Buyer's beware many of the Intakes for the VR30 motor especially with ones from Stillen have had multiple people in the Q50/60 reporting issues such as jerkiness and rough shifting. This may not be the case for all of the intakes here and it may only affects the 400HP variants but be aware that this motor may not take well to a aftermarket intake.

It looks like your car heat soaked significantly. Did you let it cool down (and check the Charged Air Temps) between each intake vendor? Also, can you post the dyno sheets overlayed with each other?
@NickLetsom6 жыл бұрын
EsTee Yep, the car was given about 15 minutes between the first and second runs, and about 45 minutes between second and third runs, plus at least an hour between intakes. Fans were kept on at all times and the shop is climate controlled anyway. The reality is the 300HP variant does heatsoak like crazy, but we've observed the whole "better first run" thing even on our Red Sport, with the second water pump, so we simply took steps to ensure this wouldn't be a factor in our testing.
@BigHeadClan6 жыл бұрын
The VR30 motor in general suffers from some pretty bad heat soak, if you take a look at the OEM radiators they are laughably small. Still nice that they chimed in with the testing and rough timelines between each of the runs.
@johnr99295 жыл бұрын
These dyno tests are neat and all but really don't tell much... First, you can't have the hood open and expect realistic results. The engine is normally running in a semi-enclosed environment with its ambient heat @ filter area being much higher than ambient heat outside the vehicle. While driving, different factors occur on whether the IAT @ sensor (feeding ECU, resulting in timing changes) is hotter or cooler X vs Y vs Z vs W vs... Has the vehicle been sitting in traffic, then gets to go; just starting off on a drive at highway speeds...well, both will have different results between X vs Y vs Z vs W vs... So, pretty difficult to get any real data on something like this, for real world results. Provided we know the basics of what needs to go in the engine and what it has to go through to get there, we could probably know what types work better than others, if we really think about it.

AMS is claiming gains throughout all rpms but claims 17hp or more towards the top rpm range over the stock airbox setup. This is while using a custom variation of their Red Alpha tune for both products. I truly have my questions which could raise some doubts but no one will know except those guys behind the scenes. Was their favoritism shown? They want to selling their product, right? Bottom line, there is a lot of room for possible misinformation but not saying they are outright lying. This is why I've always be leary of the claims made by the company selling or promoting the product. No brainer...The NEED for independent folks to test this stuff and get to the facts to help the consumer. AMS wants to sell expensive intakes with 200% markup, i get it. Could the very good factory airbox setup which came with the car(saving $500) be made to match the AMS CIA by simply adjusting some of the variables in the tuning process? If it's a possibility then this would be helpful to know. I am tuning my 19" Q50 3.0T next month December, where all I am going to have a certified Ecutek dealer/Import motorsports tuning and performance company dyno tune my car. (I have added a popular brand of after market heat exchanger JFYI to benefit this tune.) I reached out to AMS, Nov 2019, and suggested that id like to do a back to back unbiased comparison to see what the best numbers could be for both the oem CAI verses Red Alpha CAI. AMS rejected my request to have a unit provided for this highly reguarded company to dyno test on the same day(cooler weather). I'm just interested in finding out real hp/Tq numbers for myself and was willing to be open and video the whole process since I'm investing and taking time to tune my 5 month, 3000k mile car.

I don't understand. How can it be called "cold air intake" when the actual filter is INSIDE/UNDER the hood where it is 1000 degrees in there? Unless someone can really enlighten me?
@projecxbuilds5 жыл бұрын
On the Q50 they're in an enclosed air box but the intake shroud has air ducts that get the air from the top of the grill. A drop in filter and lower downpipes will net you some game/ especially if you have jb4/uprev/ecutek.

GAD.. Try it with the hood down! That's the whole point of a CAI .. Heat soak too.. all that work for inaccurate real world result. Shows the factory air box + filter has good flow. That's really all you tested. Not the ability to scavenge cooler air.
@Conceptzperformanceczp6 жыл бұрын
Actually, none of these intakes use the hood to block heat from the filter. Some of them rely on the upper air duct to be installed, but that air duct doesn't require the hood to be closed. Running a car on the dyno with the hood closed is asking for heatsoak. We also gave the car plenty of time to cool down between runs and intake to make sure heatsoak wasn't an issue.
@johninnh48806 жыл бұрын
Concept Z Performance the fan blowing on the hood moves hot air and changes/disrupts the fluid dynamics of the air flow. In effect allowing the exposed filters to ingest cooler air than when at 50 in warm air letting heated air to enter the engine compartment. Don't believe me put a wireless thermometer on the outside of the filters, and on the front of the stock airfilter then go for a drive n see the differences. STILLEN and OEM will outshine the others. IMHO OEM is just fine. Fast Intentions full downpipes and CBE is the way to let the 3.0T breath
@Conceptzperformanceczp6 жыл бұрын
I think you might overestimate the volume of air a fan in front of the car moves in relation to what the intake is sucking in; we'll have to agree to disagree on this one I think!
