That's a legit well-known and extremely expensive oriental herb in Chinese culture. it's called 冬蟲夏草 "Dong Chong Sha Chao" (Worms of winter, herbs of summer) Look it up. You can still buy it nowadays. It costs 50-100 dollars per gram.

addition: granny keeps talking about making Maomao a courtesan, but for granny that is her showing love because in granny's world being a high ranking courtesan gives the woman the most freedom and authority over her own life take the three princesses for example, the charge exorbitant fees and rarely lay with the customer the fees are for tea ceremony or poetry recital or dancing or music playing/singing, so for granny its the best life she can give Maomao

Speaking from an Anime only perspective and having kept up with the most recent episodes; I cannot wait to see Alicia's reaction to the next story beat. If you thought things were wild this season, wait till the next couple of episodes because we about to delve deep into backstory.

So there's not all that much that I can expand on whilst keeping within the no spoiler rules this episode. (Hurray!) Also happy that Alicia picked up on why Maomao didn't say that she wanted to stay, some miss that part. In the Novels this is also where she reflects on all that's happened and I was happy the anime kept that reflection, though some viewers were confused. So as is tradition, for those curious: It isn't as obvious in the anime, as to why Maomao periodically examines that little finger, but it is actually slightly deformed, and the reason for it is somewhat tied to her personality, and how it was shaped. The details of which will become more clear in the near future as the anime progresses. Also that fungus is similar to the zombie fungus that hits ants, and it's cousin that targets spiders. This is a parasitic fungus that targets caterpillars and is used as a rare medicinal ingredient.

3:07 (Keeping it spoiler-free and as vague as possible): In the manga, Maomao unpacks some of the hows and whys she relates to people the way she does. It is pretty interesting and makes a lot of sense when you think about her nature and upbringing. Also speaking of the manga (still as vaguely as possible), I can barely wait for Alicia to reach the frog shenanigans. Absolutely delightful little sequence, but we will have to wait for the next season I guess.

Characters like Maomao does deemed romance to be unnecessary. Yeah she can love but for it to be romantic Jinshi has to work extra hard while also be patient

At this point I think she has already fallen for him and just hasn't realized it yet. She hasn't experienced love before and has no idea what it's like so even when she does fall for someone, she most likely won't know. You can see it in this episode. At the start of the series if Jinshi did that finger kiss she would throw up or think it was gross, but you can see her turn away and blush in this episode. She obviously loves him already, I just don't think she realizes it yet.

SPOILERS About their relationship: They already banged a couple times, and Maomao seems to be a beast in bed, even tho she doesnt seem that into sex. She has A LOT of talent. They are a couple now, dating and pretty much married, but their dynamic stays kinda the same, they just have some more intimate and cute moments together.

Not much to say about this one, but the animation of Maomao running is really nice, and I like the callback to Lihaku’s reaction to seeing Maomao in her normal clothes and freckles. Also, Joka joins the list of girls and women who’ve gotten adorably cuddly with Maomao. :3 (Pairin in episode 1, Meimei in the bath, the Jade Pavilion girls trying to stay warm at the garden party.)😊

And now the power dynamic shifts pretty dramatically. Remember, Maomao only really obeyed Jinshi because he's effectively the overseer of the rear palace, and the only ones with enough political power to stand on his level are the top concubines like Gyoukuyou. Since Maomao was Gyoukuyou's lady-in-waiting, Maomao had excuses to avoid Jinshi when possible, even if she had to listen to direct requests. However, this isn't the case anymore. Jinshi is now directly responsible for Maomao, meaning she's basically trapped with him.

​@@evantheilman2751 each of the 3 princesses costs a years salery for a soldier to lend out not buy out. that's a vast difference. later on in a later episode this is actually calculated by mamao about the exact cost. Lihaku got a promotion and ended up with a yearly salery about 1000 silver. the cost of the princess is at least 10000 so... it would take 10 years for him but again pay changes based on position.

if i'm to guess maomao would probabaly be at most a quarter of the price of the major princesses due to her young age but no particular talents when it came to entertaining their guest with traditional ways. as mentioned in a later comment Maomao calculates exactly how much one of the 3 princesses would cost and it's 10 years worth of salery for Lihaku (who got a promotion tnx to maomao helping him rise through the ranks due to her detective work). the price she calculated was 10k silver with Lihakus new job being 1k yearly salery. for jinshi even that 2.5k that maomao could cost at most would probably be chump change

@@LIAuNXeNON If I remember right, the cost to buy out is also based on how much can be expected to be earned before one leaves/ is let go/ debt is paid off and given how young Maomao is(17-18 at this point I think) that could have raised the price up, plus Jinshi really wants her back so it could very well be close to what one of the 3 princesses would go for. I don't know about you but that chest looked to be glowing like gold and so far all talks of payment and buying have been in silver. Could it have been artistic flare? Yep, but it would be funny if he just dumped gold on the old lady too.

@@zeroraptor it was absolutely an artistic flare because nothing was ever mentioned being payed in gold by the higher ups but by silver. That would also coincide with the base setting of the series(that being old-ish china) in which silver was the predominant currency

Technically he didn't buy out her loans. He literally bought Maomao, contractually. Don't underestimate how much she owed, she was literally destined to be there forever if he didn't. Basically if Jinshi wanted to, she could be his Concubine if he so chooses. He kind of owns her now. If you didn't notice in the show hardly any women are lets say Free Women.

This episode was great, such a great end to the season and first half of the show's course. Was so frustrated with Maomao's plan to try and stay in the rear palace but not actually vocalizing those thoughts. The party scene made up for that though, seeing everyone around the two goofs watching and giggling at them was precious.
