.2% of my Ancient Ethnicities were undetermined (also, in some cases CRI Gentics determined how many generations back an ethnicity entered into my tree on the ancient results & gave their statistically determined accuracy of the result which I've placed in [brackets]). ** = FamilyTreeDNA also listed Spain while AncestryDNA had listed North Africa (incl: Canary Islands) instead, & MyHeritage mentioned Greek & Southern Italian instead. Note: North Africa, Greece, Italy & Spain all have hundreds of years of shared history in trading, invasions, & territorial occupations (so each of their different guesstimations made sense). Percentage guesstimates also varied between companies & company updates (but such is the least important thing among the results).

My mother, grandmother, and great grandmother and all the women before them all belong to the eastern band of Cherokee Indians I have always felt disconnected from that because of the trauma and the tribal law that stated I could not enroll in the tribe because I had less than a 1/16th blood quantum but I have heard they recently just changed the tribal law to now include those of us who have a low blood quantum level but can easily trace an ancestor back to the 1924 baker roll which my great great grandmother is on so I believe in the next few months I can enroll with the tribe and become more connected to the elders and community members in our tribe

When I was researching I found the death record of my maternal 4th great grandmother who was born in 1833 in Nova Scotia which I found out from her death records had her race listed as “squaw” which I had to google. I ended up hitting a brick wall after and I don’t know if she was full blooded or her band and I can’t find records of her parents outside of her death record so I don’t know their birth or death years. I can’t even find her in the Canadian censuses that were taken during the time she was alive or her daughter in the Canadian censuses while she still lived in Canada I was able to find a lot of records of her daughter (her daughter’s marriages is how I found out her name) but all those records are United States records most of which Massachusetts records. But if she was full blooded if I took a dna test I might have a Native American maternal haplogroup because of the fact that somehow every one of my direct ancestors from her to me are female (she gave birth to a girl who gave birth to a girl who gave birth to a girl etc… until we get to me and I’m also female) unless I’m wrong about how the haplogroups work or if I made a mistake in my tree or she wasn’t full blooded. Sorry for the paragraph but it’s frustrating and it’s her and my Irish ancestors that are giving me trouble.

Hi Mallory! My indigenous lineage is complicated, to say the least. It's from my Dad's side, and we've always known there is a Huron/ Wendat connection, but many generations back. However, a few years ago, a cousin of mine began to research and found a Cree connection. My great grandfather was a trapper for the HBC and apparently had a Cree partner. He was a married man, but had a relationship with a " Swampy Cree" woman, who was supposedly from Alberta, originally. They were in northern Ontario. Was she a willing participant in this? Who knows. They had several children together, one of which was my paternal grandmother. Her name was either "Jospheine" or "Josette", and the trail goes cold there. Certainly not the name her mother gave her. How did she get from Alberta to Ontario? Was she stolen and forced into human trafficing? There are no birth records, death records, ect. They werr never married, as he already had a wife and children. I've always wanted to pursue this further, but have literally run up against a wall. Thanks so much, for this video. Brightest Blessings, to you and yours ✨ Stay Safe. Much Love, from Ontario, Canada 🇨🇦... Keli 💖
