VAL WAS DONE SO DIRTY. danny phantom is a great cartoon, but its a product of its time. there are a lot of sexist moments that are just...looked over. its also a shame they couldnt resist the urge to ship the main boy and the main girl together. i like friends to lover when done right, but sam and danny and star and marco were just NOT it. sam was such a bitch to danny during phantom planet and it came off as her only wanting to be around him cuz he was special, when in SEASON 1, she implies the reason why she doesn't out herself as rich is because she doesnt want a bunch of fake friends and popularity.

I disagree that Marco is a white Latino. I mean technically he is because he is half-white but to say that he is white-passing is quite inaccurate, he is very visibly mestizo and takes very much after his dad, including in skin tone and other features such as his eyebrows, hair, and mustache when he is an adult. I mean, just look at him in the Neverzone. The parallels between him and his dad become even more apparent there. While he does share some features in common with his mom, he resembles his dad strongly as well.

He did not face any discrimination in the show, and you could interpret that as white-passing. Not that he needed to be discriminated against, but she is trying to make a point.

It doesn't have to be in your face, but the entire show talks about racism and discrimination, it's a trope present that is in the show with mewman and monsters. Star even points out how some monsters even have more PRIVILEGES than others. If you don't see Kelly facing any discrimination on Earth, but she probably would in mewni. Do I need to mention eclipsa because of globgor? Let's not forget that thing about Meteora suppressing "flaws" for being mixed race. The show does not need to tackle skin tone, but it uses race itself to differentiate and separate one from another, that's why I said doesn't need to be in your face. Also, Marco does not need to have the same skin tone as star, I never said that. Let's not pretend that the showrunners never thought about race when they created the story plot, there is a reason why Star is white and most of her family is too, they use our history to tackle these subjects.

Yeah, my younger self lost all hope in humanity when Star "admitted" she had a "crush" on Marco. Like, if a kid can't see it, why did it happen? Like, I LOVED the dynamic between the original setup w/ Jackie and Marco, like, he had a crush on her for YEARS, there was an episode that really exemplified his affection and devotion to her, LITERALLY SHARING ALL HIS DEEPEST MOST EMBARRASSING SECRETS (I mean he had to but com'on). And the two had genuine chemistry together from the start. And I also loved the dynamic w/ Star and Tom, they had a really cute "bounce-back ' in my opinion, then the writers HAD to viciously tear ALL that work down. I am still sour to this day. AND yeah, the whole thing with Kelly and Marco to me, didn't even feel like a romantic connection, just filler, and they did NOTHING with her, which honestly, really disappointed me, cuz, she seems like she could have so much potential to become her own character, and yeah, I also adore her design... Who doesn't?

A lot of the time, black girls get put as the "interesting rest stop" in animated series where we already know what the endgame will be. Kelly got sidelined so hard and I wish she got to be in a better series. The perspective of diversity tends to go from a very white lens. And while I think fanfics can be great, it shouldn't be so lopsided where people have to take on the role of writer just to be represented fairly. But the main villain at the end gets let off with a "nobody listens to bigots anyway" message, so what can I expect. Or that's what I /would/ say if there was a second season of Star 😎

I wish the series was more focused on the lore instead of the ships. I hated how Marco was like goin from chick to chick and star was actin a bit like a “pick me.” It was so painful to watch. The most frustrating bit is that charters like Kelly, Tom and Jackie could have been done so much better and added to the story. But alas they had to be shoved aside for the main couple which honestly is kinda 12 yr old fanfic shit.

Other TV series that reminded me about the disposable black woman, is Descendants 2, the first time I watched, I didn't get it, but the second time, my mind blown up, about the media constantly and the in a "low-key" way reinforces that we black women can't be loved and we'ren't capable of loving someone. i didn't really watch svtfoe but even when i heard about star x marco i really didn't like it.. the main male and female characters don't always have to end up together!! it always frustrates me when shows do that, best friends exist and they don't always need to fall in love. it would be so refreshing to see a show of 2 best friends of the opposite gender who end up with someone besides the other lead, and i have yet to see a show that does that

I honestly thought that when they started dating other characters the show was going to break the trope. I was so happy for that, especially since at first Marco liked this girl named Jackie. Since childhood is filled with a lot of love interests, and picking "the one" who is your childhood friend and making that a lasting marriage is such a rare thing in real life. It's good to explore a bit. Like Marco and Star had some chemistry, but they were so wrong for each other. They didn't mix as well as the other characters did for them.

I thought it was just me when i kept noticing this pattern. Like with Amber Bennett's character in the 'Invincible' animation series. The people who adapted it made big deal about adding diversity but it ended up feeling somewhat performative or hollow, like in other cases where the black character ends up pushed to the side or written in without the depth and impact that other characters are afforded. There's more of an emphasis on creators demonstrating how 'woke' they are by putting black characters in their shows - or showing how cool and not-racist the main characters are because they are willing to date them - but the quality or impact of those black characters' depictions is left un-interrogated. Sometimes it feels like they are included to meet a progressiveness quota, especially when black people (specifically black women in these cases) are not meaningfully included in the production process or, alternatively, care is not taken to understand and translate how that character's blackness would shape them and affect the way they move through the world. They can often be left feeling like white characters under a veneer of ethnicity or, on the other end of the spectrum, a walking collection of stereotypes and racialised tropes.

Idk if the show had more plans for Kelly but it was frustrating how her only role ended up being her relationship to guys (her ex and then Marco) and we never even got proper closure with her. Also, I noticed how cartoons often have Asian female characters be the bully or have a rich stuck up family. It’s annoying because it plays into the “model minority” trope that vilifies Asians when they excel or succeed.

I knew there was something fishy regarding this troupe..Writers need to do better, I don’t like seeing black characters (particularly black female characters) just get pushed to the sidelines like that. I think it's important that you touched on how Marco is white-passing and how he is white Latino. I don't think this is talked that much about white people or white mixed from Latin America. I know that what I'm about to say is a little off-topic, or it's just too much, but hear me out. I live in Brazil, and I'm white, but most Americans, would say otherwise and just say that I'm just Latino because I'm from Brazil or because I live in Latino America. I don't like how people reduced being Latino to a color and how people have been pushing this idea that just because we live here we should just embrace this, but what people don't think is how harmful this is. Racism and discrimination still exist here and pushing this idea that we are all Latino makes some white people here think they can be excused for racism and discrimination because we are all Latinos, and we are all mixed. Colorism exists among white people too, but it's not talked about a lot, like I'm not the kind of white that is pale like most American white people are, but I'm white enough and privileged more than my sister who is black. My grandpa from my mother's part is black and his wife my grandma is white, but my mother came out white and my other two aunties didn't. So my mother had my sister first with another guy and later on, she had me with my dad. We are very different, like my father is alive, and her father isn't, I had never been discriminated against for my color, but she had, I have a pretty stable life, and she doesn't even though she is light-skinned. By that, I can't go around saying that I'm half-black because my grandpa is or being Latino. This is not how genetics work, and it's not fair for me to go around speaking that I am part of a marginalized group when I clearly am not. Don't get me wrong, it's not that easy to know who is white or not because genetics are complicated and most of the people here don't know their heritage. My cousin from my mother's part does not have a pretty lighter asking or darker skin, but he has a father who is kinda present, and his brother who is clearly black from another father does not. My cousin is doing well, but his brother is not, and he's going down a bad path because his life is not that stable. Latino Americans have been colonized by white people too and there is a certain location or region that has most of the people with light skin clearly white or not and some poor areas with some people with light skin clearly white or don't but with most dark skin or clearly black. Most of the white people here clearly know their heritage (I said most, but not everyone. Brazil has a bad tracking reputation with its heritage), but I assure you that I have heard a lot from white and PALE Brazilians that out there Americans or their neighbors treat them as Latinos just because they were born here, and they start acting like they are from a marginalized group even though if they didn't know were they are from the would assume they are white. Yes, Marco is white-passing because of colorism. Here in Brazil, (excluding out there) he would be considered pardo or even white depending on how light his skin is, and he would even be considered white. Also, just because he looks more like his father does not mean he is not half white enough or is not white-passing enough don't be like the other people who think about being Latino is resuming an entire race to their nationality or as just one color or type of features.

I hate what they did to/with Kelly’s character, I really liked her and she did *not* get enough screentime, I definitely agree with you 100%. On another note, I still feel Tom and Marco were the real deal, and should have been the only major, official [romantic & healthy] relationship by the end. I loved their chemistry the most, and it did *not* feel like a typical, cishet male platonic friendship to me. I honestly don’t care much for any other pairing, those two were the only ones that really felt right to me in that way, but of course Disney didn’t do it, because then it be gaaaaaay (oh the horror)!

I used to like StarVs but after how they treated every other potiential love interest as disposable besides the popular pairing... even Tom and Marco were a better couple than those two. They brought out the WORST in each other. Kelly deserved so much better... Marco was wrong for how terribly he treated her. I'm so happy I stopped watching this show after a few S1 episodes. I predicted this show would be a train wreck and a headache. I feel like this show could have been improved if it stayed focused on Star living on Earth and dealing with everyday problems. Also I hate Tom, I can't stand characters who are the ex boyfriend/girlfriend who can't move on. I get his character is about exploring that concept, but if it was me I would have him get over Star when he is first introduced and then make him either a villain or a friend to the main characters.

Star vs. really should have gutted the shipping all together and just focused on the magic and the past queens lore. Like they really couldnt give marco anything else to do other than string along kelly until eventually ditching her for a girl with a bf. If they really didnt care about giving marco and kelly a proper love story or even an OFFICIAL ON SCREEN BREAKUP then what they should have done is keep them friends and have like maybe her and marco go on a bunch of adventures, where her and marco try to talk through all of marcos feelings for star and kelly does the same for tad. Maybe there could be some message about moving on or something. Then maybe on one of the adventures they uncover some lore about the world and that could be the instigator for the main villain, instead of mina’s whatever story. Or have marco’s monster arm come back. I mean it was there already, they might as well have used it. Kelly maybe could have been the only person that saw marcos arm turn back to a monster and thats why they spend so much time together

I started to rewatch it and this show was a mess. Star and Marco both regressed as characters. Star straight up did not care about anyone else. She kept causing her own problems and the problems for EVERYONE else, so they made other characters even more unlikable to make her look better. The show forced Marco and Jackie to break up, for no reason. It's like every episode has different writers.

Personally i dont think they were even really together , its been a hot minute since I've watched it ( though i have watched it about 4 times in its completion). While id definitely say they were feeling each other it only ever seemed like a relationship to take super serious when they broke up and id say compares to his "thing" to Hekapoo though Kelly's was much more personal ( they both admit they are engaging with each other to assist in them with coping with their lingering feelings for Kellys actual ex and what's more of a Major Crush in Star ) which already has their relationship not really on a major THING for me outside of liking Kelly who is a cool side character but honestly she wasn't ever a girlfriend to he disposable. Someone down in here in the commnen'ts said they were pg fuck buddies and i'm inclined to agree. So i don't really think its and disposable black girlfriend function as much as a disposable relationship. HOWEVER then not "seperating" or agreeing to just be friends on screen would have been better but honestly even when we find out Kelly refers to Marco as a Break Up Buddy not a boyfriend and that's oddly telling of how she viewed the arrangement in my opinion. I just wanna say this I am black women who enjoy watching this shows and many others the time it was on. The time it was on I found it weird,funny, warm, and comforting. Overall a nice experience regardless how black women and girls was being portrayed in their roles within the stories. It never hidden my experience or effected my mood. Because some of those aspects regardless negative or positive are realistic towards blacks women and girls in some parts of their lives.Regardless it’s in their household, academics, friendships, mental health, community and others. Even so when watching a show or just enjoying myself these thoughts doesn’t come in my mind because at end of day I just came to watch a show that would allow me to escape from reality just for a bit not self validation. Secondly you and supporters complain about black woman treatment. Like no offense but black woman and girls can be a protagonist, antagonist, villain, hero, side kick, supporter and many others but but doesn’t mean they are terrible people. A character shouldn’t always have to be a saint, pushover, overly friendly and flawless to be an interesting character with good development. The problematic ones can be quite interesting as well and give just nice stories. Sometimes even better one than the characters that nice or seen as perfect or saint. Also noted this also applies for non black woman and girls as well. Regardless I would still find them likable or enjoyable to be around and so would others black woman and girls such as myself. So in conclusion before you wanna say this show is awful, racists and dangerous toward black females image just like in your others videos have ever comes to your mind ? Are there blacks women and girls born with blue, green, and gray’s eye colors beside brown? Also, does blacks women has other hair texture like straight, wavy, and curly and kinky besides just 4c. Do does Also melanin comes in all shade not just all brown and dark skin? Seriously because you and your supporters are just hypocrites when fit your needs. Seriously it’s ridiculous at this point. You and supporters act there aren’t black girls and women who do have different hair textures, eyes colors, skin tones, and mix families. I am a brown women with brown eyes and 4c texture with family members with different skin tone but see myself all the time just to feel worthy or good about myself.
