Such a relief to hear you mention SPF! I saw a TikTok the other day about DIY SPF and I just about fell out of my chair. Such a bad idea! It's very important for everyone looking into DIY to know that cancer prevention needs to be in the hands of experts.

Marie, it's taken me a while to calm down enough to post without saying some very nasty things to some of the jokers who've commented on here (but I see Cyn has taken some of them on...GO CYN GO!!). But, a voice of reason (Penny) told me these trolls aren't worth my time and attention, so I'll just comment to you. Ignore these a-holes. You are a lovely person with a cute bubbly personality and it's a joy to watch your videos. I don't have to agree with everything you're saying to acknowledge and appreciate the time and hard work that you've selflessly shared with us, your subscribers. You don't claim to know all there is to know about cosmetic chemistry and always emphasize doing your own research into the things you present to us. If people don't like what you have to say, then they can A) post some constructive criticism/comments that would be helpful to all or B) take their negativity elsewhere. It's certainly not wanted or needed on Humblebee and Me. Keep doing what you're doing Marie! We Bees love you and appreciate all that you do!

I'm usually a shadow person, watch or read and no comment, but I have to say now THANK YOU for ALL of your videos! And your blog. I have enjoyed learning with and from you and have found your sources to be reasonably reliable and credible. Unfortunately getting your name out there opens the door to nit-pickers and trolls. Wow! Bravo!! Not only are you Dee-Light-FULL, your DIY SPF reality therapy is straight forward, backed by science-sense, and delivered with kind levity. I'm SO bummed that my zinc oxide lotion isn't blocking the bad rays, but thrilled that I can simply buy sunscreen at Costco, and move on to enjoying other safe and effective DIY cosmetics. Gobs of gratitude, Leela PS: Vit C - no DIY stablizers? What about Vit C products offered by Lotion Crafters? Or perhaps two-part masks and scrubs that contain Vit C powder, but separately package dry and wet ingredients? One portion of each dry and wet ingredients are blended only upon use. Would the Vit C be effective used that way? Thanks, again, L

Thank you so much, Leela! DIY vitamin C serums are definitely possible, it's just that you have to take great care to ensure they are effective and shelf stable :) Here's a good recipe to get an idea of the kind of work and ingredients that are involved: theacidqueenblog.com/2016/01/12/fun-with-diy-skinceuticals-dupe-vitamin-c-tutorial/. I was more talking to the notion of just adding spoonfuls of it to things willy-nilly and thinking it'll work (which I definitely did when I first started out...derrrr haha).

I'm looking for Videos that teach the right ingredients and how to combine them that won't affect the skin. Sometimes I do search on google what is the benefit of that oil on our skin, like Shea Butter in contrast to Raw in Refined, especially in the use of Preservative, and in Sodium Hydroxide for soap or elsewhere. I am very grateful to have found your Tutorial Videos, information’s to identify each product used, similar properties of each solid oils such as Shea Butter, Mango Butter, Cocoa Butter and alternatives. Actually for a nutty scent, you need to get a roasted kind vs raw. Macadamia nut oil can have a pretty nutty scent when you get a roasted kind. Sesame oil can be quite mild and scentless as long as you get the right kind but of course if you get a roasted kind, it will have that nutty quite strong scent that you are familiar with in most Asian food, but as long as you use it correctly, there is a use for everything. As for vitamin C, there're different types of vitamin C and there're powerful skin benefitting kinds too. Your video content is ok, it is just way too generic since you have not explained enough to the depth people can understand correctly and some of the things you are saying here can be quite misunderstood by people who don't know what they're doing/newbies...

Very timely, I was just going to put in an order for some wax yet I was really hesitant because well, isn't that what we natural purists want to get rid of from hair before we use a all natural product. I have already discovered my hair and scalp does much better with a simple bar of aloe m&p soap with seaweed in it. And just before I listened to this video, I nearly bought some wax for my diy products. That's just crazy! We really have to discriminate what we see on these videos. I find I prefer Cetearyl alcohol (the 50/50 version) to the cetyl alcohol. It is part cetyl alcohol but part stearyl alcohol. it all depends on the application. if you want more slip the cetyl alchol is the way to go, but I llove the feel of the cetearyl alchol because it feels like clouds in my lotion

The Cetyl alchol in it gives it slip the stearyl a bit more fluff to the feel... you can buy it in different ratios. 30/70, 50/50, 70/30 are what have seen sold. and the feel depends on the ratio of cetyl to steryl alchol... I have used the one with more cetyl alcohol 70/30 and I have used the 50/50. new directions aromatics emulsifying wax o is pretty much it the 50/50... www.newdirectionsaromatics.ca/products/waxes/emulsifying-wax-o-sls-free.html cetyl-stearyl is the same thing... I am still working my way through what I bought from there a two years ago wghen I first started making lotion and I mistook the emulsifying wazx o as a complete emulsifier (happy accident i guess)... Creations from eden... Creations from eden also has it... www.creationsfromeden.com/categories/raw_ingredients/emulsifiers_solubilizers/cetearyl_alcohol_nf I just don't know if it is a 50/50 blend... hi - sorry if im not 100% on topic - but i am looking for an answer to this for more than 1 hour and i decided to try this ... i KNOW alcohol and alcohol extracts are kind of a 4th category of products that cannot be used on skin - face in particular. I just need to know if there is percentage at which i can still use an alcoholic extract - say if i have a 37% alcohol extract and i use 2% in a cream ,is it still not safe ? or how low should the alcohol percentage in the extract be to make it safe - i usually add 2% of a certain extract... thanks!!

I wouldn't apply sunscreen that way; I would apply it, let it dry, and then put your cream on top of it. its hard when things like cetyl alcohol and 99% of sunscreens you are completely allergic to because coconut and palm can't touch you in any form, plus adding the few other weird allergies that make it harder because apricot is usually in what those aren't. I haven't found a sunscreen I'm confident to try and spend money on, while I look then one I made to get me through has done a good job and im very pale (glow in the dark pale). But I would 100% agree its not a long term solution but when you are desperate its better than nothing, my supplies definitely will never be the same as others. I will never make the exact same things because there is so much I cannot use and will not use because its too risky

these are great general tips. reading some of the other comments on here I feel that perhaps a possible sentence of two at the start saying that your particular skin can tolerate these products and that you take the middle road in diy might help those who take offence to some of the content here and/or who are completely new to the ingredients. (ie there's the more polar view where people do this type of craft because the want to avoid all synthetics - I'm in a place where I have started avoiding all emulsifiers as I am not sure about there status so all emulations are put for me right now but Marie, I'm still loving your knowledge and videos on this) . it's hard to cover all the base but it helps to give a more balanced and less subjective view. as for those comments that are unhelpful, I like to view youtube as a community driven endeavour so content creators sharing tips should not be punished by people having a rang and then unsubscribing! come on community, let's pull together and help each other out instead 😀 it is not often that you come by content creators who are knowledgeable, share videos frequently and always with a touch of humour, where they are always well made, stick to the point instead of spending several whole minutes rambling about off topic tangentiel topics, and are pleasant to watch. hope I'm not coming across as another person having a go. love your work Marie x

I'm talking about straight up safety, though. This isn't "middle of the road" stuff, this is "don't give yourself melanoma and a staph infection" territory. If somebody is taking offence to that, well... people didn't like seat belts when those became law, either, but that doesn't mean they were right or needed to be catered to. If you don't want to use preservatives that's fine, just don't make anything that needs one; it's pretty simple. Same with emulsions-no worries if you don't want to make them, nobody is making you! That's the brilliant bit about DIY-you can make whatever you want, but I want everybody to do that safely! And yes, I do agree that discussion is great! If I'm wrong, send me resources-I always want to learn! I think you might enjoy this post :) humblebeeandme.com/lets-talk-natural/

That's a big ol' "it depends". Generally speaking, if the end product contains no water it would probably be ok, but I'm not sure how much you'd enjoy the use of said product-the peel will stay solid and chunky.

I see people putting sprinkles in their lipgloss and I trip out each time. How do you feel about sugar lip scrubs? I mean sugar is food right... I've also seen people add editable rose buds and gold flakes into their lip oils. How do you feel about this? I bought a lip oil that had dried flowers in it from Walmart. After a few weeks the flower inside started to smell rancid. It had given the gloss itself this rotten flower smell and taste so I just washed my lips and chunked it. 😬🥺
@HumblebeeAndMe
@HumblebeeAndMe 4 жыл бұрын
I've made quite a few lip scrubs including sugar; as long as they stay dry they're perfectly fine. I prefer to use sugar over salt for taste reasons, and over other things like jojoba beads because the sugar dissolves on wash off, making less of a mess :) Gold flakes should be fine, though I doubt they're doing much other than looking pretty. Dried flowers can be ok, but if they are fresh that can definitely be problematic due to the water content in fresh botanicals. Basically, whatever you're going to try, TEST IT. For a good long time. If you don't want to test things for a long time or you don't have a long time, it's best to err on the side of caution (but you really should still test things, ha) :) Happy making!

Hi Marie! I am thinking that this information doesn't really apply to soaps? Not sure if you have had this query already, or if you have answered it already .. sorry if you have :-) And i have already been making soap for a couple of years now, but still, have I missed something somewhere about additives in soap? Obviously there are tons of perishables that are added to cold process soap, like milks, purees, herbs etc, and I am assuming that the process renders them 'preserved' ? Not sure if this is a silly comment :-) Take care and keep the awesome info coming, love your work
@HumblebeeAndMe
@HumblebeeAndMe 7 жыл бұрын
Hey Sarah! You're right-soaps are in an odd little category of their own in that they are self preserving due to the high pH, and because we let 'em dry out into little bricks. This video is more about skin care and cosmetics :)

I've been watching your videos a lot lately trying to study how to properly make cosmetics. And this is just a question, because if it's not logical I'll have to stray away from doing this. But I really want to have juices in my products. I've been looking up natural ways to preserve juices as well. Such as pasturizing and adding vinegar and alcohol to reduce bacteria growth. To promote a fermentation process rather than spoilage process. If I stick to a fermentstion method and add preservatives once the juice and butters are mixed, would that work?

I can imagine that you create products where you encourage the consumer to add "food" ingredients to finish the product off. Some consumers might like the idea of contributing to the finished product. You then instruct them to use the product ASAP to avoid spoilage. Example: "Just add a half of banana, mixed together, and 1/2 cup of distilled water and use immediately."

You mentioned that Vitamin C granules wouldn't work if added to skin care products, but what about Vitamin C serum? Can that be added to lotions or creams? Also, I'd appreciate it if you could recommend any good natural preservatives because the only one I know of is Vitamin E oil. It'd be nice to have more options.
@HumblebeeAndMe
@HumblebeeAndMe 6 жыл бұрын
Sadly not as the same problems will arise, as well as a few new ones, but the general gist of it is that the vitamin C will oxidize and will not be effective. You'll also be diluting it, so it will lose efficacy (partially or completely), and you'll be compromising the shelf stability of the product. Vitamin E isn't a preservative at all-please give this a read: www.makingskincare.com/preservatives/ :)

Marie - wife & I value your knowledge, we make soap and use goat milk in them, we want to start making bath bombs with powdered goat milk - do we need a preservative for the powdered goat milk or will it be fine since their is no water in the bath bomb?
@HumblebeeAndMe
@HumblebeeAndMe 6 жыл бұрын
It should be ok as long as everything is dry; you may want to shrink-wrap the bath bombs to ensure they do not attract water to them, which would cause issues. I've made quite a few bath bombs with milk powders of different types and they are lovely-just be sure to resist the temptation to put in lots of milk powder as I've found that creates serious structural issues!

Thanks for watching! Both soy milk and any kind of milk are completely impossible to preserve at home-unpasteurized milk will spoil even faster. The only place you can safely use these ingredients is in cold processed soap, where the very high pH and low moisture content of the final product makes it self preserving.

Hi, there's no such thing as "vanilla essential oil", but rather vanilla oleoresin which has to be diluted in oil or alcohol as it's very thick and difficult to work with. And quite expensive, as well, so if you find decent priced vanilla oil it has to be either fake or synthetic (excuse me for my English, it's not my 1st language).
