Eoin is driving to an undisclosed location, making his way with his young daughter Emma in a car across the Irish countryside. But the pair is delayed when a traffic jam stops up the road.
Eoin goes to investigate, leaving Emma in the car playing with her doll and discovers that a horse-carriage accident has stopped traffic. But when he gets back to the car, Emma has disappeared. Eoin embarks on a desperate search for his daughter, confronting the passengers in the other cars, and soon everyone is a suspect in a high-stakes race to find the young girl.
Written by Darach McGarrigle and directed by Ian Hunt-Duffy, this taut thriller generates an adrenaline rush from a stripped-down set of narrative elements, squeezing enormous tension and suspense out of a narrow scope of time and place. But it's also a compelling collective portrait of mob mentality, and how suspicion and paranoia are social contagions, passing fear from one person to another.
In a genre where control over the reveal of information is paramount and structure and timing are key, the writing is meticulous, laying down each beat of the story development with great care. Though it's short, the story deftly juggles a growing cadre of characters and information, creating a narrative house of cards. As Eoin frantically searches for Emma -- and the action builds up the central narrative question of who took the little girl -- characters shift from suspects to allies and back again with each new turn of the story. As allegiances and alliances shift, so does the audience's certainty.
The camera, editing and sound all work in concert to keep interest high, taking as much care to capture the flickers of subtle emotion in characters or seemingly throwaway lines of dialogue as it does the larger, more pulse-pounding moments. The film quickens as expected as Eoin tries frantically to find his daughter, mirroring his escalating fear. But it also knows when to slow down to create atmosphere and emotion, taking in the moment when Eoin stares at the blood and carnage of the dead horse, for instance, or a poignant moment between father and daughter before he goes to check out what's causing the traffic jam.
It also slows down as the group dynamic takes over, as the crowd gathered at the traffic stop begins to search on their own. The entire cast -- led by actor Moe Dunford as Eoin in an intense, high-wire performance -- turns in deft, specific character portraits, each playing a crucial role in building up the mystery -- and each piece will shift yet again in the film's pulse-pounding finale.
Intriguing, tightly-wound and intricately constructed, GRIDLOCK is undeniably well-made and compelling with each twist and turn, achieving a clever sleight-of-hand that will pique audiences to rewatch the film after they've reached its conclusion. The undeniably riveting storytelling demands a wider canvas for the talents of the filmmakers, having proven remarkable ability to fashion a complex mystery from a pared-down time and place -- and the recognition that tension doesn't have to be generated from spectacle, but from how people are quick to cast suspicion on those outside their bubbles and presume guilt before innocence as they chase certainty.

SPOILER AHEAD So here is what i think. Emma's dad tried to murder a person (assuming it to be Karen, Emma's mom) reasons unknown, she could be a victim OR she could even be the villain in the back story because he seems to genuinely care about his daughter and Emma seems comfortable enough with him. So he was carrying Karen in the boot and looking for someone to take care of Emma meanwhile when he gets stuck in traffic jam. Desperate to get out of there soon, he ends up leaving Emma in the car, definitely not thinking clearly. Meanwhile Emma hears the voice and scratching and decides to hide in the woods. When he realises hes about to get caught he decides to take up the offer of the other man. Luckily he finds Emma too and makes a run for it. Also, he asked Emma if she "saw" the monster, because he was worried if Emma recognised her mom.

This shows exactly how mass hysteria starts and the way people turn on one another in these situations before being reasonable half of the time. They started acting wild and pointing blame at the easy to accuse person... because he was socially awkward... and fit the bill. The monster was there the whole time... in front of everyone... blending into the crowd. And 9 times out of 10. That’s how it’ really is... This was a really awesome short. Even as the viewer, I found myself not trusting the guy with the other doll ... and the guy pointing blame at everyone... all the way until the end. The human brain.

Seems mother’s have learned that “you stay right there” just cannot be depended on! My 2 year learned how to unlocked his seatbelt, unlocked the car door, get out and was in a full trot down the street in one minute time! He is the same one who learned how to unlock the front door. The best stories are the ones you can't guess the end till the end comes and you're completely caught off guard. All the way through the film, I suspected different ones but didn't suspect the father. The couple behind him, then the guy that got angry about him attacking his car, then the guy that took off running after being hand cuffed. Then the guy that went with him into the woods, and the guy that refused to open his boot, so this one got me. I had to go back to see exactly which car Emma's mom was found in. What a good story and a twister. Great job.

After realizing his daughter was missing and “briefly” searching for her with little to no effort I was annoyed ! To me he just wasn’t looking for her hard enough but😫😫😫😫now it all makes sense. The lady at the end in the trunk ( probably her mother / Karen ) is the monster because as the child said that the monster was saying her name and in the end when the trunk is opened we hear Karen say Emma . But Emma did not know that who was in there calling her name and so she got scared and ran to the woods , I believe nobody from that crowd kidnapped her. Although the real monster is the father because he had hit her mother and was in a hurry to drop Emma at someone's place .

i was thinking it was the father from the beginning because of the trigger horse. nevertheless i wasn't totally sure until the end. because i was thinking another posibility... like the father was just imagining he had a daughter on his car and it was only his daughter's soul bothering him . and being buried nearby. just as the tell tale heart a short story by Edgar Allan Poe . however this was an original irish story we can only compare to other great american stories. congratulations for your excellent story

Really good show! Made me tear up at one point and the end was a shocker (don't worry, I won't say anymore). Some spoilers ahead, but I'll try not to give it away. Guess I'm kind of naive. After checking with other people, I would've started searching the woods right away. I thought she got upset about her parents arguing or got curious and snuck out. Then he came back right away and she was scared of getting in trouble. Also surprised how quickly everyone became suspicious. As I said, my first thought would've been to search off the road. Call out, look for footprints, look for her doll, etc.

First thought it was the fancy couple in back of him, but that seemed too obvious. But why did they keep glances at each other in that suspicious way? Then I thought the guy with other doll and moustache really did kidnap her and hide her in the woods, and then he lured the dad into the woods to knock him off, and then leave with the girl somehow...did NOT see that ending at all...although I did wonder why he got dizzy at sight of horse blood and what the connection, like did his horse get hit by a car when he was a kid or something?
