"The Jungle Car" introduces Hazel and Tuba, but also further fleshes out the personalities of Grace and Simon. It’s a solid and enjoyable continuation to Book 3 of Infinity Train. The episode culminates with the two cult leaders, in an attempt to gain the favor of the mysterious girl Hazel, compromising and letting a powerful denizen of the train tag along with their group. I wish I could chomp into pineapples the way Tuba does.

i love the fact that you keep calling them "child cult leaders" which keeps the empathy from setting in while hearing more about them. You can easily start feeling for these characters when they're outside of the apex and forget how awful they are. they are not good people, and while they might be in the future, they're definitely not that way now, and rooting for them is definitely not a positive thing.

Completely agree. They did a wonderful job of writing them to where they're so likable that you have to remind yourself, "oh yeah, they're child cult leaders and awful manipulative people." But then again, the show also takes moments to remind you of that as well.

I think the reason that Hazel would have the word daft ingrained in her vocabulary but not know other words that seem much more common is that Hazel was made by Amelia, who is British, and the word daft is significantly more popular in England.

Simon also has nooo subtlety. Which is why the Apex really wouldn't really work without Grace's manipulation skills as well as his tactics. He's not as good at hiding how he feels about anything or anyone. This becomes especially obvious by episode 5. Great video as always

Well yeah but these 5 episodes do show Simon's more tactical and tech based skills are useful and he actually compliments Grace's free spirit and more charismatic talents well so you totally get why the two are friends and work together so well. I love how layered this show is. Simon's actions, his hostility when slightly objected to, his collection and display of figurines, his militaristic outlook on everything and his dedication to sticking with protocols all point to an aspect of control, connecting nicely to his abandonment issues. Also, the episode 4 car really reminded me of the first car that Tulip woke up in, but I feel like that wouldn't be possible as the cat mentions that the car was "bone dry" before she brought randall there. Meaning, it couldn't have looked like that before Tulip saw the two interacting for the first time, and also meaning that the denizens of the train can permanently impact the environment of cars. Fascinating

At this point I feel pretty certain that Hazel is one of Amelia's experiments to recreate her dead husband Alrick, because she doesn't seem to remember her past at all, dreams of meeting other humans, looks...sort of like Alrick I guess, with that blond(e) hair, wears clothes similar to Amelia and Alrick's school uniforms, uses British terminology like "daft," "barking mad," and "chap," has a static number that doesn't glow, doesn't know all sorts of things like if she's a kid, and that all her furniture is rocks, has some knowledge of things associated with the British like tea, and dancing (which isn't a British thing, but the specific style she knew was very proper), got more upset when her dad was mentioned than her mom, as if he was of greater significance, perhaps not around anymore, and of course because she transformed into a turtle creature, as well as a bunch of other reasons I haven't remembered. I've had this theory since I saw the poster and thought it seemed pretty obvious, so it's funny that I didn't notice anyone else think of it until they witnessed Hazel's turtle transformation. But it's more obvious now than ever, and the first five episodes have provided lots of great evidence.

What if Hazel is a denizen designed by One-One to help both Simon and Grace? Hazel looks like she could literally be their future child. I think One-One purposely designed her like that to have physical features of both Simon and Grace so that they would subconsciously see themselves in her. That is one smart and devious little robot for him to capable of subtle psychological manipulation like that.

SPOILERS: Rewatching season 3, I realize that some of the things Hazel says or knows are just things Amelia intended to program into “fake Alrick”, or extensions of her own knowledge. The ballroom dance knowledge, saying “daft”, and her knowing that people are supposed to say things at funerals (she says this during Tuba’s ((RIP ✌️😔)) funeral).

I'm a little disturbed that Simon has been on the train since he was a child. Whatever personal issues brought him on, do not compare to the level of trauma he would get from spending his entire adolescence alone on a fantasy train. Weirdly, Simon and Grace's existence kind of proves that the Apex are correct about Oneone. If the train was a therapy device, it would release people the moment it started causing more harm than good. The fact that people's numbers can both go down, but also way way up, indicates that the train serves an active function, not just in helping people resolve their personal issues, but also in exacerbating them. In that sense yes, Oneone is the false conductor, who creates a false narrative that the train is good. Amelia better reflected the train's ambiguous relationship to its passengers.

@@SonicmaniaVideos Apparently no one is tracking the downward spiral of Grace and Simon. No one interfered when it became clear the train was harming them rather than helping. I don't care what Simon's initial problem was. If you had to spend your ages 10 to 20 abandoned on a magical train that sometimes tries to kill you, any psychological scars you carry at this point are caused by the train, and not your life before.

themarquess I dont think we have enough information to make those assumptions. We don’t know: - what happened between him and the cat - how long he was actually alone - if there were potentially other companions - if he was actively avoiding the process, thus causing him to internally be stuck on the train I haven’t rewatched the first season, but I don’t know if I can emphatically say that Oneone creates a false narrative that the train is good. Given that one-one is made up of both pessimism and optimism, I’m not convinced that they are painting this narrative. Rather, it might be the way we the viewers interpret it because of our positive emotions towards Oneone. I think the train is actually much more neutral and chaotic than we attribute it to be (much like life)

Everything so far hasn't been exactly harrowing, Forgetting that there are a plethora of denazens that drop everything to help passengers out. All trouble has been started by passengers refusing to play the game. some of these train cars are really not that bad which cements for me there being a varing sense of difficulty. Couple that with subjective based passenger numbering system, makes me believe that you don't have to have some heavy trauma or have had traumatic experiences to board the train just sufficient to stop growth. what we are seeing is what would happen when these mostly ungoverned forces should ever meet... We are the company we keep in a matter of speaking. I choose to believe 1/1 when he addressing the new passengers said " there is a higher risk of falling off the train then being harmed by simply passing through it." I've used this example before where the difficulty of a car depends solely on the passenger. So example if a person wakes up and after his initial confusion heads out, his first couple cars could be really easy the beach car, play pen car, drag show car etc. It's not until he encounters something hes not adept to where he starts to wonder well I can't do this. This is where we really see what were capable of.

I feel like your awareness as their roles as cult leaders might be limiting your views to "they're manipulators vying for power" instead of 'teenagers who genuinely believe in what they're saying". Comparing what they say to their peers (each other) to their followers, it's the same content. The tone changes but they genuinely believe in the numbers, the conductor's evil and the train's denizens are equivalent to NPCs. I'm glad you're not forgetting that they've made a cult but I feel you're downplaying they're kids as well. Also, sidenote, you are super attentive to Simon. New favorite character?
@uncivilizedelk
@uncivilizedelk 3 жыл бұрын
These two things ["they're manipulators vying for power" instead of 'teenagers who genuinely believe in what they're saying"] are not mutually exclusive though. They are in positions of power, therefore there will be influence of their power among those they have power over. Are they cognizant of how much of their actions are manipulation? Like are they thinking "I'm doing this to get X results" as they do it? Probably not, because it comes naturally at this point; that's how many abusers operate. I'm loving how much of a scumbag Simon is, but I think this episode favored him when it comes to characterization. Maybe not though, lol.
@Stilluetto
@Stilluetto 3 жыл бұрын
Ofumere Omokhodion Problem with that idea is that Grace and Simon genuinely lie about stuff to recruits to sway their favor. Sure, they might genuinely believe One-One is evil but they obviously know where a passenger goes when their number reaches 0 as shown back in season 2. The fact that they are actively misleading others shows that they are trying to manipulate as much as they are trying to help.
@ofumereomokhodion8058
@ofumereomokhodion8058 3 жыл бұрын
@@Stilluetto They don't know that though. Jesse teleported home after he and Lake ran off. Grace and Simon didn't see where the portal was sending him and any of the other kids. They even say he was misled and Grace treated it like a tragedy. All they know is the train is paradise and when you turn to 0 you get kicked off it under the control of figure they see as untrustworthy. We don't have good reason to disbelieve that yet, plus this perspective is consistent with their motivations.
@ariesmry
@ariesmry 3 жыл бұрын
I don’t know which came first with Grace and Simon: - the worldview of the train - the anti-social behavior They may genuinely believe the worldview that they tell the kids. An alternative possibility is that they may convince themselves of this worldview because it rationalizes and gives permission for them to act the way that they do. It’s hard to say because we don’t know enough of their backstory. All we don’t know how they behaved in the “real world”, we don’t know how they behaved when they initially got to the train, we don’t know if they engaged in conversation with other adults, teens, kids, etc. before the creation of this child-cult. We don’t know if other theories on how the train works were presented to them, and the reasoning behind choosing to reject those theories. But calling them teenagers who believe (or convinced themselves) in what they say doesn’t change their current behaviors and outcomes. Plenty of cult leaders, dictators, serial killers, individuals with personality disorders, genuinely believe in what they say and do and feel justified in their actions. Plus, being a teenager is merely a modern, societal construct. It has no place in the dimension/world that the infinity train operates in. Simon and Grace seem to have been caring for themselves for quite some time. Their level of freedom mimics that of adults in the modern world, moreso than kids. Regardless, I would bet money that they were at some point before the train, they were exposed to a moral compass, and thus, there is an awareness that they are engaging in behaviors that would not be socially acceptable. And I think they are quite aware and skilled in the manipulation they engage in, and enjoy the power they wield over children. They just happen to be teenagers. Hell, in Lord of the Flies, a young group of boys murdered two individuals in their society. I can’t chalk that one up to “kids being kids and doing kid things.” At some point, age does not negate actions, and some worldviews are chosen because it compliments one’s desire for uninhibited selfish gain.

@@benepic3101 okay (spoilers for anyone who hasn't watched up to episode 5). so, at the end of episode 5, Hazel transforms into a turtle. most people have already made the connection to Amelia accidentally programming turtles into everything she makes on the train. my theory is that Hazel was created by Amelia to help the duo get off the train. she programmed Hazel with an American accent to seem more relatable to them, but accidentally gave her terms that AMELIA uses, but most Americans don't

I personally read Hazel as an indirect passenger before the full reveal. I thought that she might be the child of true passengers, since we see adults boarding the train, and that's why she doesn't have a real number. The reason she has a fake number, then, is to copy other humans, either her parents or just randos she sees. As for where her parents were, the Train is a dangerous place, especially if you were also taking care of a child. Thanks to this, the twist still hit.
