People seem to always forget the fact that being Latino/Hispanic is an ETHNICITY not a race. It's frustrating when people always assume that all Latinos have tan skin when there are a ton that are way darker and way lighter. I myself, am Hispanic with very light skin and dark curly hair. All Latinos don't look the same...

Disney also whitewashed Fred and with him it's native erasure because in the comics the character is Ainu (native Japanese). What's worse is that the Ainu community is basically never represented (I can't think of any other character I've seen that is Ainu) and they could have given them something meaningful in a big budget Disney movie. Instead we get another comic relief white guy
@odie-coyote
@odie-coyote Жыл бұрын
As an Ainu person, I have complicated feelings about this because I don't want these companies to get their culture-vulture claws into us. marvel's "kabuki" character, for instance, WALLOWS in the sexual violence and imperial violence against feminized Ainu people. With western writers this comfortable flaunting their sexual and violence fantasies against us, and turning us into monster or animal people... yeah I don't trust their version of "representation." Turning Fred white is a huge problem (for a lot of historical reasons etc etc), and if he had to be changed, it could have been to anything. Either way, it's not representation unless we're the ones representing it.

Darker skinned Latinas are not accepted though, both from other Latinos and Anglo whites. Please read up on Amara La Negra’s experience on colorism, as people like her are thought of as too black to be part of the community. People with darker skin and curly hair need more representation in all communities.

The issue is that the Latino community is also very racist and colorist, and don’t accept darkskinned Latinos into their community Even with Encanto people were very racist towards Pepa. I’d say it’s colorist to have her be the only Afro latina in the family but also lightskinned when shown that her little brother could be darkskinned In terms of curly hair, Brazil and other Latin American countries would have to make huge natural hair movements because black women’s hair in those areas are not accepted Then we have the actor that plays Namor in Wakanda Forever. A lot of (white/white passing) Mexicans are racist towards his character because he is indigenous We have to address this is and has been an issue for a long time, as it is with any other colonized parts of the world

I know some latinas and my Aunt(black) that are very light. Very white passing. I don't think you have to LOOK latina to be latina. After watching all: I COMPLETY get it. I wouldn’t be surprised if someone thought concept art Honeylemon matched their idea of the “typical” Latina, and had no idea that lighter-skinned Latinos exist. I certainly didn’t until I met some irl and saw them more in cartoons. And I think that should be included in the message of “Latinos can look like anything”. But ultimately I think Encanto did this better because there were people of all skin tones, sizes, and hair types in just one village. I definitely agree with what you said about Baymax tho. Speaking as a light-skinned Latine, I couldn’t tell that Honey Lemon was Latina until I was told so, and I live in a place where there’s a diverse Latino community with Afro-Latinos, White Latinos, Indigenous Latinos, etc. And honestly like in hindsight yea I can see her as Latina but it felt like something that was pushed to the side, y’know?? Like aside from her accent and the “mi casa su casa” joke, the writers did not put effort into making it clear she was Latina. And honestly changing the race from Asian to White Latina (arguably white, but also I look white even tho on my mom’s side it’s defo more indigenous mesoamerican Latino so idk) was quite pointless since they took no effort to make her undeniably Latina (ESPECIALLY since like you said Latinos can look any way so it’s harder to pinpoint Latino representation in media unless it’s explicitly shown in some way - without becoming a stereotype at least)

I've noticed that it's not just Honey Lemon who looks similar to Rapunzel face-wise. A Tumblr user compared all the Disney and Pixar girls in 2015 with side by side face comparisons. All of them had similar facial structure, despite Honey Lemon and Go-Go clearly not being white. For further contrast, she did a side by side face comparison of Disney and Pixar male characters, finding much more diverse facial structure. Another post that went viral was a comment from Frozen's animator, Michael Lee when he said "animating female characters are extremely difficult. They have to go through a range of emotions, and having a film with two female characters and building distinguishing aspects was hard." So unfortunately, it's not just women of color. It's women in general and goes back to what you were saying on your fatphobia video about Hollywood's beauty standards. Disney can do better than this!
@bunnychu15
@bunnychu15 Жыл бұрын
P.S. I just wanted to add that I'm not by ANY means saying Disney changing the races for marketing purposes was right. I FULLY agree that Disney was just doing that to add in more white characters and after seeing Honey Lemon's concept art, I'm really irritated we didn't get that version of her. I adore Honey Lemon and even considered cosplaying her at one point. However, at that point, Disney already has several white and white passing female characters, around 10 of which had blonde-ish hair. The only reason I included the quote from Michael Lee and the comparison of the facial structure of the girls was to point out the broader issue. That being, Disney tends to go with the traditional Hollywood beauty standards (again, as you pointed out in your other video on fatphobia) and because of that, they don't even bother straying away from the same facial structure for their animated female characters. Women of different sizes and races have different facial structures so when they don't see themselves on screen, it's disappointing. It wouldn't kill Disney to make a slightly curvier female character (especially since Big Hero 6 already had Honey Lemon, Go-Go, and Aunt Cass to work with in Big Hero 6, a franchise where the characters weren't princesses! I also fully agree that Disney's animators are lazy on purpose sometimes. When Wreck it Ralph 2's first trailer was released, Disney got a lot of backlash from fans because they Americanized Mulan, they made Merida slightly thinner (and redid her dress and hair), and they whitewashed Tiana (and Pocahontas...and Jasmine...and Moana). Anika Noni Rose stepped in and the animator gave the excuse that "CGI animation did different things to the characters’ color tones in different light compares to hand drawn original characters." Anika Noni Rose had to politely explain to them that the reason so many fans complained about Tiana's redesign was because little girls want to see themselves in the Disney princesses and by taking away Tiana's defining features (rich skin, rounded nose, wider eyes, darker hair, etc.), they were taking away something that we "rarely get to see in fantasy." Disney responded by making Tiana's design closer to her original, switching Merida's closer to her original, and darkening the skin tones of all the other affected princesses. So yeah, Disney definitely did this on purpose. Disney, do better!

I guess her accent was supposed to signifiy it because she had one if i believe?? but other than that i thought she was caucasian or at best asian of some sort since two other characters in that cast were asian. As a white latino the comments from other white latinos irk me a bit. Let me explain... yes I get that Americans have this perception that latinos are all mixed-race or tan-skinned mediterraean people, I also grew up with Americans on the internet not believing I was white because I said I was Chilean. BUT, and this is a big big but, I NEVER lacked representation. Most Latin shows, no matter where you are from in LatAm, have primarily white and light skin casts; think El Chavo del Ocho, Caso Cerrado, La Rosa de Guadalupe, Violeta, Avenida Brasil, El Chapulin Colorado and so on, MOSTLY white and light skin. So whenever I hear a Latino complaining about a lack of white-latino representation I just have to roll my eyes because Americans being ignorant doesn't equal us not being widely represented.

i’m a latina, born and raised in a hispanic country, and being here for 19 years of my life. latino is people are originally from someone who comes from latin/south america or the caribbean, hispanic is spanish-speaking people from spanish-speaking countries. i am a light skinned latina with straight hair. encanto is an example of great hispanic and latino representation, pepa is light skinned with light hair and green eyes. not everyone who falls in the latino umbrella is tanned or dark skinned, there’s many people i know who do not fall under this umbrella. disney has had representation and is still consistently trying to give wider representation to these audiences, from the owl house, encanto, the proud family, elena of avalon, coco, stuck in the middle, and so, SO many more, and it’s not limited to the characters but this extends to their casting choices and creators. honey lemon, while to other audiences outside of the umbrella might seem offensive or a misrepresentation (like the case with encanto), but many latinos don’t get heated over this, if i asked ANYONE i know if they care about honey lemon’s skin color and it’s more than likely that not many will get offended. many people are fighting our battles when most of us just don’t care much, while honey lemon was not the best example of representation for a specific percentage, it doesn’t mean they ruined her character. you should try and get in touch with latinos and let their voices be heard, get their opinions in matters like this, because in this video i just heard how you specifically didn’t like the representation, but the demographic it’s centered about is not one you fall under. also, disney marketing baymax exclusively is specifically and marketing tactic. this movie isn’t really for grown people, it’s for KIDS. kids are going to want a toy of the lovable, squishable character in the movie, it’s the same for lilo and stitch, it’s the same for other franchises with very recognizable mascot characters.

Exactly, I feel like people from other groups always try to teach us about our own business all the time. I had a British guy in my residence telling me that I'm catholic cause' I'm a latin christian... I'm a protestant and started speaking out, cause' not all latinos are catholic and he is not the one who should tell what I am. Having American black people and white people trying to explain their ideas of race to me and trying to define our experiences is to tiring, we should be the ones talking about this. I don't even like the use of the term POC, it seems arbitrary and just further divides people. No, don't use a term invented in the American Apartheid to define me or describe me without my consent, specially if I'm not from the USA and don't share the same history. The ideas of latinos about ourselves are always lost in translation and I feel that we need our own essayists to give our perspective because this is upsetting

We should have these conversations because colorism in our community is so bad and NO ONE is talking about it. The topic of “being white” is a lot more complex then most people make it out to be. Historically, being white has always incorporated an amount of power to it, it hasn’t always just been skin color. Their was the Irish being excluded in being recognized as white due to their low status during early immigration. Then instances like Sarah Rector who was named white due to becoming oil rich, despite being a black girl and having dark skin. Culture likes to fade in and out different cultures into categories based on whatever events are happening in the world. Regardless, white by nature is founded wholly on desperation, privilege, and bias. White-passing characters are absolutely no different then just making the characters white to begin with. If media wants to have a person of color, they need to add more attributes that more so clearly show their ethnicities. Big lips aren’t enough. Just being dark isn’t enough. Barely curly hair isn’t enough. Yeah people exist who don’t have every last colored feature but that shouldn’t be an excuse to be lazy and as white-passing and white-catering as humanly possible. Nobody’s going to be mad if you give your mixed character textured hair and darker skin. All you’ll be doing is pushing away the people you really shouldn’t want part of your community to began with.

She was saying that an all Japanese cast is already diverse, but then they changed people's ethnicities/races to add diversity. However that is literally against the definition of diversity, because diversity is of multiple types of things (genders, races, cultures, etc), having an all (or almost all) ethnically Japanese cast in Japan is not very diverse. A cast of black, Asian, white, Hispanic, indigenous, etc, IS diverse, no matter where it is set.

Like I watched this in portuguese cuz that's my native language (I'm Brazilian) so the accent thing didn't get to me at all. If she was meant to be latina I'd like to have seen more references to her culture. Latinex people have so many looks that in the end all the characters from Big hero 6 could be Latino if we are talking looks. Like I could see any of them existing here in Brazil, cuz we have black, asian and white people in Brazil too. I'm mixed japanese and european for example, there are mixed japanese european women outside of Latin American countries. What differentiates me and makes me Latina isn't how I look, because somewhere out there there might be a girl that isn't Latina that looks exactly like me, and what would make me latina would be Brazilian culture.

I like this video since it touched a lot of topics I agree with. However, when we talk about representation we have to talk about the diversity of looks within a culture. It’s specifically said in the video that a latina woman can look like anyone. I am Mexican and Puerto Rican so I want to address somthing that bothers me. My family is a mix of different kinds of Latinos. Me personally, I have black native and white ancestors. I look like a common Mexican girl, my cousins look Italian, black, and even Asian. When I go to a country, let’s say Puerto Rico, I will see about 20 girls who look like a honey lemon walking around the streets. When referring to representation, we cannot restrict ourselves to just a certain kind of a Latina all Latinas are valid. I know a lot of people who are self-conscious that they are too white passing so having a character like honey lemon, being blonde haired and blue eyed is a representation in its self. It shows young girls that you can be Latina and still look white. True it’s unfair that Disney changed an Asian character to a girl that looks like Rapunzel. but this “ white washing” actually has its benefits because it’s now justifying that just because you look like a different race doesn’t mean that you are invalid in the way that you look. Representation is representation. You can’t complain about that.

Another awesome video. I am being pissed off I am latine (Nb) and this really boiled my blood. I get pissed because it made me think of an abc show called "Beauty and the bakery" the cast was very light skinned (because of course) but I knew they were latine because of how they spoke, the pastries they made, sometimes speaking Spanish, and talking about deep stuff like coming out to your parents that you are lgbt with a latine pov. Honey Lemon I adore her. I think she is sweet and very likable but I have to agree. She just seemed like a white person mainly because there's no culture. I agree with what you said about them keeping the team Japanese because we don't see that a lot in the Western region. But I wouldn't say the entire team being Japanese is by definition "diversity." in itself. Diversity would need to consist of a cast with 2 or more different races. If a movie mainly consist of one race, then it's not a diverse movie but I will say this, if they wanted to add some white characters fine but whitewashing Hero and his brother along with Honey Lemon was too much.

Here in europe we think more of different nationalities and we focus more on cultures than on physical features. For example I never had to specify my race, its not even written in our IDs. And If you are constantly asked for your race in america it leads to them seperating their own society too much. Also race is a very complicated topic. Me adding a lot of non-white people in my upcoming series as a white person: did I……go to far?

Like honestly I wish there were tan latinas in midia like yes there are tan but there more of a light tan closer to white then actual tan so I agree. Also yes to the cosplayers I follow a lot of poc cosplayer but I’m sure if I post as a Hispanic/Latina who isn’t white I won’t get a lot . Ohh I saw an amazing ladybugs chat cosplay at a con a while back I ran to them to take a picture
