So first off, wanted to say thank you for posting this video and thank you to everybody that took the time to comment. This page and all the info I got here started us off in the right direction with fixing my 2015 QX 70. Went to a car wash recently and decided to go thru twice (the car was filthy). A few hours later, we (my husband and I) were over at a friend's house and that evening when we left, the car couldn't detect that all our doors were closed. The door ajar light stayed on no matter what we did, so we just decided to drive it home and figure it out later. What we didn't know is that door ajar light, also triggers all the other safety features in the car. We drove home with the doors locking/unlocking repeatedly, interior lights blinking, and the car beeping the entire 20 minute drive home. The car was possessed. After watching this video, we knew where to start. We took off all the panels along with the flooring only to expose the bottom with no water :(. We were disheartened. If there was water there, we would have had a plan of action but now we were stuck again. Another thing to note is we tried to find the tubing for the sunroof drains that were in the column in the video, but it turns out they modified that in the newer model cars and saw that the drains were not set to go inside the car, but straight to the bottom of the vehicle, where it drains out on the road. As we continued messing with the car, my husband noticed something very minor that took us into a different direction. The car would recognize that the doors were closed in accessory mode and not when the ignition was on. In addition, one of the dome lights would dim when the ignition started, so we started googling again and learned about the ICM (illumination control module). This component controls the lighting in the car. We went to work again, taking the car apart and found the ICM behind the glove compartment (the glove compartment had to be removed). We got access to the ICM, unmounted and unplugged it and found that it had water residue, along with soap residue all over the outside. I took a drip of water, rubbed it on my fingers and confirmed the residue was slick (soapy). My husband then cleaned out the contacts along with using an air compressor to blow out any residue that may have been inside. We popped it back in and took a drive to the car wash to see if we can replicate the issue, only to find that the issue was fixed!!!! The door ajar light was no longer on, and the car was no longer possessed. We ended up taking it thru the car wash anyway to see where the leakage is and how severe it was. We went through it once, and by the time we got home, there was a few drips of water on the passenger side floor. I dug around to see if anybody had this issue before and I was able to narrow it down to 2 things. Either there is a design flaw with the vehicle that allows water to leak into the passenger side floor or I had my windshield replaced twice before, and Safelite may not have sealed the windshield correctly. Either way, it will cost money to recover anything from either one of these companies, so we're deciding to let it be. I also know that we saved ourselves a good chunk of change by not having to go to the dealership. We know where the issue is and how to fix it, and that's all I can ask for. So sorry for the extremely long post. I just wanted to share this experience in hopes that this could be of some help to somebody in the future as you all have done for me. Thanks guys

Thank you for the very detailed post! This is incredibly useful information. I have the exact same year / make Infiniti as you, but thankfully have not seen these "gremlins" as you described with the ICM (yet) but will be working on clearing the drain tubes this weekend with hopes of preventing a similar situation from arising. I don recall one time there was a bit of an issue where the car would run normally but I lost most functionality of the dashboard, but it could have been during a cold snap or after a rain. I will certainly be keeping a close eye on this one.

Here's a much easier way. First, locate the drain at the firewall. Snap the baffle off since it just holds debris in place and is a PART of the problem. Second, locate the drain opening in the sunroof assembly and pour a little water into the opening (unless it's already moist-this should help if there's a dried up plug in there). Third, using heavy duty (.095 thick) spiral string trimmer line, cut a piece long enough to feed from the drain opening in the sunroof, and fish it all the way until you can see it through the firewall opening. Then pull and push the line back and forth while twisting as well. This effectively "roto rooters" the drain. Lastly, test by pouring water into the drain opening and repeat as necessary. Also, when attempting to dry out the carpeting and underlayment, dont rely on just the air to dry it out. Use a product called damp rid or even uncooked rice since it's a great desiccant(although you'd have to vaccum it up).
@kidritalin15 ай бұрын
My JX35 is similar in components, but not the same in location at the firewall and accessing from the interior (on either side) is a nightmare. I was able to see the passenger side at the firewall up in there from the engine compartment and successfully busted off the baffle blocking the hole. I'm not done yet and the #12 stranded wire i have is not stiff enough to roto-rooter its way thru the clog from either end. If I can get the trimmer line thru there, i may just leave it and use it to help wick water thru and give it a wiggle once in a while. Hate sun roofs, just hate them. Only a matter of time when they will leak. Thank you for the suggestion.

At 7:40 , you did the mod (removing the blocker to the hole) I was considering trying. Extremely helpful video. Both of my sunroof weeps are apparently clogged in my JX35 Infinity. I stayed in there parked on idle for a while, then I shut it off and tried to turn it back on but she wouldn’t start over. I thought something crazy was happening bc I keep up with maintenance and everything was fine prior. I decided to leave it that day, and the next day tried to start her and same thing, it wouldn’t at first. After another try, she started to I went to the local autozone up the road so they can check my service engine light and give me a code to what was going on. It comes out that it’s not reading my fuel sensor, so right away I knew something was off with something electronic, probably from all the rain and heavy wind. Drive to work the next day, fine. Get off from work, car won’t start first try. Second try good. Took her to my mechanic and realized that I had a giant puddle all along the passager side (front and back. He recommended I soak as much up with towel and then leave my car running with heater on full blast. Did that for a little later on then suddenly my car completely loses power. I was freaking out. My mechanic then told me he was booked for another week and I couldn’t wait, so I found this video and followed everything!! Super easy man I took it all up and sure enough there was even more water built up than yours. I used 4 towels and brought out an extension cord with a blow drier and spend a couple hours getting everything good. Had my roommate give me a jump and sure enough, I was back in biz!! I’m hoping this can give other ppl hope like it did for me. Thank you so much again. 🫡 saved me so much more stress, time, AND money

Thanks. This was great. You saved me a lot of expense and grief. I had no idea why I was getting a puddle in the passengers side. I followed all the steps until I got to the part where I had to remove the very difficult to reach plastic part at the fire wall. I was just not confident that I would be able to get it back in. Instead, I pinched the drain tube close to the sunroof to prevent Backflow and then pumped (squeezed) the drain tube lower on the pillar. This blew the clog out and the tube immediately drained. I don’t think that it would work if it were not full of water. I tested it by pouring a cup of water into the sunroof well and it came out on the ground just behind the front right wheel.

My 2010 lexus (with 140 thousand miles, and my wives newer lexus, and all my past toyota's) have never had such an issue. So this is obviously a flaw on infiniti's part. It does seem like a shame that a high end car would have a huge flaw and the company seems to have done nothing. I love lexus and toyota ever since my old 2009 camry with 110,000 miles had an oil consumption issue and the dealer rebuilt the bottom of the engine (replaced rings and whatever) for free saying "toyota is aware of the problem and standing by their vehicles" (keep in mind my mother in-law had a 2004 nissan altima with 80 thousand miles and an oil consumption problem and nissan basically said "your problem not mine"). My real problem now is that my daughter loves this g37 and will not let it go no matter how many times this happens with the drains, or it will not start without started fluid if damp out, or the screen goes black randomly and she needs to turn the car off then back on to get it to work, or the air conditioner needs charging because they leak more than others even when you get new metal hose for 600 bucks, or........

This is the most informative video on this problem that I have found. I had the same problem with my 2011 G37 sedan just a couple of days ago. I can add a few pointers on getting that fitting out and back in. As others have suggested a long set of needle nose pliers is a great help. H.D. sells a double jointed pair that works very well for stuff like this. I also had a puddle under the carpet so in the midst of storms here in So CA. I found a covered place to dry off the roof and put blue painters tape over the roof seal on the outside. I did this so that I could get the inside to dry out for a day or two whilst figuring out how to actually do this. Once I got into it, and had the panels off, I found out that using a quick clamp to squeeze the AC vent out of the way gives you better access to the unit. I also removed the baffle in the fitting and cemented in a plastic eye dropper tube clipped to the right length. The lip on the dropper makes it a perfect fit for this fitting! When installing the fitting back in I gripped the fitting by the vertical "rib" on the underside of it to manipulate it back in to place with the hose attached. As others have stated it takes time, but it doesn't require much force to pop it back in.

People still had issues with this type of repair a year or so later. Even if modded. I bought 5/8" hose (1/2" inner diameter) and used a 1/2" pex coupling and two clamps then ran it along the same area, but then straight down behind my glove box and behind the interior rug. If you pull that you will see a black hose coming from the left. It's your air conditioner condensation hose. It goes through the floor right there. I cut in a 1/2" pex tee and happy that I will NEVER have this issue again. For drivers side the same can be done but even easier since there's a hole already there on the floor (same relative spot) with nothing using it. I didn't even bother putting my plastic thing back in through the firewall. Other possible leaks in that area is a bad Windshield cowl seal just as an FYI. Causes the same issues. One last area is the weather stripping near the side mirror.

Great video! I clean my FX35 sunroof drains every year and so I couldn't figure out why they seem to drain so well, and yet some water still drains onto the floor. Obvious now that the gasket around that yellow piece has rotted and allows water to flow both out to the firewall as well as around it to the cabin floor. Unfortunately access is not nearly as "easy" on the FX35 since the dashboard side caps can't be removed as in your G37 to allow unscrewing of the AC vent. Not sure how I'm going to do this. Man I would kill for a good old Chilton's or Clymer's guide! What a huge PITA. Thanks again for a great video.

After weeks and months i finally bit the bullet and got a new front passenger side drain and cleaned out the rear passenger drain and zip tied it at the top. Ive had months of passenger front and rear water puddles everytime it rained. Then finally pulled the carpet and sucked all the water out, got new drain from the dealer, installed it right before the rainstorm, and finally no water on the floor.

Bought a 2013 G37x for my mother a few years ago. It seems as if the BCM (Body Control Module) fell victim to this same sunroof drain issue according to her local Infiniti dealership. All the same symptoms, horn blowing and lights flashing, along with door locks engaging over and over. Seems to me this could become a very serious safety issue, especially for my 80 year old mom. Infiniti service quoted her $ 3,400 and said that the top of the line extended warranty does NOT cover any of it??? I'm totally confused how this issue has been going on for so long without any recall or at the very least a redesign of the drain system? Also seems like the plug that the tubing attaches to is designed to clog with that baffle in the flow pathway? Can anyone explain why it is even in there?
@RooftopKorean-gc4ig3 жыл бұрын
I agree, horrible design for that baffle. Only reason I can think of is so that water doesn’t flow out fast and splash against whatever is beyond that; though logic says whatever is in there it shouldn’t really matter since it is routed/drained there.
@williamwood36943 жыл бұрын
@@RooftopKorean-gc4ig Seems to me that it would have been not only more effective but cheaper and easier to simply route the tubing through the firewall without using that piece of shit plug?

I just followed this advice to fix my Infiniti q40. Same exact setup. It was harder to reach than was let on in a video but it seems pulling The tube off first allow me to use my needle nose inside the little plastic part to pull it off. For putting it back on I just put it on the end of the tube and kind of let it fall where it may making sure the arrow was up and then I use my longer screwdriver to just poke it in and I snapped it in. Checked it by pouring water over the sunroof and water was leaking out. I had done this on my Nissan Murano as well and they had the same exact setup. And I clipped the little piece out at the end on the plastic. I have no idea what it's for or why you would want to stop stuff that came all the way down the drain tube from not draining down And out of the car

I would definitely be drilling the center out of that baffle, another thing would be getting a grommet and passing the house through the firewall and probably rtving the grommet on. Also thought about a drain plug in the floor on both sides. Could also put a connector in between these hoses and only have to take the pillar off.

This is for everyone with this leake problem replacing the drain tubing from the sunroof itself will fix this problem not the dash if you notice the leak is at the roof not the dash.... There's a holes clap at the nipple of the sunroof you have to replace run your own tuding to the ac drain👍.. Second the roof molding on the roof it also leaks it runs from the back of the car to the front you most silicon both sides of it..
@kova_motive5 жыл бұрын
Mine wasn't leaking at the roof, it was leaking at the firewall and running down under the dash and soaking the floor. In most instances, it's the drain that's clogged.

Man oh man where do I begin on my water leaks. After months of dealing with it and taking it to dealerships and independent body shop and again dealerships I finally found the leak. Had the same exact leak on this video and did the same steps with the sunroof drains. Nothing fixed it. Purchased new door seals and had them installed by dealer and water was still leaking. drove the g from va to jersey where I purchased it from mind you that’s about a 6h drive. I dropped the car on two occasion. First time they said it was the sunroof and had an independent sunroof shop look at it and they thought it was the sunroof drains that were clogged. Nope. Try again. Lol. I can laugh now but that shit was not funny back then. Came back to jersey and picked the car thinking it’s fixed. Soon as I get to va shit starts raining and then boom Water leaking again. Did that trip twice and no fix. Ultimately the Infiniti dealership who installed my weather seals didn’t do a proper job and water was running along the wedges were seal grips the trim on each side of the door (kind of hard to explain) and it was dripping back onto the floor boards where the styrofoam Piece is. Shit would fill up every time it rained. Long story short after countless attempts of mimicking rain at the car wash I ended up just running water around the doors and watching it carefully drip until pinpointed it was indeed coming from the weather seals and not the sunroof drains. fixing it myself by removing the strips and reinstalling them and making sure the seals were pushed up against the rails properly. Since then no more leaks. It’s been 5 months now and carpet is dry but I still have a slight smell I can’t get rid off no matter how many times I get the car detailed. 😢
@kova_motive5 жыл бұрын
Wow, that's crazy! I've had a "funny" smell in my car for a while and just took it as normal. Then the floor started getting wet and I pulled the drain apart and fixed it. After pulling up the carpet and letting it air dry, car hasn't smelled "funny" since! Crazy what water does!

diamfor go to Walmart and get odor absorbers. It looks like a smoke detector lol. I was in jersey and the jackass gas attendant left the pump going while I was inside...the scum bag never said anything but gas poured all over my 07 G35x. My car was Stinking of gas all the way back to Pennsylvania. Make a long story short...took it to the dealer couldn’t find the problem & wasted my time and money. I opened up the back of the panels in the truck...gas was sitting in the car! It had come though a drain that sits in the back of the car. I had to leave the truck open for a couple days and used those Odor absorbers. I also would recommend going to Dollar tree and picking up moisture absorber in the car section. This should do the trick for you!

Does this same fix apply for the drivers side and passenger behind driver?
@4cats20084 жыл бұрын
No! The configuration on driver's side differs. We are in the midst of this on driver's side & can't see around or behind the driver's a/c duct (not the vent as that was taken out) HINT: Hubby only removed the tiny baffle in the white plastic piece instead of removing entire white plastic piece and that solved the clog issue. He removed the baffle by sticking a thin, long tool (needlenose?) into the plastic part & popped the baffle out. That was easy, but how to get the tube back onto the plastic part is where he's frustrated as he can't get past the a/c duct. I'm here to find someone who has repaired the driver's side too. Found 1 video but the guy neglects to say how he got the hose back on or how to remove the duct if he even did.
