A man who bullied a disabled girl tries to escape his past.
INIQUITY is used with permission from Oliver Goodrum. Learn more at goodrumfilms.com.
After a troubled past, Michael is on the brink of a fresh start in life. Years ago, he was part of a juvenile neighborhood gang that bullied a disabled girl and her desperate mother to the point of tragedy. Now as a grown man, he has the first real relationship of his life and a stable job in a town where no one knows him.
When an event commemorating the past tragedy puts his name back in the news, he must scramble to keep his past hidden and his new life safe. But the decisions and actions of his former life prove more persistent than he thought, as do the difficult emotions around it.
Directed by Oliver Goodrum from a script co-written with Alexander Craig, this raw, powerful short drama is a compelling character portrait of a man who is unable to escape the past. A former bully whose actions led to the horrific suicides of those he bullied, he has tried to forget the past and move forward with a hopeful new life. But the film asks morally complicated questions of what it means to atone for the past, and whether redemption is possible in the face of such heinous actions.
The film is a sequel to Goodrum's highly successful short THIS IS VANITY from 2012. And like its predecessor, it possesses a striking and potent set of visuals, weaving a washed-out naturalism with propulsive camerawork and haunting images. But INIQUITY works as a standalone story, with the writing structuring for uninitiated viewers a kind of puzzle that mirrors Michael's confrontation with the enormity of his past. He has a growing tenderness and trust in his first real relationship and has built an ordinary but solid life for himself. And in these scenes, he has decency and even vulnerability.
But as a remembrance vigil is planned and a journalist hoping for a follow-up to the original tragedy begins to intrude upon the carefully protected borders of Michael's new life, Michael's life begins to fray as he confronts the enormity of his past transgressions. Pressures mount, both from the increasingly invasive online media and from home, in the form of his imposing, domineering brother. We get glimmers of why Michael perhaps became a bully in his youth; we also see the glimpses of the past intruding in his dreams and waking thoughts.
Actor Richard Crehan (who played the same character in THIS IS VANITY) captures Michael's growing unraveling with an unvarnished intensity, in a compelling, remarkable performance that speaks to both the man trying to keep his hard-won life together and the boy who lashed out in violence and terror. Ultimately Michael is a man divided from himself, having sequestered his past from his present. He is suffused with regret, but in the film's explosive ending, he finds himself in a full circle of sorts -- a Mobius strip he himself began as a persecutor, only to find himself on the other side of the loop.
Gripping and thought-provoking, the ending of INIQUITY finds Michael getting a glimmer of what he wrought all those years ago in a sequence that's almost like a Greek tragedy in its pitiless symmetry. Perhaps some will see it as justice; others might frame it as genuine remorse. It will leave nearly all shaken at the end and pondering the nature of redemption and justice, and just what it means for Michael and others like him.

I love that there was a continuation of this story. I remember hating this guy so much in the first film and this delve a little bit into his back story. It seems like he was already troubled from a very young age and headed down the wrong path which escalated when he became a teenager. Now as an adult, he is finally feeling remorse for the part that he played in the mother/daughter deaths. Powerful final scene as well.

@Aunty Linda I totally agree! It is NEVER in my eyes going to be okay, justified, or explainable when the abused turns abuser! IF you become an abuser, you're just repeating that cycle of abuse. Hurt people should not hurt other people.😶

@Marcus Turdwell yeah it's bizarre the way bullies dont see their part in an interlocking system, a dynamic between multiple actors that comprise the bullying behaviors- that system being unable to even exist without those various parts (people). All it takes is one person to be liiiiike WTF, cut it out douchebags! to stop the entire dynamic long term. Those "it was all banter and fun" bullies will never admit that they were cowards.

I remember the first story as one of the most shocking of all Omeleto films. What shook me the most were the words “Based on a true story” near the end of it. As much as I feel sorry for the guy in this sequel, part of me is assuaged by the karmic elements at play here - the price one pays for past sins. But overall it’s so sad, society is so screwed up. 😟

As I recall? In reality the suicide deaths of this mother and daughter went without any remorse from those who persecuted her. I suppose this is an idealized reimagining of this tragedy. The deaths of other abused victims throughout history have never had such a reckoning either. For example, I am thinking of Junko Furuta and Sylvia Marie Likens and how their horrific deaths/murders went pretty much unpunished. There were too many perpetrators to even prosecute or find, and those who were the ring leaders received minimal sentences.

Omg 😳 I wish I hadn’t looked up the case of Junko Furuta. That made me feel physically sick! That poor poor girl. I can’t imagine anyone going through the absolute hell that she did. And somehow surviving that torture for 44 days 😱 And the sentences 4 of those pieces of scum got were some of the most pathetic ever. How did they not get life in prison with the most brutal men in the prison as cellmates? And the 96 odd men that haven’t ever been even charged... I hope there is a hell where their sins are played out on them 10 fold for all those evil, vicious, sickening things they did to her. What they did is not human! And the Yakuza should be burned to the ground too!

Your comment made me think of it from a different angle. The bullied kid in the bad crowd is powerless to attack his actual bullies but is given free rein and their support (and acceptance) to bully someone else. That's why he ended up being the worst one to the mother and her daughter because of all his anger.

Honestly the people in the neighbourhood disgust me the most. When the abuse was happening, they turned a blind eye. They didn't act when it would have really mattered. When they did, they acted just as bad, if not worse than the teenagers. Most of them are fully grown adults who should have a more mature moral compass, yet they still tormented and abused the man AND his family just like the teens did to the mother and daughter, even driving him to attempt the same fate. Really says a lot about about our society.

I’ve seen the prequel. Man, what a tragic story. Sad, tragic death of a disabled daughter and her mother. Michael committed horrible acts in his early life. He also had a bad upbringing, too. His mother’s a brat, he hung out with the wrong group of kids. The past haunted him 10 years later. He uses boxing as his way out to relieve the stress, let alone escape his past. Throughout this short film, certain events come back to haunt him (ex: the handsmothering, the fire, Michael’s childhood of crime and mischief, you name it). By the end of it, he tried committing suicide because he can’t take the pain anymore. I had a feeling his mother is responsible; so was everyone else involved as the perpetrators. Also, the police force should have been more active and responsible, not be dicks and then the chief saying “now f$**# off”. Hope this guy, Michael, has learned his important lesson, to not bully people and overdo it. Because crazy consequences can happen. Hope he’s learned right from wrong now. Poor guy. And finally, I want to end with this: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. We all make mistakes. We all should try to redeem ourselves as best as possible. Good luck to our society.

Bullying doesn't just effect the victim. It also effects the bully as well. Not only does it leave lasting effects, but harsh ones too. Harsh ones that don't really go away. The guy was having karma thrown his way, just as he was trying to change, forget the past, and all of the memories haunting him for a whole 10 years. I would say he didn't deserve the punishment of karma now, he only needed it when the time was right.

Had to go and watch the prequel and all I can say is that every community needs a scapegoat. They were all apart of it, not just him, all the neighbors that never spoke up in the moment, the police, his family, silent bystanders and now because of their collective guilt, they look for where to place absolute anger and blame, so that they, themselves are faultless. Where was this kind of angry outburst when it was actually needed, where was the community for this mum and daughter? Hindsight is such a useless super power...we can't change the past...

I had no idea they made a sequel. I came across this by chance... The prequel to this video was extremely infuriating and upsetting to watch. Every single actor was terrific... The victim-mom, bully-mom, and the cop were all completely realistic, the girl who played the disabled victim was excellent, but the best performance of all was definitely the primary bully. He was that terrorist who most of us recognize from our youth. To give a villain performance that is indistinguishable from the real thing is a true work of art. I was so angry at him I felt like I wanted to torture him... When a work of fiction makes you feel so frustrated, angry, sad and sympathetic to the point where you forget it isn't real, you have found some truly talented actors.

Reading the comments of this powerful short I feel I have missed a couple of important things. Firstly, I came to this film not knowing there was a previous film. I would have loved to have seen the first before watching this. Secondly based on the comments it seems this is based on a true story, again, something I wasn't aware of. Iniquity is a fantastic Omeleto short dealing with a troubling subject, Great acting, great production and an overall really good film.

The first part told the truth to a tea to be fair. This story is far from the truth. He actually felt no remorse at all. And only 3 months after the event went and terrorised an old lady on the same street every night by playing really loud music and throwing eggs til 3am. to the point where her health deteriorated because of sleep deprivation and her blood levels rised to the point of being hospitalised. He is still remains part of the same gang he was in when he was a youth and was recently arrested for battery

I have been waiting for this film!!! So glad you got the funding for your film. 🥰 Well Done!!! When the scene ended, the silence at the end, was very powerful. Not sure if it was intended, the silence was 10 seconds long. I wonder if the group of vigils realize when they are tormenting Michael for the bullying he did 10yrs ago, which led to Angela committing suicide with her daughter. That they are doing so without thinking about the consequence? If their actions lead to Michael killing himself, are they any better than he was? I wish they showed the others who bullied even though Michael was the main instigator. Do you think Michael's girlfriend would still stay with him when she learns what happened 10yrs ago? I think she would because he has remorse for his actions and is not the same person anymore.

A young boy pressed into criminal behavior by his older brother and friends takes their lessons to the extreme and indulges to the point that a mother and daughter go up in flames, and that event then wakes him up to the wrongness of what he'd been taught to do. This is a powerful story. The fact that his older brother, and at least one friend, continue to behave like deranged bully-boys while he struggles with his demons is a truthful backdrop to what many people who can't escape the environment that turned them bad, but they desperately want out and yet don't know how. Good job!

I tried to feel some sort of sympathy for him, knowing his own damaged childhood and how irresponsible his mother was and probably all the older people in his childhood most likely had acted even more detestable. But the thing is he never once apologized or acted in anyway actually sorry about what had happened in the first short. All the way up until the ending when the guilt and fear of everyone else judging him hit him hardest and he made an attempt at doing away with himself. But that move only further proves how cowardly he was all the way until the end, unable to accept that his actions along with several others, had a horrible outcome. The past will always come to haunt you....well done for the sequel short!!!! Nearly as powerful as the first.

I understand having a terrible childhood, but I think justice getting served to the girl is right. He deserves to get punished for what he did. Just cause he was abused doesn’t suddenly excuse his actions. He didn’t deserve to be abused, and it wasn’t his fault, but what he did to that girl was his fault, and he deserves to be punished for it. He made that choice to bully her, his abusers didn’t force him to bully her, it was his choice alone. At least that’s my take away.

@Marcus Turdwell Dead Man's Shoes? A tremendous film and an outstanding performance from Paddy Considine - pretty early on in his career too. I don't think that it gets the recognition it deserves - achieving a poor Rotten Tomatoes score, (not surprising TBH - I've got no faith in any Rotten Tomatoes scores). Of course it won't be everyone's cup of tea, but it's certainly not a bad film. Do you rate it?

I appreciate the concept, but overall the film feels like wish fulfillment. A not insignificant number of predators go on to live remorseless lives free of consequence while their victims are left to deal with trauma (if they survive that is). That our abuse will be avenged is a fantasy. I learned this lesson the hard way, though I admit it’s still fun to fantasize about karma forcing cruel people to reckon with their pasts.
