What is the point of writing timestamps when someone plays wrong note? This piece is 30 pages long and each of them is covered with technically difficult places (andante spianato is no exception). Playing it with 2 or 3 little mistakes that are barely noticeable is still an achievement. Especially when someone's musicality is on this level. One of the best performances of this piece I've ever heard. His sound is extremely rich and colourful. I played it myself and for me it's impossible to imagine what should pianist do to achieve such a smooth and delicate crescendo still being played pianissimo like we can hear in a part from 9:28. Let's talk about this instead of pointing one wrong note placed among 10000 correct ones.

I mean, I could point out the times he played the right notes, but that wouldn't be interesting. And it's not like pointing out wrong notes degrade the performance or whatever.

As Ludwig van Beethoven said once, “To play a wrong note is insignificant; to play without passion is inexcusable" Missing a few notes here and there don't degrade someone's performance, it's the musicality and the passion that matters.

2010 International Chopin Piano Competition Scandal Throughout the competition, Wunder was widely believed to be the best competitor as the audience favorite and leader in points. However, in the last stage of the competition, the judges scrapped the points system being used and evaluated the winner solely based on the final round. Although Wunder won the prize for Best Concerto (the final stage), he was not given the gold medal (awarded to Yulianna Avdeeva.) This created outrage among the Warsaw public, proclaiming the events a scandal similar to the Ivo Pogorelich case of the 1980 competition. Okay...

i think he is the only person arugablely consider as the winner in the competition, as compared to other years, the debate will always exist because he is also the only person who win 2 awards during the competition and end up not being viewed as the winner. Ingolf won the Best Performance of the Polonaise, and Best Performance of a Concerto, theoretically usually the winner of this competition goes to the person who won these 2 special prize. Therefore, the judges should review their grading to the public, so people can understand why someone is the winner.

I agree that he is better than the winner, but I think it should have been Trifonov that he was facing for the winner's circle. I'm not sure who I like better. This guy seems to have slightly better clarity and rhythmic buoyancy at times, and he's clearly got the crowd wrapped around his very dexterous little finger! But I just don't think you can beat Trifonov for the overall sweep of a piece, and the liquid touch and musicality. I've heard a lot more Trifinov though, and I'm a big fan. I'll have to check out this Wunder-kind!

OK, I agree that his concerto was more sparkling than Trifonov's. Good call. I've also done some more listening to Yulianna, and she's actually more deserving than some people out there seem to think. I absolutely love her F minor Fantasy. Your thoughts? At this level the top 3 are always concert worthy. To your point, if Wunder was the points leader, the crowd favorite and the concerto winner then what happened? I don't see how the judges could get away with that.

Can anyone tell me, how many notes that guy had to memorise playing it? As a rather writing guy, am I wrong to compare it to reciting some poem/written words? I used to compose and I think it's not a bad comparison...

It is difficult to tell you how many, but imagine you use your pinky finger to sing the melody line while other nine do their own job with each movement. I hope this will help.

As a pianist, it actually isn't as bad as most people seem to think. As you practice repeatedly (trust me, you have to practice repeatedly), most of the music becomes locked in your fingers and your memory without significant effort. At least, this is from my personal experience, I've never asked another pianist before. Edit: still, I will say that the level of detail and (musical) dedication is impressive. This isn't an easy piece, not just when it comes to technicality, but especially musically and artistically capturing the spirit and feeling.
