Playing extremely low tunings puts a special emphasis on how to deal with either super thick or super floppy strings and also achieving clarity with notes that shouldn't be playable with these instruments. Joining Indistinct last year has really put my playing and musicianship to test with both memorizing long non-repeating patterns and getting the tone needed.
In this song I play my Dingwall D-Roc Standard 5 tuned to low D#0 (an octave lower than standard 4-string bass) using the Dingwall Nickel 45-130 strings. The tone is done through Neural DSP Parallax with a custom patch and some additional EQing.

A 130??? Crazy. I use Payson "drop A" sets with a 145 for F0 and even that is pushing it a bit. Sounds great, though!

Hahah it's a bit nuts but I don't mind! I've been too lazy to file the nut for thicker strings, I'll get there at some point though! I've been thinking about something along the lines of 155-165.

A 130 is indeed crazy ... I use a 170 for F0 on my fourstring Dingwall and even that feels a bit floppy

Question. How do you make sure your strings are in tune when tuned that low? My tuners have a difficult time picking up such low notes. Especially on the thickest string

All the other strings are pretty easy, but the lowest string is a bit of a hassle. Sometimes I tune it by the 12th fret harmonic and leave it a bit flat since my strings are so loose it raises a bit in pitch when I hit it. Sometimes I fine tune that by playing octaves between the lowest string and a higher string and letting them ring and seeing if there's any wavering in pitch. Live I can feel that the string action doesn't feel right and that's a good indication that the lowest string has gone down in pitch since I tuned it.
