Regarding the lack of literature about this era and people wanting it behind them; I sympathize 100%. After over a year of Covid, I refuse to watch a tv seriers that deals with it. I suspect I will have zero interest in any movies or books about Covid. I want this nightmare behind me.

My father was born Nov 22, 1918 in Washington, DC at home with a midwife because it was too dangerous to go to the hospital. The midwife damaged his navel when she cut the umbilical cord, and it remained with him all his life. My grandparents ultimately moved out to farmland in Frederick, MD circa 1920 where they could raise their own food because of the shortage in DC. My great aunt lost a child during the epidemic in 1919, and she was so distraught that she became addicted to morphine and stayed so even after it became illegal, so her addiction had to be fed under medical supervision until she died in the 1950's or 60's. Dad talked about the "Spanish" flu throughout my childhood and said he was surprised that another such a devastating epidemic had not struck again.

It's not about if "we" are prepared.. many people in the us .would have a plan.. big out locations and bags full of rations.. if 1 doesn't then there ignorance could kill them.. It's gone from bs China state media cover ups.mass quartine.. all 4 nothing.. the Chinese are recovering.. and there are 48 countries with confirmed cases.. trump plays it down middle east playing it down and straight denial... Australia & new Zealand. Accept that we will have cases..but who won the cricket is more important.... if our world leaders are going to do this to is. By the way, I came across drop dead reports in Austria and Germany in May - June 1918. People were told not to intervene and go ahead. By the time most Austrians and Germans were ill - nourished and weakened by an extremely wet springtime weather. Potatoes crops mostly failed and, although restricted by military curfew, city dwellers made long journeys to the countryside to barter goods for foodstuffs.

My father's mother, Anna, died in 1918 of the flu. The rest of the family survived. My grandfather never remarried so my father and his siblings grew up without their mother.

Yes..and now its been.connected to the great horse.death several years before combining with.fowl thus explaining the large section of horse dna..and it appears to of jumped to some.type of bird later. Actual slides made back then have been found and they are trying to.figure out how to.get.at.the material with out DESTROYING family.heirloom. .of the doctor who made them. I've ever thought about how lucky I am until I saw Michelle Spencer's grandfather and his first wife. Both my paternal grandparents were among 18 to 40 years old in 1918. What would had it happened if they had died or at least one of them? Influenza reached Peru in early winter 1918 (July 1918) but reached its climax late that year and well into 1919.

Do we have the statistics for pandemics prior to the spanish flu? Because how can we know how deadly (% of total population mortality) when record keeping wasnt nearly what it was even in 1700 vs 1900 let alone even further back. Granted, the world had never been connnected before as it was in 1900.

Of the three books I've read, the authors tend to conclude that it was such a horrible thing that people simply didnt' want to talk about it. Of all the wonderful novels written in the '20s and '30s, only 2 mention or tell of that flu, and Willa Cather's short story "Pale Horse, Pale Rider" is the only one devoted to it.

I wonder how the lady who commented feels now? While still not as bad YET as the 1918 flu, Covid 19 is getting worse. Global Pandemic, people said it was "just the flu" and has 2% death rate or more. So, while it's not the same, it's worse than the person Deb (above) describes. People need to wake up.

They say that 4.6 billion people will get the Hunan virus world wide. Deaths may be 110 million people. That said the measures taken may mitigate that. Hopefully One wave will happen and it goes away but not likely. Thankfully a vaccine could be available in 2021 but that is optimistic. Pray for a good outcome.

I think Stephanie is talking about how the president and a certain news channel were downplaying Covid-19 as "just the flu" for a few months. Now some of those same taking heads are back to this same talking point. They don't get that social distancing is what has changed the models and the curve.

It did not. Germany was already spent. USA wasn’t their funeral director, just drivers of the hearse close enough for the Germans to smell the flowers. Fun fact. Hitler repeated the Kaiser’s error of involving USA in Europe. IMHO, once again USA wasn’t the funeral director, just drove the hearse close enough for Adolf to smell the flowers. USSR would have taken all of Europe once they got the tech and manpower to drive off Germany. Just sayin’

The song that was sung during the 1918 SPANISH Flu Pandemic was There was a little bird. His name was Enza. I opened up the window. And Influenza. Nearly ALL Spaniards are Catholic. The Catholics and their church fit the description of the Mystery Babylon in the Bible in the book of Revelations that is said to be the haunt of every foul and unclean spirit and hated BIRD. The Spanish Conquistadors conquered many countries by spreading diseases that they themselves had required an immunity to but their victims had no resistance to and continued to infect their descendents including the diseases they brought to America such as Influenza and Small Pox and Measles and Mumps and Rubella. These are all diseases that America later had vaccines for. If people do not like the song sung in 1918 when they clearly knew what scripture was saying then take it up with GOD. The whole world is NOT FILTHY.
