But back then it was easier to ignore. It seems the author got away from his editors because a lot of the worst parts of his writing are enhanced in the sequel. Creeping on girls, paper thin characters, the protagonist being the most specialist boy who ever was who gets all the girls with his incredible racing skill. But Takumi was more justified in how good he was so I could look past it. 4:03 I think the main reason why it doesn't work is because of the nonexistent rules regarding aerodynamics and downforce. In theory it would be insanely easy to abuse the "heavier cars get thicker tires" rule by just piling downforce on a car (naturally adding more weight) so one would get the benefits of increased aerodynamic AND mechanical grip. And with the handicaps levied on mid-engined and AWD cars as well, something like a C7 Corvette ZR1 or a Viper ACR would probably be the best option for abusing these regulations.
@r3k2mutter7910 ай бұрын
4:15 well it actually would shake out like that on an 88 km course which is about 40 ish minutes of racing, the larger more powerful cars would not even make it to the end of the race if they didn't race much "slower" than they could do at any one point. The heavier the car is, the more power you need to be able to accelerate, and the heavier and more powerful you car is the fatter your tyres need to be to be able to effectively slow down in braking, deal with lateral forces from inertia in corners and accelerate out of corners onto straights, but the catch is that tyre wear is massively exponential so adding tyres that are 25% fatter to a car which is 25% heavier will see tyres wear out much sooner under the same circumstances, adding fatter tyres to a car will increase the longevity of the tyres but not as much as it would if ur car is lighter, has less power and has skinnier tyres, thats what ryosuke wants people to figure out. At no point in the race until the kamaboko straight can any of the super heavy super powerful cars run at full speed, what goes through the mind of people who enter the race is "I need a powerful car to be able to even have a chance to set a good time with how much of the course is uphill and due to the course ending in a massive straight section, so they look for a car with lots of power, but any lightweight powerful car they look at, they cannot use because of the grip to weight rule which would force them onto very skinny tyres making it impossible to control their car without immediately burning through the tyres that cant handle that much power, so they then have to pick a car that is both powerful enough to accelerate uphill and heavy enough to give them tyres that are fat enough to use the power on the uphill, (which is why heavy and powerful but balanced European cars are so popular) but due to the cars weight they need to take it easy on the uphill so they dont ruin their rear tyres and when they go back downhill they still have to take it easy or else their weight will ruin their front tyres. In conclusion having more power means that at no point in the race till the kamaboko straight can you race at full speed, and so the key is to have less power but be lighter and have skinner tyres that will last longer throughout the race, youll be slower on the uphill but can attack it more aggressively which will save you some time back so the power difference isnt completely leaving you in the dust and then on the downhill you can make massive gains on the heavier cars that are still not going at full speed.

takumi was a highschooler who unknowingly built up a talent for racing. mf ghost protag went to a racing school and was taught by takumi. there is no under dog there aside from the underpowered gt86. even though the track in the first race took place roughly in the same area as parts of 5th stage (mainly the start area was the finish area in ryosukes race against an r32) the road is much wider. what made initial Ds races more balanced was the roads are narrower and on a downhill section it meant having 300-350hp wasn't all that much more of a big deal when against a roughly 150hp ae86. The ae86 was lightweight, had a 50/50 weight distribution and was naturally aspirated allowing it to maintain its power for longer which made it capable of keeping up with the opponents cars which despite being more powerful were also heavier meaning they would have to brake earlier, have slower acceleration (especially if waiting for turbos to lag but having a 4wd setup or a "missfiring system" reduces the impact of it a bit). mf ghosts race doesn't really have that. the closest balance between the gt86 and the other racers was the civic type r, lotus and alfa.

@clockwork34949 ай бұрын
I mean that's the thing, the AE86 was the underdog punching above it's class and climbing the ranks to take the crown. It's not a bad car by any means but the whole point was Takumi was actively learning and honing his skills even if he didn't like driving to begin with, meaning it was never about the gap between 350hp bee hive vs finely tuned 150hp 86 but rather the driver's themselves and what they were capable of. Another thing to note is that Takumi was mentored by both his father and Ryosuke in a way where most of the time he wasn't told exactly what to do, but rather some vague information to take in and formulate on his own path, they layed the groundwork while Takumi built the foundation via his skilset and knowledge. In MFG there just isn't any character development to be had, Kanata just immediately knows everything because Takumi was his mentor thus he's just perfect already. MFG would arguably be better if it took place during Kanata's schooling under Takumi's wing, but instead Shigeno skipped over that just so he could have Takumi's whereabouts be a whole mystery sort of thing until the big reveal at Kanata's final race where Takumi pops up out of no where and is actually his last opponent to beat. Unfortunately Shigeno is trying to catch lightning in a bottle twice but this time without what made Initial D so special nor the advice or assistance of Keichi Tsushiya.

In all honesty, I think the racing aspect of MF Ghost would have more emotional impact if the story was like this: The GT86 Kanata drives use to belong to his late Father, and Kanata's dad use to hate the idea that racing has turned into a way for rich, spoiled kids to show off a bunch of flashy cars and expensive equipment they have because they were born into a rich family. Before Kanata's dad died, he wanted to enter MF Ghost in his GT86 in order to prove that racing shouldn't be about how much money you have or what car you drive, but about how much you're willing to push yourself to be the fastest driver you can be. After his father died, Kanata decided to do what his dad wanted to, and entered MF Ghost in his freshly restored GT86 with the intention of not only making it into the top 15, but winning the entire championship in his father's memory. He manages to beat some of the other drivers and place decently high in the Divine Fifteen, not because he's some sort of racing god with as much plot armor as he can carry, but because he's willing to take risks and push himself to his limits, simply to prove that his father is right about what racing should be.

@ArbitraryOutcome10 ай бұрын
It's not even "more power = worse tires" (the tire thing was an issue in the 90s and Initial D since road car tires then didn't have enough grip to support the higher on average power and torque numbers of modern sports cars), it's "heavier cars get wider and thicker tires". I already pointed out how abusable this would be thanks to aerodynamics and downforce additions. Take an already balanced car in present time (and ideally weighing between 1300-1650 kg, something like a 488 or Corvette Z06) and just add downforce to it (which would usually add more weight to the car). You then get access to thicker tires than you would otherwise, while reaping the benefits of increased mechanical AND aerodynamic grip.

I feel like what mf ghost misses is that sheer amount of power difference that cars have. The cars that takumi raced against were somewhat believable because of the fact that cars in initial D had not that much power in them. Most cars were 200 to 300hp and were massively weight disadvantaged and takumi had a lot of experience on his car while his competitors did not. So even with a 70 to 100 hp disadvantage its somewhat realistic that he was able to keep up on a downhill mountain. Then there was the weight advantage that he had and the fact that suspension and tires in his car were tuned by a pro street racer. After he blew up the motor his 86 was basically a formula Atlantic car which was more or less the same as the competition. Not only it is harder to believe that someone can take a gr86 and beat cars with 400 to 600 hp its also hard to believe that he can do it against a bunch of pros because he is takumi’s student. Honestly it would have been much better if we got to know about bunta more. Or saw takumi do other disciplines. Project D kinda cop out and didn’t go legit and that was pretty bummer.

The series somehow managed to make me forget that the biggest issue with the MFG Angels was that a LITERAL 17 YEAR OLD IS A MEMBER just with how often they showed up to interrupt the action. Like I'd genuinely start getting invested in the race and then suddenly it cuts back to Ren going 'Oh noes its sooooo hard being an angel !!' and then awkward ass shot and then awkward relationship talk and then- Thats one of my biggest gripes with MF Ghost, the pacing is just absolutely horrendous. ESPECIALLY when you go in knowing theres only 12 episodes, it makes you realize just how much time is wasted on unimportant shit like the Angels Also gotta mention Beckenbauer who's entire personality so far has been 'Keisuke but he's German.... and extremely racist as well-'

The aoc in alot of American states is also 16, but you still have to be 18 to work in porn or any sort of sexual job and it's the same rules in Japan. Or at least it is now, before april 2022 you had to be 20 in Japan to do that type of stuff or 18-19 with parental permission which is insane on its own that anyone ever got that permission.

My only real hope for MF Ghost is that it's success leads to a revival of other racing anime. Like a continuation of Wangan Midnight or even an adaption of Over-Rev. But yeah as a story it's really boring, Kanata is just a carbon copy of Takumi without any of his character progress. And I get that Initial D was famous for the ae86 but it didn't mean the author had to use an 86 for the sequel series. Wangan Midnight's sequel series had it's main character drive an RX-7, for example.

@chidori7234Күн бұрын
The biggest problem with MFG so far is. well it's kinda obvious, Kanata and his plot armour. He just blitzes his way through like it's a walk in the park for him. I know Initial D also had problems with plot armour. But the difference between Takumi and Kanata was that the former actually showed STRUGGLE. Amidst his godlike driving skills, he had to deal with various challenges such as: - A steering radius handicap (gum tape death match) - Dealing with an unfamiliar mountain pass (Usui) - Being pressured into making mistakes (that one moment where Takumi fumbled his lead and overshot a corner because of the immense pressure from Ryosuke behind him) - Learning the hard way that driver's skill is ultimately not enough to keep up (I like how, in First Stage, they established this message of "it's not the car, it's driver's skill". But then in Second Stage, they subverted that with Kyoichi pragmatically showing Takumi just how underpowered his Eight-Six was by overtaking him on a flat section. That, and the engine blow, taught Takumi that "it's not purely about driver's skill, it's 50% skill/50% machine. That's the reality of motorsport. I just loved how Kyoichi was purposefully written to teach him that, specifying that it isn't a race; it's a seminar. And it just makes Takumi's comeback with his new engine upgrade more meaningful. To know defeat is to learn and grow, and to come back stronger with newfound strength) It's challenges like these that Kanata lacks which makes him ridiculously OP. I mean ffs, even the otaku power fantasy lord Kirito himself struggled at one point (the part where he nearly got killed by a Knights of Blood member until Asuna saved him). I wanna see Kanata struggle more. I wanna see him get pressured, grit his teeth, make mistakes, spin out, you name it. That would be so much more INTERESTING than just watching him blitz his way through the race. As of now, season 2 just ended. Next season, I wanna see a Kanata capable of struggle like his predecessor. It may not make MFG peak cinema instantly, but it would be more interesting to watch than just seeing him go about the race like it's a walk in the park There are also a lot of other problems with MFG, like, well, Ren having no real personality other than being obsessed with Kanata and the egregious MFG angel fanservice, but imo, it's Kanata's lack of any real struggle that's the biggest issue.

Finally. The algorithm caught onto my thoughts about this show. This show felt like an attempt to use nostalgia from Initial D and not a show about Kanata Katagiri or anyone in the show for that matter. In my opinion, the closest this show got to being what it aimed for was the death zone sequence during the race. There was some hype and mystery for his first overtake, but after it lost that mystery and became uninteresting. It can be good, but it would require EXTREMELY heavy reworking of kanata, the side stories, and overall direction.
@ieurobeatkids937810 ай бұрын
It's not the side stories that need to be reworked. It's the whole plot and the characters. The main plot is Kanata finding his dad and falling in love with a girl on the way. The racing doesn't progress the plot. It's there to keep the ID fans entertained. Find some way to weave them into eachother and the plot will be a bit better. Next, a more natural romance. Have Kanata not like japan at first, and Ren feel offput by a fucking grown man suddenly living in her house. Ren falls immediately and becomes a Kanata simp just because he's a "nice guy". Kanata is a grown man but he is also only 19 so their relationship as a concept isn't a problem

I got a better idea. How about having REN be the lead and the struggle being that she fears for his life as he is racing due to it being a highly dangerous sport, but eventually finding the same love of the sport he has?! Basically one pound Gospel with sports cars! You get over the natural danger of the sport, show that Kanata actually has a love for what he does and explain WHY (Have his dad be an actual racer...) and give Ren something other than being fan service and actually put a purpose on that relationship.

Honestly I don't get why people like MF Ghost. The entire concept behind it is BEYOND stupid, it's actually counterproductive to what it supposed to be. Then there's the damned plot... Fuck me sideways, it's so stupid. I swear MF Ghost falls apart the moment someone engages their brain.

Hard agree.... Also, as someone who has actually BUILT cars and bikes, MFG isn't even that much more realistic than ID, and it's also way less realistic in other ways XD MFG so was SO bland and disappointing "Death Zones", brightly lit super-wide roads, boring cars using a fraction of the road, boring characters (especially whatever the MC's name was, I honestly cannot remember), no unrealistic but super-hype drifting, no drama nor tension (having millions of viewers doesn't make it more exciting than people hanging out on the course), everyone constantly vomiting out exposition rather than letting the story naturally build, the GT86 being an actually solid car that- when modded- could actually hang with euro sports cars as opposed to the AE-86 legit being an absolute POS chassis that Takumi wheels the shit out of against objectively FAR superior cars even if they were similar in cost.... OML I could go on Subbed for the Redline love alone lol, best anime movie ever, idc if I still have no idea what the story was lmao

I can only count a handful of moments from this show that I liked (maybe fewer). Meanwhile, I can make an entire 70 + video playlist of moments from Initial D that I loved. For me, this is the most 4-5/10 show I've seen thus far. Also Jungle Fire featuring MOTSU is a great OP wasted on this show.

9:38 - I don't entirely have an issue with using real life scenes (or based off real esque camera work). If done correctly, it gives the anime enough connection to go on real life anime pilgrimages, additional merch sales, and likely some tourism collab. Also it can let the audience (especially Japanese) better connect with the setting (and imagine being in that anime world). The Initial D example would be weebs going to Mt Haura (Mt Akina) to recreate some shots of the start line, hairpin curves and the such..... Bocchi the rock was also pretty intentional with realistic shots, and did an overall good job in connecting fans and giving its places some character & charm. Ofc MF Ghost is trying for the reasons above, but just doesn't do it right. Being set in the future, I don't have a connection with these places. Also the roads & places are too bland and unmemorable. Comparatively, Akina & Usui pass had their unique features, challenging corners that allow for an interesting & high stakes race. Its why I will visit Initial D's Mt Akina, but not the MFG courses (even though I've inadvertently been there a few times).

Yeah, I agree with almost everything in this video. The charcters are written really shittly and it doesn't seem like it's gonna get better, the pacing is all over the place, the story is cliche and boring. Yet, somehow I can't really bring myself to hate it. You mention that the only good scenes are the ones referencing Initial D, and I disagree. The twin overtake, the scene where he loses all time saved up by great driving on a straight road, the ultra super late breaking shit were all really cool and made kinda feel like Initial D did. Most of the issues with the anime are just the issues with the manga and it makes me real damn sad knowing that it won't get better.

Oh I don't think the only good scenes are the ones referencing initial d. I was saying that the fan base at large feels that way. Because that's the most popular scene from the series. Those scenes you mentioned could be great if they mattered at all but they really don't. I should have dedicated some time to this but the qualification time trial laps are actually more important than the races themselves. Those are what determines if you get to actually race and win prize money. So nothing that happens during the races actually matter. He could have gotten dead last. As long as he qualifies in the next time trial, he's in. Which again even that issue could have been solved by just making Kanata care about his placement.

Yeap, fair enough.

I went back to check if the camerawork was really that bad, since I remembered quite the contrary, and for the scenes where something actually happens, it's good and dynamic. Also forgot to mention that the voice acting is really good, suprisingly.

Not initial D Season 1 level, of course, but still. I think it makes it a little easier to follow the action.
@GhoulCityOnline10 ай бұрын
So you're right, it's good enough when something happens, the trouble is, since races are spread out across 5+ episodes instead of 2 or less, you get like 1 moment of action per episode and then like 15 minutes of nothing really. Whereas in initial d they're much quicker paced so you'd get like a dozen back to back exciting moments
@Deadsphere4 ай бұрын
I still personally think a true blue sequel to Initial D should have focused on Takumi starting his career in professional rally racing for the Toyota works team, or Keisuke starting his circuit racing career. Either one of those would have been far better than what we got, since it would have covered: -Both characters having to pretty much relearn driving the car, since they would handle so drastically different from the AE86/RX-7 they were used to before -Overcoming their behaviors as a street racer to fine tune themselves to be a rally/circuit racer -Not winning every race from the get go because they're already established racing pros MFG had the potential to be something good, and instead Shingeno pretty much gave us a pair of rose-tinted glasses.

Oh boy I can't wait for this comment section to be filled with meaningful and respectful discussions. Nah but fr, I feel like you brought up a lot of the grievances I and others have with the show, and I only hope that people will think a bit differently about it. I do kinda wish that you brought up the fact that Overtake! (a far superior racing show in my opinion) was airing at the same time as MF Ghost and essentially demonstrated what MFG could've been like. (I.e. a far wider variety of camera angles/motion, a compelling story and cast of characters, just overall better art direction, etc. Just minus the eurobeat and slightly less good-looking cars). But eh, it's whatever.

Tbh I'm so glad that you're here to have all the correct opinions about Initial D, and actually care about the artistic merits of the series beyond "car fast wow" (I too wish Initial D ended in 2001). It's very refreshing to see.

Not gonna lie, this video actually made me want to read Initial D. I have the omnibus, I just never got around to reading it till now. I just thought the series was boring, never really realising that a lot of my favourite racing media is directly inspired by it (Grid 08 still GOATed). So, thanks. It also highlights how kinda nostalgia-blind some people are. Like, if this wasn't related to Initial D, I think people would be far less favourable towards MFG. I was certainly thinking it was mid at the time. The glasses are just so rose-tinted that it's just red opaque glass.

When I finished this video in my living room I thought to myself that it was about time I get back to work so I got up, went in my garage and immediately before me was my modified 90's japanese sport car on jackstands patiently waiting for me to get back wrenching. And just then it hit me how much Initial D had impacted my life. I knew it already of course but it just HIT ME. Anyway I really tried to get into MFG when the manga came out but just found it so boring I dropped it. When the anime was announced I thought "great! The music and camera work will finally make those race scenes interesting, maybe then it'll make feel something" then I saw the first trailer and knew right then and there that I wasn't gonna bother And the funny part is while some think that it's more grounded MFG is actually LESS realistic than Initial D.... Such a shame that what we got was so devoid of passion
