Indonesians unhappy over President Jokowi’s attempt to create political dynasty: Analyst

Even after Indonesia's legislature said it will not ratify changes to election rules during the current government's term, demonstrations flared outside parliament. Security forces used tear gas and water cannons to disperse protesters. One of the reasons why many Indonesians are unhappy with the current situation is that they believe outgoing Indonesian President Joko Widodo is trying to insert his son into the political process in a bid to create a political dynasty, Professor of Asian Studies at University of Tasmania James Chin tells CNA’s Asia Now.

Thailand, Philippines, Cambodia and now Indonesia all moving toward a political dynasty. It’s going to be very difficult to reach real progress for Southeast Asia as political dynasties are most of the times opportunistic, incompetent and corrupt. Also they’re prone to being manipulated by foreign powers particularly by the US and China. I kinda always hoped that Southeast Asia would be neutral to maintain stability in the world but unfortunately thanks to these political dynasties, ASEAN countries are nothing but pawns for the competing superpowers.

I'm one of many who believe that the recent presidential election's result was rigged in favor of Prabowo and Gibran. There was a strong rumor that 30% of Ganjar's votes were redirected to the Prabowo-Gibran camp by the order of Jokowi. Their victory doesn't make sense. For example, in the district where I live, Ganjar won by a significant margin in the polling stations in my area. Yet, when the final result was announced, he was at the bottom of the tally! The fact that Ganjar and Mahfud MD lose out at Madura Island also doesn't make sense. Normally Madurese would be keen to see one of their men holding the top job. But the fact that they scored worst result in there doesn't make sense.

The law was discussed in parliement and people expecting the president to say something and show stand to make sure the constitutional court decision is fully followed..yet he choose to let it processed internally by parliement, something that not people want...and considered of lack of understanding on the matter. Jokowi is a good leader, but like many good leader they still need to be reminded when going stray, thank god for democracy...Indonesian people has channel to do it, comeback stronger Indonesia!
