Your comments about the bugged hotel reminded me of Sebastian Coe's story about the Moscow Olympics in 1980. Arriving with his room mates in their apartment in the Olympic village, they all figured the room had to be bugged, and tore it apart looking for suspicious devices. They found nothing and finally the one thing they hadn't yet looked at was the TV. So, concluding that's where the bug must be, they pulled the TV to pieces, and only when every component of the TV was strewn all across the floor, they concluded, "Okay. We were wrong. There are no bugs in this room." Then the phone rang. It was the receptionist who asked, very politely and in perfect English, "Would you like an engineer to put your television back together?"

What this suite DEMONSTRATES PERFECTLY is the fact that EVERY suite in every medium(plane, train, boat) must give the traveler the feeling of being in an actual room. That means it must fulfill all the qualities of: cozyness, comfort, safeness, privacy. This suite fulfills that 100%.The "luxury" factor is a plus!
@MrLobsterityАй бұрын
It may sound strange but I've always felt most coziness in a 2nd floor bed of a 15$ 3rd class sleeper. "roommates" were always friendly (anyway nobody can't reach you if you don't want to climb down), they're mostly students, sometimes "rural" people (or our bicycle club mates when we take a train at friday to spend next holidays well slept at another 500 km away town), roommates don't have access to air conditioner settings (and the standard railroads company settings looks perfect for me). Being an active hiker and bike traveller, looks like I've tried all train classes and all types of jets multiple times.

I was born in Russia, my wife in a completely unusual place (for a Central European). Our life was quite unusual, we traveled a lot even during our childhood and without having anything to do with the Party. Such things were rare, but did exist. For me all these things (caviar, salmon) were part of the diet - and EVERYDAY diet! Not a typical thing for an average Soviet citizen: I was living near aerospace research institute (TSAGI) and there was a special food quota in our area even when other areas of USSR had severe food shortage. However, I used to eat caviar with bread, preferably black bread - and pancakes with fruit jam as a desert. All of this 100% perfect for breakfast. We also used to live on the West Coast, not far from SF. We had salmon quite often, see the selection at Trader's Joe.

We always welcome our guests. You can fly to Russia with one transfer in Serbia, Turkey, Armenia or in the Middle East. You can also get to Russia via Belarus, Finland, the Baltic States by bus. Of course, it's more expensive and longer than before, but that's life. And you can check that nothing has changed in Russia: shops are full of products, restaurants, museums, hotels, transport are working normally. The police do not catch everyone, everything is completely safe).

At that time it was perhaps the only train in the USSR with good service. The rest were simply terrible torture, especially in the summer in the 3rd grade (platzkart) where there is no air conditioning and many of the windows did not open. Now, of course, everything has changed. Service in Russia has surpassed many countries. People suffered so much with the service in the USSR that they decided to seriously fight it. But it was clearly not necessary to cut the country into 15 pieces for this.

When I took the train from Moscow to Leningrad in 1978, I had a cabin with 3 other teenage boys and I swear the lavatory had a hole cut in the floor with footprints painted on either side. You could see the rail ties and everything. I was told that was why the grass was so green along the tracks.
@Altpfurz3 жыл бұрын
Soviet and russian railways had had old types of passenger carriages built in GDR, Poland and USSR. They all had gravitational toilets, where every one could watch rails and ties during flush. In winter in the northern regions and Siberia attendants often had to fix the problem of frozen toilet outlet pipe. They would pour boiling water into the toilet or even use heated up crowbar. Nowadays most of carriages in Russia have vacuum toilets with tank.

You CAN eat caviar like that (bowl & spoon) but most people find it too fishy and salty. Better is eat it on a toast point or cracker with lemon and/or other flavorings (such as grated onion and/or sour cream and/or chopped egg) added. "Champagne and caviar" may be a cliche', but caviar is best washed down with champagne. An alternative is vodka but I prefer champagne. Your breakfast included pancakes and there should have been sour cream. Put sour cream on a bite size piece of pancake with a small spoon of caviar on top. Eat it in one bite. Avoid chewing the caviar to further reduce the fishy/salty taste. Just swallow.
@Lara_Chayka3 жыл бұрын
I will tell you a terrible secret - few Russians eat caviar with sour cream, rather, this is the idea of foreigners about how to eat caviar in Russia, imposed by Hollywood. Caviar is perfectly combined with butter, which is spread on a slice (no toast) of white bread, and yes, in this form we will drink it with champagne. Caviar goes well with pancakes, generously flavored with the same butter.
