Excitebike 64 is an excellent example of how to make a great 3-D game from a 2-D original. Aside from the slightly loose control and steep learning curve, once you've memorized the transitions and mastered the TURBO, your mind will be blown! There is simply no other 3-D motocross game quite like it. Everything else is a MX Unleashed-like sim with pre-load mechanics. This is an arcade masterpiece. A tough game to learn but totally worth the time.

Excitebike 64 is an exceptional masterpiece, and easily the best motorcycle racing game ever made. The graphics are outstanding, controls near-perfect, general game design among the best of the geeneration... the game isn't the N64's best racing game, due to the incredibly high quality of the N64's racing game genre, but it's one of the best. Excitebike 64 is a very challenging game which rewards skill, and once you've mastered it it's incredibly rewarding. Managing your turbo meter is absolutely key! (As for crashes, generally you crash if you're hit on the front half of your bike. Don't get hit in the front of your bike, pretty much.) Additionally, one thing you don't mention here is the Nintendo influence. Left Field's original design was more simmish, but NIntendo had them make the game more arcadey in some important ways. I don't like sim racing games, so the results here are just about perfect. To see how important Nintendo's influence is, compare this to Left Field's later PS2/Wii motorcycle racing game Nitro Bike. They tried to recreate EB64's magic, but the absence of Nintendo's input is sorely felt and the game is disappointing. Nintendo makes developers better when they work with them. The games' issues are minor. First I do agree that High Res mode isn't worth it; the large black bars are distracting, and the framerate hit makes playing the game harder. Also, the game looks so amazing in regular resolution that the boost isn't really needed! And yeah, the music is forgettable. Also, the graphics in the outdoor courses are really impressive, but indoor arena courses aren't nearly as great looking, I have always thought. It's too bad that more of the tracks are indoor than outdoor and that you can only make arena courses in the editor. Also, the desert mode is a very cool technical accomplishment (it really does infinitely randomly generate terrain as you drive!), but it's one player only and has no difficulty options, and the AI is quite weak. I guess it's nice that something in this hard game is easy, but it'd have been nice to have more reason to play the desert mode, like there is the really tough but awesome Hill Climb.

@retrosoul87707 жыл бұрын
Matthias you clearly don't know what 3D Saturn game looks like, that's ridiculous. Anyway Falcon I agree, this the 2nd best racer on the platform behind F-Zero X imo. It's very challenging and takes alot of practice to master all the riding mechanics, I definitely had to do the tutorial and learn/practice all the techniques before becoming decent at the game. But once you do, it's still not perfect I still manage to do a frustrating random 90 degree turn out of nowhere sometimes but it's pretty damn close to perfection. Awesome game, I got to the Platinum races but haven't completed the Grand Prix yet. Should go back sometime.

Retro Soul Lol. I own 3 Saturns and about 50 games....
@retrosoul87707 жыл бұрын
Ok...so then it's obvious that this looks better than the average 3d Saturn game lol. The Saturn was a monster for 2d gaming but for 3d (on average) the results would end up being worst than even some 3d ps1 games. You know what, forget it what Saturn games look as good as this, let me know so I can see for myself.
@yukatoshi7 жыл бұрын
Retro Soul I should have been clearer. I meant the higher end of Saturn 3D graphics. I'd suggest checking out Winter Heat to see what I mean. The N64 OBVIOUSLY beats the Saturn in 3D, as does the PS1 for the most part!

This game is one of the best n64 multiplayer games ever. The soccer mode is fun, racing the tracks with 3 other people is great and getting to ride courses that you build with bots and friends is the best. To put it simply excitebike 64 is unrivaled on the GameCube, Wii and even Switch. You can’t find one motorcycle racing game from the year 2000 until 2020 that is better than excitebike 64. The GameCube is my favorite console ever and out of the 3 or 4 motorcycle racing games they are all for 2 players only. The wii with the silly remote that most of its library uses makes all of its games without GameCube controller support a pain to play. The Wii U is a disaster on multiple levels and the switch gets most of its racing games from cell phone rip offs. Again the Nintendo 64 and Excitebike 64 remains the best motorcycle racing game of all time .

I love this game, played it with my siblings all the time. Also, the wipeout mechanic when near another player is caused by a front tire hitting a rear tire; whoever is in front wins. This adds another layer of strategy to the game since when you are in the lead you can try and clip the person behind you, but if you miss, you’ll probably end up hitting the side of the course.

This was such a great multiplayer game. True hi-res mode sucked (can't think of one that didn't) but the control is what makes this game great. Shifting your rider's weight with the analogue stick and power sliding around sharp corners was so satisfying. Timing and chaining your boost over a series of jumps to win a race was incredible.

you're not nailing most of the jumps because you don't use the turbo boost trick. you need to hold down Z when riding up a slope, release it and immediately press it again briefly right before going off a jump. there's a lot of nuance in the controls.

Played this game a lot back in the day. Lots of fun. Had some cool cheat codes too. The desert course was mind blowing as it is truly infinite; still not sure how they did that. I mean could I drive in one direction for a year and then turn around and supposedly all the details would be stored. There has to be a limit? I really enjoyed every mode except the soccer game; I feel like that was just something they were playing with and decided to leave in to fill some more space. The excite 3D mode was very cool and I was really happy that they included the original game in there too. That was the first time us western kids got to use the save feature in that game!

You missed a lot of features this game had to offer. The multiplayer gameplay is above many other racing games due to its unique (to the N64) physics and handling of controls. The cheat menu also offers a good amount of replay value. Its a shame it came out so late in the consoles lifespan. Many of the things this game originated are still used in motorcross racing games today.

Give me this over Wave Race 64 any day....... and i have no interest in motorbikes whatsoever. In fact i actually dislike motorbikes. Yet i've completed Excitebike 64, TWICE. Certainly one of the best racers on the system, and much more sophisticated in it's execution than most other racers(and more exciting). I just couldn't believe how enjoyable and accurate the physics, and handling were. Fantastic FX too. It is easy to get knocked of your bike..... but i just welcomed this challenge. The graphics are also commendable, definitely to be played with the Expansion Pak. They didn't manage to convert me into liking motorbikes, but it just goes to show..... with great presentation/production, with fantastic graphics/gameplay, you can even get someone who dislikes the chosen medium to enjoy themselves; if you perfect your product. So now i'm wondering if anyone can create an enjoyable Sumo Wrestling game. Or if at some point i'll be completing a game based on UK Bowls. HA, i doubt it.

Nintendo should combine wave race, pilot wings, 1080 snowboarding and excite bike. It would make a cool new IP... I do wonder if they will improve the frame rate for the games included on the n64 classic.
@3dmarth7 жыл бұрын
IIRC, Nintendo's Virtual Console games run at a more consistent framerate than the originals, because of how the emulation works. You'll probably find that the N64 Classic (if there is one) produces similarly improved performance. A 30fps game is still going to be 30fps, but there would likely be less slowdown. On a similar subject, I wonder if future N64 rereleases will be in HD. Previously, they've always gone with 480p, which makes no sense on the Wii U, as it's neither accurate (240p) nor pretty (1080p).

Excitebike 64 is one of the best motorcycle racing games of all time besides Top Gear Hyperbike and EA's Supercross 2000!

Loved this game, but the character balance was a bit bad. Ricky Stern and SArah Hill were blatantly better than the rest of the cast because the Turbo stat only affected how lon gyou could use the Turbo, not the power of it. THe difference between the lowest turbo and the highest turbo was negligeble whereas the other stats were far more noticable. And the outdoor tracks were way more fun. Too many indoor tracks IMO

Man it seems like forever ago since I asked if you were going to review this Glenn. I agree, everything this game does is done correctly but for some reason, it's just not a whole lot of fun to play.

While playing this game while your voice over is playing? I'm just like, "damn it! Ride the hills!" Hate when I see my son play like that lmao. Just knocking the hills instead of riding along with them

I don’t know about everyone else but I am so thankful Nintendo didn’t try to do Metroid on N64. You know that game would have sucked.

I miss this game so much, too bad I gave my ps2 away along with all my games.

I feel the same way about this one as you Glenn, kinda disappointed with it. My favorite bike racer on the system has to go to road rash 64 just for the hilariously insane crashes that you can pull off.
@n64glennplant7 жыл бұрын
if that game did one thing right it was some pretty epic crashes for sure

Got this again just a few weeks ago after getting it a few weeks after it’s original release date in 2000 when I was high school. Then, I thought it was awesome and seemed to have an easier time adapting to the controls. Now, I find the game super frustrating and the physics of the game to be terrible even for the period. The worst part about the game for me is the almost magnetic effect of the corner if you go against the berm. Makes for turning back onto the track nearly impossible, and have to come to almost a stop to get back on the track while everyone passes. Also, touching the a k of an opponents rear wheel is inevitable, yet causes a crash every time it happens. Super frustrating game. As a real life motocross racer and rider, ATV off road fury on the PS2 came about as close as you can get to real life handling in a video game. I have yet to play one to this day that has come close.
