For the record, Zheng He was a great merchant explorer from the 15th century who lead massive Chinese trade fleets to places far from China, some speculate he even made it to the New World, I reckon the Chinese put his statue there because they built the new railway and because as Mombasa was part of the India Ocean trade Zheng He stopped there so he's a semi-relevant figure to make a bust of for that station. Why locals are angry? Well because in exchange for all the money and infrastructure projects, China is pressuring countries like Kenya to do more and more favors for China.

This is archetypal dark Africa. It’s how we imagine Africa from Britain. (Though we also see ‘Africa’ as a dense jungle full of monkeys and snakes à la Tarzan.) Having hitchhiked from Europe to Cape Town, I would say it’s not an inaccurate view, though there’s obviously subtle differences in every country. Kenya and Tanzania have a vibe of their own which resonates especially strongly with Brits for obvious reasons. Both wonderful countries with very friendly people.

Honestly, I don't see anything wrong with that fish. That is how small fish are served, you must be used to fillets which became popular in Britain because of the railways. As more and more people emigrated to the cities, fish n chips became the doner kebab, McDonald equivilant of the day. The fish bones were a niussance to get rid of and so filleting was a way to keep the customers happy. The one train a day is passenger (and would actually be two trains, one and either end), but the line is mostly for freight linking Mombasa port to Uganda and beyond.

Went to Nairobi Kenya 1994 on Sabena. After walking and camping up and around Mt. Kenya using the Shipton route took bus to Mombassa. 6 hrs high speed potholes. Took a small plane up to Lamu a wonderful place at that time. Bus back to Mombassa with real risks of highwaymen. Then I rode the original lunatic express to Nairobi. Went coach class and had a wonderful time chatting and enjoying the scenery. It was great in those days. Back in Nairobi the Modern Day Green Day and Night Bar was something else. And the flight back was via Kigali, I think it was one of the first flights to land there after the genocide. A DC-10 if I recall correctly. In those days I still had my exceptionalist colonial mentality. After 25 years living away from the UK in another country/region of the global south I am mercifully, thankfully changed in my outlook.

Misleading title, the "Lunatic Express" was the old Uganda railway and there was nothing crazy about it, the trains were in fact really slow. It got its nickname from the fact that it was really expensive to build. "What it will cost no words can express, What is its object no brain can suppose, Where it will start from no one can guess, Where it is going to nobody knows, What is the use of it, none can conjecture, What it will carry, there is none can define, And in spite of George Curzon's superior lecture, It is clearly naught but a lunatic line." - Henry Labouchère, MP

I rode the lunatic express in 1996 and 1999 when you would interact with locals at each station, it was a sleeper service with dining car and a much more romantic service than this sterilised version. There's nothing lunatic about it. In 1999, the train left Mombasa and broke down, they had to send another from Mombasa that took 4 hours. Then outside Nairobi, we derailed and ran out of food and beer. The staff were wonderful and went to the local market and I had the best goat curry I've ever had. The train arrived 23 hours late. That's lunacy.

Never heard of anyone order tilapia with chips while every menu clearly differentiates whole fish and fillet, I think you did it intentionally for your camera buffoonery. I just hope you did not waste the food and gave it to someone who needed it. There's 2 trains actually, one express while the other stops at every station 1 from each side.

The Lunatic Express was the name given to the narrower gauge railway built by the British in 1896 formerly known as the Uganda Railway. The railway ran from Mombasa city centre to Nairobi city centre and on to Kisumu on Lake Victoria. The new SGR Standard Gauge Railway fails to enter Nairobi or Mombasa city centres.
