About maybe 12 to 14 yrs ago (could be longer) I donwnloaded a filter to see what the deal was. Everyone around me was talking about how great they were etc. I picked a picture I thought I looked really good in to try the filter out. With in about a minute of messing around with it, when I looked at the comparison of the original pic to the filtered one I suddenly thought OMG I look horrendous in the original pic. I sat there depressed and hating myself picking apart my looks for a good hour. I then deleted the app and the filtered pic. Personally I had never had anything make me hate myself so much so quickly than the filter did. I would rather look at a bad pic of myself and laugh now than have a fake one that would make me hate myself when I look in a mirror.

As a person in my 50's, it is hard to watch yourself age in the mirror every time you wash your face or put on make-up. You see the subtle differences in your skin and how your make-up sits. So many things change! With that said, a lot of how we age is how we care for ourselves (diet, exercise) and DNA. What's disappointing is that people are so judgemental about looks & youthful appearance, & celebs have higher expectations since they have enough disposable income to combat it! We judge them about how much plastic surgery they get, or how old or overweight/underweight they are. There's really no way to win. But if someone like a KK or JLo was more honest about how they're aging, it would be refreshing to the rest of us of similar age struggling with it. I think to see yourself with a filter, then not, is a bit of a hit to the ego, hence why people are so keen on using them. Sometimes I even feel guilty using a Snapchat filter 😕 The approach to aging is up to each of us how we want to navigate this unpredictable journey, and how we feel the most confident and comfortable doing it.

Amen! I’m 50 & it’s different. Your so right about looking in the mirror & seeing the changes. Changes are just fine! But when 50 something celebrities want to put out a skin brand & have access to whatever they want? It is a bit unrealistic for the non celebrities ppl. I personally will never buy a product from anyone who uses filters in there ads. Filters & very young ppl. It would be a waste of money . And we got more class to fall for that over hyped, over priced shit;). X

I think it’s all well and good to use filters when you’re aging and wary of criticism from random strangers, and another thing to use them when using your own image to sell a product. One is personal modesty (or self-preservation) and the latter is deceptive advertising.

But it costs money to eat like rubbish too so choose wisely. Also, you need twenty minutes a day to work out.. preferably with weights. Other forms of exercise like walking to the shops or work are good too. And avoiding sun damage goes a long way to keeping the skin looking good.. and always use a moisturiser with sun cream in it. All of those things are a possibility for anyone and everyone.. even if mobility impaired one can still exercise (modified of course) and eat well.

This is why i love what Wane Goss does with his make-up brand. I'm not sure if his models are completely unretouched, but he himself said that he wants people to see real skin in his campaigns. And indeed the models had pores, fine lines, bumps. To add to that his product before and afters never look like "OMG THIS IS A MIRACLE", the afters look better, but they never look very different from the original. I think none shouldn't even be ALLOWED to do ANY retouching or filters on skincare and make-up adds it's just false advertising and for some reason it's still skipped over in todays day and age. Also just to add to that, i recently was talking to a korean dude who has a large following on insta. All his pictures are that typical pale face, pore-less perfection that they love over there so much. And we ended up talking about something where he snapped a photo of his face and went "i have skin texture" and was like "yeah, well everyone does, so?". I was so confused. Like i know you're a human, I'm one too, I know we all have it it's not news to me. Am i supposed to be appalled by that? It's crazy how filters and retouching are a norm now and even if you don't want to use them, the human nature of wanting to be liked and accepted and be a part of that image just unconsciously drives you to. I do wish we would stop demonising REAL skin. This stuff gets especially daunting when you're getting older.

You’re not going to look the same in person because you can’t hide behind the filters. I’m 49, and I would LOVE to look like I do with filters, but I don’t. No one does. That’s a big thing I’ve had men comment to me about. They say lots of women look VASTLY different in person. To the point that they sometimes don’t recognize the person straight away.

I personally have never taken a photo myself using a filter, but two occasions I've been in photo's with a friend and one with my sister and they used a filter and it confirmed my bias against them. They changed my features "enhancing them" to make me look "prettier" I believe they'll give us a complex about our natural self's and cause even more insecurities. My nose was made smaller, my eye's bigger, my skin poreless and airbrushed. That's not how I look and I don't want to get hung up on how an app thinks I should look but never could. I'm not knocking anyone for using them, I just think they'll cause more harm than good to our self esteem.

you hit the nail on the head: these filters are really a signifier of deeper societal issues. there are so many facets to this conversation, and the nuance gets lost in a lot of the back-and-forth that happens on social media. ultimately, these filters exist due to some truly troubling standards of beauty that have been manufactured by corporations so that they can sell us more product, but yelling at the everyday people using them isn't helping anyone. until we get at the root cause of these things, we're going to continue to see more and more sophisticated technology developed to hide what we really look like online, and it's going to hurt us all.

I don’t usually comment a lot in videos but I gotta say I really appreciate the conversations that come up in this series, and how different point of views or life circumstances are brought to light so we as an audience can make more informed judgements, or better yet, stop making them at all in some cases. I really appreciate you, James

The idea that olive oil is a big contributor to Jlo’s skin is insulting.

Besides the fact that she's in her 50's and no matter what skincare products you use your skin at that age isn't going to have absolutely no wrinkles or discoloration at all, unless you've had work done or use filters.

Sorry Jame but when you said "doesn't exist" I replayed that 10000 times dying of laughter cause you understand my humour. I LOVE when you continue that part of the opening with a funny tone. It's so charming and unusual. Love it!!!!!

Absolutely! I thought she looks like the daughter of Megan Fox and Angelina Jolie in her IG 😅 But in real life, you can' t tell the difference between her and Huda Kattan from HUDABEAUTY🤦🏻‍♀️🤯 🧛🏻‍♀️🖤

Thanks for speaking up. Especially for women. Women have equal rights in many countries, but we are far away from treating both genders equal. It's a learning process, and I hope it benefits both women and men.

I also think people that do publicly diss the way another person looks it is out of jealousy and insecurities of their own.

Thank you, James! It is a privilege to be aging at all! I loathe the term "anti-aging" because if you aren't aging, you're dead.

So the TikTok filter does have a weakness, it doesn’t catch your double chin. My face was sculpted and then my big ol’ chin was hanging around! It was funny.

The girl who got caught facetuning her after pics was so close...SO CLOSE...to having a good response. Right up until she turned around and said "no, you're all the bad guys" in the end. She should have stopped with not knowing it would go viral or thinking about the implications of using facetune in the after photos and not disclosing that.

It’s ridiculous that aging is a sin . Aging is a gift and many never get it. Be grateful for each year and wisdom mark 💗

I feel like society is slowly moving towards online personas and images, and just like in those dystopic futuristic films, we'll all be at home with our virtual reality headsets on, and our avatars out there in the world representing us, lol. Vanity isn't going anywhere anytime soon
