Indy 500: Can AI Predict the Results Better Than a Human?

For more than 100 years, the Indianapolis 500 has been one of the greatest tests of human and machine. So when I attended this year, I decided to do my own version of that test: Can artificial intelligence replace (my) human intelligence?
Never, right?
Thus, my human vs. AI competition began. Here’s the basic rundown: I pick my top-5 finishers in the Indy 500, then the computer does the same. Whoever (or whatever) picks the best, wins.
To choose my 5, I used practice speeds, qualifying results, past winners and finishes, pit-box choices, and more. The key was not just to pick the fast drivers and race cars, but also decide who could last the full race and compete for those top spots at the end.
This was part of the reason I didn’t choose NASCAR champion Kyle Larson to finish in the top 5: I believed he could, but weather delayed the start of IndyCar’s big 500-mile race. Larson was there to do a thing called “The Double”: running the Indy 500 and NASCAR’s Coke 600 in the same day, totaling 1,100 miles of racing in two different states.
When I made my picks, the latest news was that Larson planned to leave Indy early to make the Coke 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway that night. After I made them, he decided to stay. I was like: “Man, I wish I’d known that yesterday.”
It took me about 90 minutes to draw up my picks. I asked AI the same question, and it spit out a top-5 in seconds.
The race started, and everything looked great for me. But I won’t spoil the results for you - that’s half of the fun in this video.

I stayed at home until it was clear when the track drying would be complete, then drove to the track and arrived about an hour before the green. What impressed me was how many people stayed around. I expected about 20% of them would leave, especially when it was announced that the race would be shown on tv locally. Hope you can attend every year!

Soooo, for reference, FIFA has used a simulator to predict the Football World Cup champion since 2010, and has successfully predicted every single champion for every world cup 2010, 2014, 2018, 2022. Let's face it, if we give numbers to a computer it will compute and calculate all the possibilities even better than Doctor Strange. But the key word is numbers, computers needs as much info as possible in order to produce the most accurate outcome. Miss some data and that accuracy will begin to decrease. All in all, don't give all data to AI if you want to win :).

By the way, the 'simulations' are just simming the tournament on a video-game (2010 and 2014 the original WC games and for 2018 and 2022 the WC DLCs for FIFA 18 and FIFA 23). The fact that they were correct is pretty much down to luck, given that the FIFA franchise games don't run any fancy simulations with TBs worth of data.
