So far our Rescue Team has brought in 82 birds covered in a harmful chemical substance that seeped into Mimico Creek as a result of a 6-alarm fire at an industrial building in Etobicoke on August 11th.
The aftermath of the contaminated spill, from areas between the 401 to Lake Ontario, is devastating. As a result of recent rain, the sludge-like substance breached the boom that was placed in the creek near Bloor St. W., and has now made it to the mouth of Lake Ontario (near Parklawn Rd. and Lakeshore Blvd. W.) where clean up crews have managed to contain further seepage.
The Rescue Team is on their sixth day of searching for and capturing oil-covered wildlife (mostly birds - they’ve already caught 5 more mallards), and our Rehabilitation and Veterinary Teams are working tirelessly to treat the affected patients and prepare for new ones coming in.
We are so touched by TWC volunteers and community members who called to report sightings, who stepped in to lend a hand, and to those who generously gave to support the rescue effort.
