This video at the time was one of if not, the most expensive video at $5million that Madonna paid herself, likely from the $5million she got from Pepsi. The visuals of this video still hold up today, it is so beautiful and besides the vogue video, I don’t think Madonna has ever been more beautiful in a video.

The aesthetics of this video was inspired by german expressionism, and it recreates Fritz Lang movie Metropolis and Tamara Lempicka's art deco paintings. The final line about the heart and the mind is a quote from Metropolis. The video depicts the male and the female world. A group of men working in a factory where there are no feelings, as if they were machines themselves, working in a hard, suffocating environment. On the other side Madonna represents the female side (the cat is an obvious symbol) and at some point she penetrates the male world, but in order to do that she has to find the male side of her personality (the part where she's dancing dressed as a man). Then she provokes the awakening of one of the workers from his dehumanizing submission. She starts to sing and one of the workers hears her voice. She encourages him to express himself and that provokes a riot. So the song is about expressing yourself but also about understanding why we do the things we do and why sometimes our feelings are disconnected from our actions and we become a cogwheel in the social machine. It's also about being honest to your lover and most of all to yourself. And of course it's a feminist song about empowering women. She is saying "you can be a feminist and enjoy sex". And that was very controversial. Some feminists said she was degrading women by showing her chained to the bed, but she explained that the woman in the video is a woman in charge and she was chained to her desire. This was a groundbreaking song and very controversial video because it challenged social mandates of genders.

Watching many of Madonna's 80s videos you understand why she's held in such high esteem. It's the same feeling you get when you watch Elvis, or Michael Jackson. Like you know you're watching someone who moved our culture forward, even if only a bit.

This single remix was produced by Shep Pettibone which was released in 1989, totally different from the album version. Was before Vogue in 1990.

The original version of Express Yourself on Like a prayer album is musically very different ( the album was recorded in 1988). This is the remix for the single, much more commercial. The video was inspired by the movie "Metropolis"

The reason this is so similar to Vogue is because it’s by the same director David Fincher. He’s actually directed many popular films since then. I believe it’s due to these two videos the industry realized the potential of what he could do!

Rumor has it, and this has been touched on in several interviews, that Jennifer Grey ( yes, Dirty Dancing, Ferris Bueller ) was the inspiration for this song. Grey and Madonna were together filming Bloodhounds Of Broadway, and Grey was going through a nasty breakup with Matthew Broderick. The line, “Don’t go for second best, Baby” is a cheeky nod to Grey’s character in Dirty Dancing.

Express Yourself is such a classic. One of Madonna's very best songs (and videos!) in my opinion. The version on the Like A Prayer album is very different to this remixed version. You should give it a listen too. I like both versions. This remixed version is a lot like Vogue, I agree, which came out a year after this. The album version is nothing like Vogue though. This sort of remix was very popular at the time though. I love the whole look of the video too, which of course is based on the film Metropolis. Christina Aguilera paid homage to this video with her own video for her song Not Myself Tonight. If you're still doing Christina's journey you'll see that one soon enough! A very raunchy video, lol. I could never tire of Madonna's Like A Prayer album. It's such a classic and I can't believe it's already 34 bloody years old!!! 34 years!!! Where's the time gone?! Anyway, it's considered one of Madonna's very best albums, if not THE best, I can definitely recommend you listen to it. I love this Madonna journey you're going on. She really is the Queen Of Pop. Such an incredible career of amazing songs. Oh and btw, I say again - pleeeeeeeease don't forget her Oh Father video, lol! I know I keep banging on about it but it's not on the discography list you're going by because it was her American released single and I'm afraid you'll bypass it. It's a powerful song and video, one of the highlights of the Like A Prayer album. In fact, musically on the album Dear Jessie segway's into Oh Father. Should have been a double A sided single in both her and the US rather than release them separately in one country and not the other! Btw, I laugh when I think of when Lady Gaga (who I do love) released Born This Way and everyone was talking about how much it sounded like Express Yourself, Madonna herself made some comment about it sounding "very familiar to her" and then, as part of Madonna's MDNA concert tour in 2012, she cheekily performed a version of Express Yourself which incorporated parts of Born This Way into it and both songs fitted perfectly, because they really are very similar, musically, lol! :)

I haven't watched your reaction yet, just the start - when I saw the discography list you're going by I see that Oh Father is not on there. I guess you're using the discography for here in the UK but Oh Father was her single released in the US at the same time as Dear Jessie, which you'll be coming up to soon. I've no idea why Dear Jessie was the song released here in the UK - Madonna didn't even make a video for it (it's just an animated video to accompany the song). Dear Jessie is an ok song, sure but Oh Father was the one she released in the US and elsewhere and she made a proper music video for that. This is the song I consider the main single and it's 10 times better than Dear Jessie! PLEASE don't leave it out of your reactions. It's a fantastic song (and video) that was deeply personal to Madonna. There's a lot of depth to it, unlike the whimsical Dear Jessie. Oh Father really should have been the song released here as a single too, I don't know why it was only a single in America. But like I said it's the song Madonna considered her proper single and the one she made a video for. Right, I'll watch your reaction now, lol!! I just wanted to mention Oh Father because I had a feeling it wouldn't be on the discography list you were going by! :)

Lee I keep forgetting to ask and I don't think I've heard you say it before. Do you have a Patreon Channel? If so, what is it because I can't find you. I went back to to watch all your Madonna reactions and you mentioned kind of in passing that you world react to "A League of their Own", and I want to watch it if you've done a reaction to it. As always I love your channel, you are my #1 favorite! I wake up every day and the first thing I do is get my coffee, sit down and go straight to your channel, you are part of my wake up routine to set the tone for my day ❤️❤️!
