This comment is 15 years later in 2023. Agree with everyone who says this honor was long overdue. But as one of the witnesses of these years I ask you to reflect for a minute. Maybe it is perfect timing? The DC 5 was and is great Rock and Roll. Always will be. It could not have been honored in the 70's. It was too soon. The 80's was another revolution like the 60's. It was happening so fast and so loud we did not have any moment to reflect. We were having to much fun. The 90's would have been the first time to really look back and do it. But with the emergence of Rap music, it was considered inappropriate to look at it then. 2007 was really the first time when there was a slight lull in the action to say.....Hey. Want about the Dave Clark 5. YEAH! We miss that music. It was so great!!

I was blessed to get to see Mike Smith perform at the MoonDog Coronation Ball in Cleveland, Ohio, just 6 months before his tragic fall that left him a tetraplegic....and unable to perform again...he was fantastic and still took my breath away. I absolutely LOVED the DC 5, but even more, I ADORED MIKE SMITH!! Just watching him standing there spread legged pounding out that beat and growling those fantastic lyrics with that killer smile made this pre teen lose her adolescent blues and feel a flutter in her heart and other parts of her body that was purely thrilling.,...that joy that Tom talks about in his speech was palpable and kept you glued to your transistor, day and night, under the pillow when you were supposed to be asleep or carried down the street on your way to school, seemingly permanently attached to your ear...nothing happening nowdays can come close to that euphoria we felt in 1964....their music will live on...and will keep us stomping our feet and singing along at the top of our lungs forever! There’s nothing that even comes close these days.

I bought 2 tickets to a concert by Mike Smith. My wife cancelled out but a co-worker said he and his wife would go with me. He was only in his 30's and probably didn't know who Mike Smith or the DC5 were but they went to see Mike perform. To my surprise his wife stood up and started dancing. Mike stopped performing, pointed at her, and gave her a thumb's up! Later, when they were driving me to the train station, she said that she was surprised that an old performer would sing a punk-rock song. I told her that it was Mike Smith and that the DC5 version was the original.

Those of us old enough will remember the energy and youth of the British Invasion bands. They were a tonic for the US after JFK's assassination. Beatles foremost, but DC5 , Animals, Gerry and the Pacemakers, Herman's Hermits, even Freddie and the Dreamers, etc. A joyous time and those songs bring us back there in an instant. A classy intro by Tom Hanks, too. It is one thing that the RRHOF got right, finally. Each of us has our own mental HOF delineating who is and who is not, worthy to be inducted. The Cleveland HOF is largely irrelevant, IMHO.

Mike Smith....one of the greatest rock vocalists that ever laid down a track. Up there with Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Jim Morrison, John Lennon, Bruce Springsteen, Elton John, Mick Jagger, Ray Davies, Otis Redding, Roger Daltry....anyone, absolutely anyone. "Glad All Over," "Bits and Pieces," "Try Too Hard," "Can't You See That She's Mine," "Anyway You Want It," "I Know You," "No Time to Lose," "Because," "You've Got What It Takes," "Over and Over," "I Like It Like That," -- everything. Spectacular. Energetic. His vocals were powerful and he had more soul than 99% of the singers today. Mike Smith...yeah -- I'd put him up against any rock singer. He is not to be forgotten. He was that good. He mattered. Should have had an incredible solo career....thanks Mike for the smile you still put on my face when I listen to your heavy duty performances with the DC5. The DC5 -- that's right, I said Heavy. They produced a wall of sound together when they performed...they were indeed the band that belonged between The Beatles and The Stones. They had that kind of muscle. Read their bio -- it's one of the most impressive in rock history. Great introduction from Tom Hanks...great speech....lots of love and respect...over and over and over again the Dave Clark 5 made a joyful sound. I agree.

I am happy for the memory of I got my first guitar on March 8th 1964, my 13th birthday and the night of the Dave Clark Five's First appearance on the Ed Sullivan show. I play several DC5 covers at open mics and community events all for the joy of music, no money. It was my birthday 1 month after The Beatles First appearance on Ed Sullivan Show. Luckily for me mom observed me playing broom guitar to a Beatles tune blasting from our little AM Radio tuned to WABC top 40 out of NYC. I was surprised with my first guitar that night and treated to seeing The Dave Clark Five in the same night. I was up all night in the upstairs bathroom with my sears silvertone from 1964 or earlier. I've saved parts from that first guitar which was a righty which I turned upside down and switched the strings to play lefty. Had to adjust the nut. I play true lefty. About to turn 69, still playing every day. Dave Clark Five among my all time favorites.

I was 12 in 1964. I missed some of the 'height of hippie-dom". However, yes, 1964-maybe 1973, was the greatest time for possibilities, potentialities, and societal change before the world started going the way it is.

That was probably the best RRHOF Induction ceremony EVER. Tom Hank's intro was witty and well done. The remaining members gave heart felt but short acceptance speeches. Dave mentioned the recent passing of Mike Smith. And the band was phenomenal. Joan Jett, Billy Joel, John Fogarty, and John Mellencamp sounded awesome. The backing vocals were perfect too. Really well done.

Did you know that The DC5 also met The Supremes in 1965 when they were on tour in England. Isn't it amazing how The Brits and Motown had this affinity for each other's music.

Truth: At a New Years party at my aunts house a few years back, one of my uncles had The Battle of New Orleans on repeat...it played for an hour. I finally got tired of it and asked my aunt if I could put on my CD...she was cool with it. I put on my DC 5 CD and literally, the New years shabang that hadn't been banging really did start to bang. It was pretty darn cool. 25 of the 30 people in the house were bopping around. The DC5, doing the job and doing it well.

If music drives the times of your life, the '60's was an incredible time to be "driven", and most people love most the music they grow up with during their influential years. Plenty of music sounded "original" in the '50's, but the musicians confessed being highly influenced by the early R&B music in the American South. Things exploded in the '60's (British Invasion, Motown, Surf Rock, Psychedelic) from the same influences. Creativity continued in the '70's ("garage" rock, Funk, Soul, Glam, Prog, Punk, etc.) and the 80's, (Post Punk, New Wave, Techno, etc.), as often from the UK as the US. Experimentation with other genres existed in those first three decades as well, but was underground, such as fusions with jazz and ambient. Some of the best song writers from those decades even had classical training when growing up. What did rock music share with Folk music - the rural American South, and rock even fused them together. By the 90's, most, some say all, of that original influence, the roots of R&B from the American South, was evaporated by time, leaving only musicians influenced by musicians who were influenced. Hip hop and Rap seem to have emerged slowly from several genres, most primarily funk from the late '70's. The musicians and bands from the '60's, 70's and 80's were the luckiest, since they had a more pure influence from the originators and their original recordings, which they blended into rock music. Unfortunately, those exact circumstances are unlikely to bubble up again. Sad for music.

The Dave Clark Five deserve the passion that Tom Hanks put into that induction. Now that was good casting! And I've been around since 1956, two years before the band formed. Long enough to know what good music is when I hear it. The Dave Clark Five is good music!

Think about how powerful Mike Smith's vocals were. You have John Mellencamp, Jon Fogerty and Joan Jett singing "Glad all over"...3 of the most powerful voices in Rock and Roll history...but I challenge anyone to listen to that (excellent) rendition and tell me that Mike's original didn't blow them away cumulatively. The fact is that it shouldn't have been the Dave Clark 5. It should have been Mike Smith and a backup group
@normatible97953 жыл бұрын
I agree with you on first parts of your. COmments except last sentence. Dave Clark has founded and EnvisioEd this group. He needed a front man vocalist as he can sing only background vocals but Dave Clark handled the business side , protected their copy rights/ publishing as well. He formed the band like a “ Corporation “

@@normatible9795 Mike got ripped off by Dave Clark so badly and was left with hardly any help after his tragic fall. It was Peter Noone and Hermits Hermits among others that came to Mike’s and Charlie’s aid and we as a Fan Club raised the huge amount of money it took to get him a customized van to get around in. Dave Clark was nowhere around.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I think Mike Smith was way way Underrated for his contribution to the DC5. He was the Lead singer. And it seemed that the girls were always googly eyed over Dave Clark's looks more than anything in this band, correct? I am a keyboardist also, and I always idolized Mike (mostly) in this band. But all in all each member as well were/are Great!

Mike Smith was most definitely -- for me -- one of the greatest rock vocalists who ever recorded. Up there with Presley, Lennon, Redding, Jim Morrison, Ray Davies, Roger Daltry and Jagger among others. Many don't realize just how remarkable a vocalist he was. But the truth is in the grooves of those DC5 records. I also thought the sax in the DC5 was the anchoring instrument to their fantastic sound. It was so deep end and I always thought they were recorded better, louder and more aggressive than the Stones on their releases.
@jayanxiety6 жыл бұрын
JPC Casual listeners might assume that it was "Dave Clark" who was the singer. I think that's why he's so underrated. Had the band been named after a city for instance, perhaps the name "Mike Smith" could have been more well-known and standing along side the greats. Truly an underrated vocalist.

One of the 1st. songs I Iearned to play drums to was Glad All Over. I'm 5 years old banging on pots and pans using spoons as drum sticks. A couple of years later I finally got my folks to get me real drum set. I got out my records LP's and 45's, The Beatles, Ventures, Shadows, Beach Boys, Stones, and The DC 5. The British Invasion, Surf Guitar had a great influence in my taste in music back in the 60's. Whether you liked DC 5 or not they had a kick ass run for a few years.

Exactly the same experience as you only I'm 2 years 'younger' LOL !! I recently bought a vintage snare off ebay - the identical one that was my 1st snare back in '64 - sold Christmas cards door to door to get it ! The inspiration, the driving force like no other I've experienced since, the driving, pounding beat of the DC5. The tears ? Joy mixed with sadness - knowing I will never experience it again in the same way. 'Loss of innocence ?' - I wish I could bring my kids back there for a day.

This is the band that made Eddie Van Halen want to play music...it was drums though, he wanted to make the sound that Dave made on his drums during "Glad All Over." Sadly, the lead singer that we all used to think was Dave Clark (at least in my house) was Mike Smith who died only 11 days before this ceremony was recorded. Mike had broken his back and became paralyzed from the waist down a few years earlier in a freak accident. GREAT band with an amazing catalog of songs. I still miss hearing all those great songs coming out of the radio in Buffalo, NY. WGR55 on the AM dial (back when WGR still played music, it's all sports talk now). Miss you, Mom. Thank you for the childhood filled with great music!!

Contrary to conventional opinion, The Dave Clark Five were a great band and actually in competition with The Beatles as the most popular band in the world for a while when they first hit. Of course all English bands owe their careers to the Beatles, but they certainly are underrated by revisionist pundits.

The "competition" between The Dave Clark Five and The Beatles has recently become a subject for "revisionist pundits". Oh sure, Glad All Over knocked I Want To Hold Your Hand out of the #1 spot on the chart. So? Every #1 song gets knocked out eventually including Beatles songs. By late November 1965 the Dave Clark Five were once again miming a song on Ed Sullivan, this time it was Catch Us If You Can. All The Beatles were doing was putting the finishing touches on Rubber Soul.

In these days when oratory has been replaced by texts and e-mails, this was outstanding evidence that the art of oratory does still survive. Great to watch, and very inspirational.
