Industrial Steam on the NCB Lambton Railway

8mm cine which I shot on the NCB railway at Philadelphia County Durham
The video includes maps of the main locations filmed and has an authentic soundtrack recorded at the time.
I have not included a commentary as the images speak for themselves!
This Victorian railway and the industry which it served has been swept away and little remains to show that it ever existed.
This video is dedicated to those who worked on the railway whose friendship and help made my visits and footplate trips so memorable.
Also to the good friends who shared these adventures together.

That's quite a fast propelling move at 7:20. a prototype for all those Hornby 'Smokey Joe' drivers perhaps!!

Great to see 5 & 29 in action before their preservation. I took many photos in the works when they were under repair and also had a nice day out on 42. So sad she wasn't preserved too. I still have her firing shovel that was in the cab when she was being cut up. The handle was burnt off so it's a few inches shorter than it was! Thanks for the memories, a lovely bit of film from the days when coal was still king!

Wow, a great video of this colliery line been looking for a while for a video of this amazing network of railway, it’s nice to see no’s 5&29 working on the ncb lines and, that both are preserved on the North Yorkshire railway looking resplendent in their old livery too

Hi, Thank you for your comments. Yes this railway was something special. There was a video produced some time ago called "Coals to Newcastle" which has footage of Lambton. Hope this helps

Excellent footage - with live sound too! I grew up near Junction Bank Top and this brought back so many happy memories. The NCB staff were always so friendly and I had many footplate rides. Thank you so much for uploading. Can I ask who did the transfer from cine to video?

Hello, glad you enjoyed the video. The transfer was done by a company called The Flying Spot based in London and the gentleman who did it was an ex BBC employee who bought the equipment from them when they had no further use for it. Not cheap but well worth it!

Hi, I shot this film from the spring of 1968 to the end of steam operation in February 1969. There was a brief but welcome opportunity to film steam at work at many NCB sites in the North East following the end of steam on BR in September 1967.
