Safety Note: The pressure required for inflating 1mm thick steel sheet is relatively low. As water cannot be compressed, the energy released from a rupture is roughly the same as using a regular pressure washer attachment. I always wear a face shield and stay at least 2m away during Hydroforming. When using compressed air for 'Aeroforming', I use very low pressure that is equivalent to a few strokes of a bicycle pump. I never use pressure high enough to rupture any pieces. I always revert back to Hydroforming if a piece needs more pressure to inflate fully, making sure there is no air left inside that can be compressed. I am aware of the potential risks, and always follow the necessary safety precautions.

I've seen this done with a small explosives charge in creating large tanks like the ball for storage. I'd never thought of using water but its density means a lot less air pressure would be needed to get similar results on a small scale I would imagine. Very cool.

I beg to differ, expansion chambers for 2 stroke engines need to have good base material, have their joints fully welded with proper penetration and should not leak. It can be seen that almost all of the parts being "Hydroformed" must be pressurized to a point where it leaks, and having an exhaust with pores that leaks gas is not an exhaust.

Hi Connor, great channel and videos, your work is truly one of a kind! I stumbled across your videos and channels as I was investigating sheetmetal fabrication techniques for a particular application (multi layer insulation). Basically, I need to hermetically enclose a short stack of thin metal sheets inside of a sealed sheet metal vessel, much like the weld sealed enclosures from your demonstrations. I have a few questions if you dont mind me: - have you used a thickness less or greater than 1mm? - what technique/type of welding is applied? - which alloy have you experienced the best (or easiest) welding success? - instead of pressurize with air or water, have you tried applying vacuum in any of your experiments (i.e. the sphere or football)? If so, to what negative pressure?
@ConnorHolland
@ConnorHolland 9 ай бұрын
Thank you for watching! I have inflated 0.15mm-2mm thick mild/stainless steel so far. TIG welding is the best option for control and ensuring no porosity. Mild steel or Stainless is the best to weld, Stainless is cleaner and mild steel is cheaper and easier to cut/grind. I haven't tried applying vacuum to any pieces yet, I'm not sure if hydroforming would create spheres that are stronger than spun or pressed ones, so data collected from those could be comparable

Would it be better to get a variac for the pump so that you can inflate at a more constant speed rather than starting and stopping? I imagine it would be less stressful on the metal and less likely to rupture

have you tried to give stuff like the "tennis ball" a little pressure while trying to hammer out some of the wrinkles? i think you could get it was closer with a little massaging and cycles.

How did you design the panel shape for the tennis ball? That made an amazingly good sphere! This is something I have been investigating for a while now. That shape, especially used in baseballs, is fascinating and difficult to design. I have been interested in creating spheres from inflated flat panels for decades (for the purpose of making fabric balls for juggling), and I have not quite figured out the baseball design yet. There is surprisingly little discussion of it that I can find.

I let someone else do the maths, and made my paper templates from this image: www.semanticscholar.org/paper/Designing-a-Baseball-Cover-Thompson/15f5ea08094c4273dad63d2e85fe285b4b65aed0/figure/10

@@ConnorHolland Ah, cool! Thanks for the reply! You found the same document that I found a while back. That is the one technical discussion I have been able to find on the subject of baseball panel design, but I haven't been able to analyze the math yet so I can draw my own template using CAD software. But I did make a fabric ball a few weeks ago using that same image and it turned out great.

I don't know the practical applications, but at the very least, you can see that the shapes are artistically appealing. No doubt I've just not read the information on why this is interesting. Just hecking neat to watch is good enough for me.
