Not just in the business but in real world too.. We all know abt men if they cheat they usually do it with a younger woman. Like Megan Fox.. Yeah she's super cringy acting like a horny 15 year old nowadays.. Constantly sticking her tongue out. But I see even comments from girls in their 20s say "go home to your kids".. And " Why is she acting like she's young?" She's 35..since when is that old? And why do women have to be reminded that they have kids and have to be with them 24/7?? Why is that even brought up? It's the same old perception of women that you're a good n respectable one if you're at home with kids n cooking.. Otherwise you're a "hoe"... If men do the same thing then that's looked away.. I haven't seen anyone tell mgk or Travis Barker to " Go home to your kids" Shit.. Remember: there's more derogatory words against women's character/appearance than it is abt men

It's funny he mentioned retouching on tv. One of my best friends graduated with a film studies degree in college and got her first job as a production assistant in Hollywood, and she was super excited before starting. Little did she know, the first severa; weeks of her job solely consisted of retouching one of the main actress's under eye bags in every single frame of the tv episode they were working on. I guess from what she said, that it was an insane amount of tedious detail work, but there was something in the actress's contract or something that required it. She hated it. But yeah, like you said, there's often a ton of retouching in tv and film.

It's OK to not be a fan of a particular celebrity and still let them do what they enjoy doing. I personally find it fantastic to see this woman still breaking boundaries, making her own rules and not allowing her age and critics stop her from what she's passionate most about simply because society expects you to live out the remainder of your life somewhere in a farm quietly feeding chickens when you pass a certain age. I say live out loud and never stop what you love to do. Passions fuels the spirit. I used to have an eating disorder and I truly destroyed my gut/intestines with that, and I still have issues years later. Using laxitives to control your weight/body shape is a sign of bulimia and its a form of purging. To sell these teas as a way to be healthy and control your weight (just water weight anyway) is just wrong on so many levels.
@kandieharrison40552 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I agree and not just the teas, but the "natural," vitamins and pills that claim to help you loose X amount of fat in 2 weeks, etc. My grandma once fell for this, because she watches shows like Dr. Oz and saw posts on Facebook. She ordered a "natural," pill that was made from some exotic plant, I can't remember what it's called, but it was super popular a few years back in the weight loss community. I live with her, so I saw it in the cupboard and asked what it was and she told me, which I was skeptical about it and looked it up and it turned out that it can cause Kidney failure and Kidney disease runs in our family (I have it). I immediately told her to toss it out, as the website she got it from did not do refunds/returns (another sketchy thing) and I also warned her about the teas as well, because I knew that those teas were being advertised a lot on Facebook. I was and still am getting those adds all the time and even had FB friends trying to get me to try them and I'm Diabetic and have Kidney disease, so obviously I'm very cautious about what I put in my body, especially when it comes to that kind of stuff. It's dangerous because even my friend, who weighed about 110 at the time, was falling for the adds, saying that if you have any fat that won't go away, it meant your body had bad toxins or something like that. She had said she was fine with how her body looked, but was concerned when she read that, because she had a bit of remaining weight on her lower belly (which is natural) and thought it meant she was unhealthy. I'm medically considered overweight (190lbs, 4'5") and even I'm not falling for this stuff, but there were times when I had the temptation to look into it to see if it worked, which thank goodness I looked it up first at least. Anyway, sorry for the rant, but it really bothers me as well, it's such a pet peeve that even after the craze should have died down, I still see that kind of stuff on FB, which is the only social media I have because I don't like social media and only use it to keep in touch with family and friends. I stay away from instagram, snapchat and TikTok for that very reason as I know that those platforms are big on selling weight loss "hacks."

Currently 47 and starting to face this. It is heartbreaking to not recognize the face in the mirror. People don't realize how hard it is mentally to become invisible, so to speak, when you used to feel pretty. I avoid mirrors now. It is real and it causes severe depression some days. I hate being told I am just being vain. I personally HATE filters for this reason and always point it out to men. Not to bash men, but so many drool over a Instagram chicks then look at their aging wife with dissatisfaction. You think we don't feel that? Ugh. Done got me started!

Speaking of K-Idols.. I'm into K-Pop since 2011 and I always knew that they (the K-Pop industry) overuse filters, photoshop,etc wether if it's in pictures or in tv shows, recorded concerts, whatever. But even I, who was or is aware of it, gets a little freaked out everytime male K-Idols start their military service, because most of the time it's the first time we get to see completely unedited pictures of them. Or Mark from Got7 is a good example. Now that he's back in the US we are finally able to see how "dark" his skin color actually is. No way too white foundation, no filters, no whatever anymore and for me personally it was a little strange to see him like this, because I'm used to his "K-Idol appearance".

Yesssssss! I’ve also noticed that, especially with idols, their fans edit the pics and those are the ones that often get circulated on social media. Perfect skin. Not texture. They always whiten their skin too. It’s crazy ness

Thank you for this video! I've been feeling so rubbish about myself recently especially my skin. The level of photoshop that's being used by people all over the internet and even the small subtle changes that people make is so mindblowing. We should learn to embrace who were really are.

Speaking of reality tv filters, the new episode of Vanderpump Rules Lisa Vanderpump has a huge filter on her, she moves from the table and the filter moves you can finally see normal texture! I’d never really noticed reality tv filters before! I wish people would embrace ageing and normal texturised skin!

Love this video- it’s not everywhere… its spot on!! The difficulty with talking about them is that these issues are the ones that are everywhere. It’s refreshing and important to keep covering! I especially love that y’all are both trying to raise awareness of these topics to provoke a discourse, but also to counter the mental health aspects of tactics you’ve described. Additionally, the commercial persuasion capabilities of photos and influencers using these tactics is increasingly problematic; so I’m glad you continue to point out the pervasiveness and incredulity of them.

As a teen I subscribed to Sassy magazine and they did an article on professional retouching of pictures. This was the mid 90s. I remember in the next issue a reader had written in wondering how they could airbrush themselves. The reply was that it was professional editing, and not a makeup technique. I just think it’s wild that in a couple of decades we got there. Being able to photoshop/face tune photos at will and broadcast them to infinite amount of people. I have to say that the 90s messed my self image up enough and I can’t imagine how messed up my brain would be if everyone, even the other kids in my classroom, could easily manipulate their image to perfection in even casual pics. But maybe that’s why so many Gen Z are savvy to photo manipulation. I guess it can be a good thing too.
@kate-ne2 жыл бұрын
I think it's promising to know that Gen Z is so aware of the online world (whether it's how social media impacts their life, or in this case how easy photoshopping is) that they are probably also very cognizant of it being so prevalent, you know?

In middle school the yearbook company gave us the option to have our pictures ‘retouched’ for extra money. They used blurring filters, color correction, and face re-shaping. Why would they think a 12 year old needs face tune?!?!

I was recently explaining to my daughter about all the filters etc being used. She was telling me about how one of he friends was really upset because she was supposedly ugly and didn't look like some famous korean girl (I really have no idea who). I showed my daughter so many photos of celebrity before and afters, explained how all this works, and even how long it took me to get over the fact that when I wear foundation I still see pores but you never do in peoples photos in magazines or insta etc. I also told her it's definitely not a new thing either and showed her photos and pointed out where they were retouched. At least she understands now, and I just really hope her friend will be able to. Oh, and Madonna just really really needs to stop!

I really wish more people knew about the history of photo retouching. Then maybe people wouldn’t think that these inhumanly tiny waists were real, or achievable through corsetry. Because people thinking that a corset could get that sort of result then adds to all the myths around corsetry and how “deadly” wearing a corset was (it really wasn’t, it’s fine, most people didn’t even tight lace). But people do seem to think that photos (especially older photos) are showing a perfect representation of reality, that people really could get their waists that small (and maybe they were having ribs removed, which is blatantly ridiculous- Victorian medicine wasn’t the best, I wouldn’t be risking my life for something I could achieve through optical illusion and no discomfort at all, let alone chancing the not very good anaesthesia on offer back then!). But like I said, because people believe it’s real, they’re more likely to believe all the other myths that go along with it. Like that corsets were torturous instruments of the patriarchy that prevented women from breathing or moving (even though women wore similar for over 500 years, and lived and worked in them). Also, the corset myths were begun by the sexists in order to cast women as silly and vain. Mostly because they wanted to prevent women from getting the vote. So instead of this common idea that corsets are themselves misogynistic, it’s actually the myths that are. It’s all very interesting, and all connected to the photo retouching of the late Victorian/Edwardian era.

Yeah it's insane, sure there were probably people who took it to the extreme, as is the case now, but it definitely never made sense that it was that crazy of an issue. Although history is insane when it comes to that kind of stuff, so I'm not too surprised people just take it as fact, given what other things people did to obtain perfection (men included). Another thing I never realized until I actually wore a corset for myself, was that, like you said, it creates an illusion, not just in photos, but in real life, without even needing to be laced up tightly at all. I got one for a Halloween costume and I got a real one, not a costume one, (I take Halloween very seriously, lol), intending to not lace it up too much, as I have some stomach issues and was concerned about not being able to sit down, lol. Turns out that wasn't an issue at all, not only was I able to tighten it the tightest it could go and still breath, but I could also sit down easily and it still made me look way thinner than I actually am and I had room in it, meaning it was not pressed tightly against my skin. In the pictures I took that night, I looked completely different, body wise and even my own grandma, who I live with and who had seen me that night, asked if I lost weight 😂 Of course, it was a modern corset, so probably not like the ones back then, but my nanna was a model and she said that corsets didn't bother her and she lived during World War 2. Doing research about history the last few years for a book series I'm writing, I've discovered some absolutely insane things that were either never mentioned at all in any history sources or that were complete misconceptions.

Interestingly enough a lot of candid vintage photos from the inter-war/WW2 onwards are pictures of unknown actresses, models and pin-up girls doing publicity shoots. Those black and white pictures of like size 00 women in bikinis with perfectly nipped waists who have five men gawking at them? Completely staged. Essentially the equivalent of a TikTok influencer with 18K followers posting an overacted video. But you still see them floating around facebook with captions like "See this is what the world looked like before McDonalds. When people CARED about their appearance." Like of course she's tiny and cared about her appearance, Linda. That's a photo of play-boy model and b-list movie actress Vikki 'The Back' Dougan.
