I hope you'll review Paper Mario eventually. I'll be looking forward to it despite I'm not a fan of JRPGs and RPGs. There is a series I overlooked due to the box art of each instalment but mostly due to the gameplay but it's nothing to do with the Nintendo 64. As for the Banjo-Kazooie series, the game over cutscene single-handedly put me and my sister off the entire series. I didn't revisit the first game until Halloween in 2015. I soon realised it's not as bad as I initially thought. Banjo-Kazooie may be the granddaddy of double act platformers but it's a series I consider myself not to be a fan of. I just can't see myself getting hooked on it.

Gold Cup is so good! I love the Midget class and wouldn't even mind if they had a game fully focused on that. Sprint cars were pretty squirrely. This was a game I passed on because of the box art and all. I bought another game instead of this at first (ECW vs. NWO, I think). It was Mature and I was underage; my dad brought me back to the store to return it. This was the other game at the same $5 price and I'd say it worked out pretty well.

Ah, neat review to see! I've always been curious about this one - I remember seeing screenshots of it in certain magazines and thinking it just looked so.... clean, I guess. "Barren" more like it nowadays maybe, haha, but it always looked like a game where it would control well and have a smooth frame rate. Glad to see it in action and hear that Paradigm, as always, did a great job :) And man, that's a weird topic to hear you bring up when just yesterday I had completed _Anarchy Reigns_ on the PS3 and I was mad at myself for sleeping on it when it originally came out (^-^) I mean, to be fair, the things I didn't like about the looks of it back in the day - the terrible soundtrack, the focus on multiplayer - are still things I didn't care for when I played through it this past week. Plus I really, _REALLY_ hated _MadWorld_ on Wii so I was just closed-off to the idea of any kind of follow-up (even if AR isn't, like, a direct sequel or anything). The thought that they could've refined the design never even crossed my mind back then. But here I was, now enjoying the heck out of it's short-but-sweet single player campaign, appreciating a lot of the unique ideas it brought to the "3D Brawler" and "Free-roaming fighter" genres... and also recognizing some ideas that popped up not only in _MadWorld_ but also in _God Hand_ (when they were Clover) and would later STILL be iterated on in titles like _Transformers Devastation_ and _TMNT: Mutants in Manhattan._ Heck, I even didn't have to suffer through the soundtrack since I played while listening to podcasts or music on my PC. I mean, it wasn't perfect - like any game it had it's share of questionable design choices that could frustrate - but it definitely was worth the play and overall was really good. I found myself feeling pretty bad when the credits rolled, because I know Platinum Games' had a rough go of it until _Metal Gear Rising_ and _NieR Automata._ They had a string of disappointing games, sales-wise, and that always hurts an independent studio like that. It's definitely the fault of gamers like me in the end, at least partially, for sleeping on titles like _Anarchy Reigns._ I definitely gotta keep an open mind more often in the future.

ive not played that, maybe ill need to look into it

@@wadelockard5592: Well, I liked _some things_ about it, certainly. I appreciate how well-realized the aesthetic was (the definitely nailed the graphic novel/manga look; it's definitely not half-assed) and, conceptually, I thought it was a pretty good idea for a beat'em up. To have created these elaborate game spaces loaded with stuff to use in your combos and inject a lot of dynamism & variety into the brawling via those challenges and stuff IS a great idea. But in practice I found it really disappointing. If I remember my experience correctly, that stylish black-and-white aesthetic caused everything in the background to.... well, look pretty samey while running around. Made it hard for the props to stand out and get easily noticed while you were actually fighting people. The score multipliers never helped since you needed to hit the score thresholds to move on, so there was no incentive to ever NOT be beating guys up, right? A lot of my time was just relentlessly beating up people with the same few props that I _did_ notice to keep the score up - it was only AFTER the next area unlocked and the spawn waves stopped for the current section that I THEN would be able to look around and spot all the cool stuff I _could've_ used in the combos. Besides a few core things like the tires and meathooks that were seemingly everywhere, I kept finding it really hard to find and use the more elaborate things like the spike walls and.... y'know actually, I forgot a lot of 'em, sorry. It's been years. Eventually it just became a near-constant cycle of "Enter area, kill a bunch of dudes as quickly as possible so the score multiplier doesn't die down, unlock next area, notice the cool stuff that didn't get used as you move to the next area, be sad at the wasted opportunities" :P But yeah, y'know, it's one of these things where I liked it a lot _in theory,_ but I felt too many pieces of the design actually worked against the strengths of the game. Those game spaces were made to be explored, with props begging to be noticed so you could use them in your fighting. It really wanted to be this big, crazy combat sandbox, having players mixing and matching as many things as they could to have a flashy, gory time... and I'm totally willing to bet that maybe the graphic style only killed & muddled details for some people like me and there are others who had no problem parsing stuff from the backgrounds _instantly._ I'm sure there are people who learned the ins and outs of every stage through trial-and-error and can play it like some kind of awesome, incredibly violent, combo'ing machine hybrid of Jean Claude van Damme and Tony Hawk :D But with the timer, the score/combo-multipliers dying down constantly demanding you kill another dude _right this instant,_ and the look of the game preventing anything from standing out, it just never really gel'd (gelled?) with me. I thought it felt real confused, and just wasn't as refined as I wished it was. I wasn't having any fun with it. Platinum's done a much better job with a lot of those ideas for beat'em ups since. Sorry for writing so much and probably sounding a bit repetitive in places. Just wanted to explain where I'm coming from pretty clearly. I hope that answers your question.

I'd have to say my biggest overlooked title would be Conkers Bad Fur Day. I think at the time it was promised I'd seen it as "just" another Banjo Kazooie (I know, silly). I started University in 1999 and think by mid to late 2000 I'd played Perfect Dark to death and all the games previous and gave the console to my brother, missing titles like Conkers Bad Fur Day, Star Wars Episode 1: Battle for Naboo and other titles I didn't know we're released.
