The chant in the beginning of the track is called Kecak, a Balinese form of dance and music drama also known as Ramayana Monkey Chant, or simply "monkey dance." It is a tradition dating back ages. Traditionally, at least 150 shirtless men sit in a circle wearing checked cloths. They melodically chant while moving their hands and arms. What they are doing is depicting a battle scene from the Ramayana, a Sanskrit epic considered one of Bharat's great works of literature along with the Mahabharata. The story says that the monkey-like Vanara helped Prince Rama fight the evil King Ravana in Sri Lanka by building rama setu. The bridge exists even today.

Mostly right but this form of drama does not date back ages, actually. Not even a century.

I remember the first time I saw this was as kid(9-11 yrs old) on PBS when flipping through channels, and the only thing that made me stop from changing the channel was that the main guy chanting looks exactly like my dad. I thought they were related, and I could never get over this and would repeatedly chant like this to my dad thinking he would understand me. He didn't, he just thought I was crazy and needed brother's and sister's.

@@yehli I left this comment a while ago. I'm not an expert on this case study. We just covered it in one of my anthropology classes. I doubt you will be able to find such specific answers. I feel both blessed and fortunate to have been able to witness this when I visited Bali many years ago. As a Filipino, I felt an immediate affinity and appreciation for the island, its people, and its culture. For me, Bali was more than just the postcard-perfect paradise it was always painted to be, it was a living example and historic theater which presented a way of life that once was and could have been... Bali touched me, but it also taught me a lesson of hope and perseverance through its very own tale of how it became a promise and the answer to a people’s unwavering faith and resilience, and how it would serve as their earthly sanctuary and ultimate refuge. A final bastion that would not only permit them to hold steadfast, but to also preserve and further foster their ancient customs and religion amidst the arrival and spread of another (much larger and monotheistic belief from West) that would one day sweep across and dominate their entire archipelago. A similar fate and course which my country and neighboring archipelago would also follow… More than just a theatrical display (which expresses their people’s unique and syncretic interpretation of the Ramayana epic) the ‘Kecak’, or Monkey Dance as it is popularly known, is a performance of the soul. It is a spectacle of spirit and a cultural gem which exists nowhere else, and which everybody should endeavor to see once in their lifetime. But more importantly and more meaningfully, it is a precious performance which not only displays, but beautifully captures and conveys the raw power and unbounded energy of the human spirit, which in its collective form is truly an indomitable force capable of anything -- even moving mountains.

I'd love to join and experience their collective trance ritual! It's so powerful, even by watching it on video I get to feel and sense a part of it!

Oh, I saw that it's a funeral rite.. I'm sorry to learn and hear that, so i take back me previous comment, I'd love to joint some similar ritual of them like this, which doesn't involve the death of one of their tribe members... I'm just so blown away by it, I really miss communal ceremony and ritual, music and dance, spirit worship and communication in my own culture, the old ways got lost, yet survived and took on different forms here in Europe(the Netherlands) Witches like me where burned at the stake for a long long time, in many parts of the world indigenous and tribal people, medicine people, animists, healers, herbalists, shamans, chiefs, sorcerers, pagans etc. etc. etc. used to be wiped out and forced into submission to bow for the new religions of masculine dominion and superiority... But we are the sons and daughters of all those witches they weren't able to burn! The old Spirits and Deities never really left, they just changed their way of appearance to secure their existence, to fit into the new religion in a way and appearance making their origin acceptable, even though attempts kept on being made to make people forget true history.. The ancient libraries of knowledge got burned, but many great and important scriptures survived, got spread and passed on underground, went into secrecy for as long as needed, and have survived till this very days! Do your research people, study real history, esoteric knowledge, the original scriptures from long time ago, knowledge is power! We live in a world full of occult! We are very psychic and magical creatures, programmed to refuse to realize it, brainwashed into believing we're not good enough, don't deserve, for we are sinful creatures, and all we can do is repent and convert, and hope some day we'll be saved while there's no reason why we couldn't do so ourselves, except for the fact we're still not doing and completely realizing it yet... Jesus was the first witch to be murdered at the stake/cross...

The very first part of the video shows Angkor temples in Cambodia. But after a minute or less the rest is Indonesia.
