In 1960's indonesian military ranked as the 5th strongest military in the world and indonesia hold the position in the top 10 strongest country untill indonesia trapped in massive debt to european countries in the late 80's. European countries then using this momentum to forcing indonesia demilitarizing it's military until gradualy indonesia become very weak. Indonesia then smashed by american military embargo in 2000 due to east timor conflict and fall to be one of the weakest country in the world. But, gradualy after gaining russian patronage, indonesian military began to improved until in 2017 if i'm not mistaking, indonesia climbing the rank to be 15th strongest country in the world. Now indonesian government began to rearming the military and in few decades, indonesia will take back it's seat among top 10 strongest country in the world As the 5th stongest country in 1960's and holding the seat among 10 strongest country in the world until 1980's, indonesia become a serious threat to western power due to it's strong anti western mentality. Indonesian diplomats often clashing debate with western diplomats in the UN meeting, in which indonesian diplomats often attacking western diplomats related to modern slavery, neo-colonialism and neo-imperialism practices by western countries. This why western countries using debt trap to weaken indonesian military to weaken indonesian position in the international world

If you also look at geographical position and world's political situation, and if you do learn history, even if there is no netherland, indonesia will still spend alot of money on deffence... again... you will understand if you do learn the history No, it's not the same as north korea. North korea build their military backed by paranoia, while indonesia building the military because of tension and conflict with netherland and the brits So you better spend some time to learn the history
