As someone who watched initial D but was riding motorcycles as my daily, this series definitely has a very close to home approach about the racing and riding aspect, you do see a lot of people unfortunately pass away trying to be the fastest and it really made ya think twice before putting on that helmet, i now drive a miata and do occasionally drive at midnight but that lingering feeling of death being near never goes away which is what i think initial D should've focused on more in some parts of the show. At the end of the day on the open road it dosen't matter what vehicle you running or how skilled you are, you still a bag of flesh and bone at the mercy of whatever the road may throw at you, in that regard this motorcycling anime/manga definitely has a lot of potential if it was ever to be made in the modern age, i feel more racing need to highlight the fact its a dangerous sport to partake in at any level and they are consequences. I'd definitely love to see a modern version with maybe Yamaha R6s going up against Honda CBR600RRs or even a Fireblade vs a Ducati Paniagalli. You're video essays are very good, keep it up man👍🏾

I agree with the last bit. As a teen I got super lucky so many more times than I should have with my cars, and now it’s kind of the same with bikes since I ride a bit spirited, which I think it’s important for even an anime about them to show deaths and such, it happens and can even be your closest people.

Great video all around, as someone currently still afflicted with Initial D brainrot its nice to see essay content around it and some of Shigeno's other works ( of course not to say that your other videos aren't fun to watch either lol ! ) On the subject of whether or not having an impactful character death in Initial D would've possibly dissuaded some from going out and unfortunately losing their life while tryna be like Takumi, its definitely a hard question to answer. In some respects, I think back to the old days of NASCAR racing before 2001, where even with many horrifying deaths occuring while even racing in a professional setting....many still strapped themselves in and did it anyways even KNOWING the risks at hand. I do agree that yes, such a scene probably would've been more than enough to dissuade someone from throwing their car at high speeds around public roads, but also I believe that some would....still do it anyways depsite knowing the risks. Again however, its a nuanced subject that would definitely require someone more knowledgeable on this sorta thing than....me, some guy commenting on a video about Bari Bari Densetsu lol On a lighter note, though, great work as always dude. Can't wait to see what youre cooking up next!

Bari Bari Densetsu is kick ass! Why didn't it get as popular? Well, because it came out in the 80's! It's target audience may have read the manga, but they were most likely big on motorcycles, so most of them wouldn't be caught dead watching the anime (the whole otaku thing wasn't cool in some cliques, but everybody read manga, especially manga that were associated with your personal interests). It's anime was also released as an OVA, which was a pretty new distribution method at this point. By the time Initial D came along there was a lot more overlap, Not just in regards to who watched anime (as there was less stigma associated with it at that point) but also it's general availability and quality, and let's face it, Initial D was a great series. There was a lot of localization by then as well, and because the import car scene was huge when it came out, it also blew up in other countries outside japan, and helped make drifting go international (although it wasn't the only thing for sure). If they gave it a chance and localized it, especially now, I'm sure Bari Bari would do just as well, and it'd probably get more of the current generation on motorcycles too.
@JinushiProjectsАй бұрын
there was a story i heard that in japan, do to the influences of street racing stories that the government for a time actually placed a ban on the material home market release and it worsened to such an extent that even producing the content was an offence ,as such some of the content and even life action scenes had to be produced under false pretenses with completely different stories for those scenes just to get thru censorship and then post censorship control the content would be dissected and recreated

I feel like your commentary is spot on from an American (I'm assuming you are American) point of view. I've been watching anime since the mid-80's before dubs and subs (renting import Japanese VHS tapes (movies, OVAs and TV episodes) and not knowing a godamn thing they were talking about but loving the ever living shit out of them) so anyways I really appreciate your candor on these sometime difficult subjects I agree with you on the SA shit but Japan is a different world when it comes to this stuff not like the rest of the world still trying to figure it out quite honestly. Anyways, love that you did an investigative deep dive on this manga/anime and even included the soundtracks you love this shit like I do (you say "arigatou" like WE say "arigatou). Accident was a diabetic large man on his s1000 motorcycle cutting his apex deep on a single lane road and collided with me... could've been worse, broken bones and bruises but we're both back riding. I was intrigued by motorcycles but did not get into it until decades of being a car head seeking for the most analog connected experience. I still have cars and bikes but the motorcycle is probably the ultimate analog everything manual experience. Currently ride a cb650r (very balanced bike) and a honda monkey to troll around. Also the OP song hits so hard for me, I put it into a few playlist that I use for driving/riding especially for sunset runs

This was a pretty interesting review, I didn’t really know much this particular manga, all I literally knew is that it was in someways a predecessor to Initial D, that it was about motorcycle racing, and that there was that minor reference in Third Stage with that guy in the motorcycle that you showed in your video (or at least, I interpreted that as being a reference). I would imagine with the advent of AI, all these videos that you see of translations from one language to another I could imagine that at some point of future we could just get the video run it through a AI app and then it’ll spit out either a English dub or subtitle version. I think the reason that Initial D took off also had a little to do with the first Fast and Furious movie (think that came out in 2001) and that it kind of exploded from there. If I recall correctly, that’s when Tokyo Pop picked up the license and then there was a release of the arcade game, and things went on from there.
@GhoulCityOnline9 ай бұрын
Ai sucks so id rather have real people voice act it. But yeah I'd some actually never thought of Fast and the Furious having some sway or impact on initial D's initial popularity or the decision to localize it over something else. I've done a lot of fast and furious videos too and seriously never considered the possibility.
@thebozzIDW9 ай бұрын
@@GhoulCityOnline True, but it is better than nothing, at least I'd like to see it down with manga. When the original Fast and Furious (2001) came out it was around the time Second Stage was airing, I am not sure if I have my dates off but I do know that Tokoypop announced they licensed the anime and manga in 2002. I do want to ask, what's with the way you pronounce Shigeno? I thought it was pronounced SHE-GEN-OH, or is it that the way to pronounce it, sort of like how I've been calling Asus as EH-SES when it is apparently supposed to be EY-ZEUS.
@GhoulCityOnline9 ай бұрын
Idk its just how it looks like it should be pronounced to me. I'm not gonna do that thing so many youtubers do where they pretend that's it's too hard to even try to pronounce or the other thing where they do a Japanese accent voice anytime Japanese words or names come up. I think both are cringe. Everyone pronounces everything incorrectly, it's accents. Plus i think everyone is well aware I don't speak Japanese and I don't expect Japanese people to be really pissed off with me "butchering the language" when I would never be mad at them for how they speak English.

I recommend checking it out.
@dimitriyakovic1522Ай бұрын
About the last part, I feel like in a way motorcycles are different to cars in that if you fuck up, it's your body on the ground contacting pavement. We wear gear, but at a certain speed, it doesn't matter, you are there and gone in a heartbeat (hopefully). It's like the videos you see of people hitting top speed on a 1000 where they are wearing a tank top, shorts, no gloves and a helmet. You know very well at that speed, you could wear anything you want, it won't help. That is the difference really, in a car, you crash, maybe you still have a chance. On a bike that margin of chance where you live is razor thin. In a car maybe a guardrail will redirect your car and make the accident just that bit more survivable, but on a bike, that guardrail splits you in half. I'd agree with that difference making the narrative of a story, cause it is reality, and it was even more so reality back in the 80's with the lack of regard for safety in racing. I am only guessing as to the reason they made this decision, but I guess I just mean with racing bikes death is and should be the elephant in the room, cause shit gets dark real fast, and it's an undertone to every soaring high. Austrian MotoGP 2020 is one that comes to mind as I write this. Razor thin.

I've also stomached Bakuon!!; I enjoyed it but it's too gratuitously ecchi to take it seriously. Let us know if you recommend anything else of a similar genre! SPOILER WARNING: -- I was initially annoyed at the OVA ending but now in retrospect I believe it was necessary to portray the harsh reality of the sport. I ride daily on my motorcycle and tell myself every time before setting off to keep extra safe. My father who also rides (and raced professionally) was in traction for 6 months and on crutches for another, and virtually every single rider has known/known of someone who has died in a bike crash - it's just too common. I see many others on here feel the same.

Bar (ee), Shu (ee) ch(ee), M(ee) Yuk(ee), etc. If you are curious, most Americans pronounce Nikon incorrectly too. It is not Nikon as in Nike but Nikon as in knee. 3. In 1674 Virginia made street racing of the equestrian kind illegal because people were being run over. Stupid has been with us a long time. I street raced as a teen and had some very close calls. Reflecting on it, I am not sure anything would have convinced me not to do it, despite knowing how stupid it is as an adult. Providing inexpensive alternatives like karting or minimoto racing might have been the best way to keep me from racing on the street. I have thought about how I would prevent my children from racing and I do not have a good answer.

NGL touge racing is one of the safer ways to race for "free" (still gotta buy gas and tires but at least you're not endangering others unless your concentration goes down the toilet) and considering that it costs $135 an hour to race at the nearest circuit, which is 2 and a half hours away, it makes sense. Problem is, touge on a motorcycle, just like any other kind of race on a motorcycle, is taking your life in your hands, cause unlike in a car where you have a cheapo ebay roll cage and "Tanaka" 4-point harnesses, all that is between you and a traumatic brain injury is a $50 helmet and how hard you can hold on. Race touge if you want, cause if you ain't got the money to circuit race then it's the next best thing if you wanna graduate from parking-lot autocross and/or Gymkhana which are basically the same thing to something with actual speed, but be aware that Squid Activities carry a high risk of it suddenly being Someone Else's Problem.

Regarding safety in Initial D, I always felt like the series went out of its way to promote as much safety as possible. You always see every racer put their seatbelts on before the race, and they go into a lot of detail into what steps their taking to block incoming traffic, how they practice safely, etc. Heck, you could argue the appeal of the series is that anyone can go fast on a highway, but handling a race car in a narrow pass or on a circuit takes actual skill. I know when my dumbass and my equally dumb friends were trying to copy Initial D, taking those few small safety measures and staying away from highway racing as much as possible probably kept us alive. Now WANGAN MIDNIGHT on the other hand, I dunno wtf is going on there. I saw one clip where buddy spends like a million dollars tuning a ferrari, loses his race, crashes WITH A PASSENGER INSIDE on a busy public highway, and then laughs about it. You don't even lose a race crashing into traffic in the video games, it just slows you down. Plus isn't the main story about a Fairlady Z that gets its drivers killed or some shit? I dunno but whoever wrote Wangan Midnight has some real mental problems.
@GhoulCityOnline Жыл бұрын
Maybe in the Manga they do, or I'm just not really remembering but I don't recall the series putting much emphasis on safety for the most part. Not explicitly anyway, like I don't recall much going into detail about it. I know during the races they have people posted up to watch for traffic but there are scenes in first stage where there is oncoming traffic and they just keep going, so they aren't always blocking off the roads. Plus they don't have lookouts when they're just practicing, which you would have to practice to gain the skills necessary to handle a car in narrow passes which is where amateurs fuck up and die. And yeah Wangan midnight, from the maybe half of the series I've seen, just seems so weird. Highway racing looks like the most fucked thing ever.
@damian_cross Жыл бұрын
@@GhoulCityOnline Yeah to clarify the practice thing, they mention that Ryosuke doesn't drive as fast as he can in practice since its unsafe, and I think in 4th stage he tells Takumi that Kyoichi Sudo from Emperor pretty much won't pass unless he thinks its safe to do so.
@WhiteCommet6663 ай бұрын
kinda ironic to say they promote safety when they literally do illegal street racing, you never know what can happen in the next corner and also staying away from a highway won’t keep you safe when you’re driving 80-160 kmh on narrow touge roads one mistake and you fell off the cliff.Z gets people killed because they don’t have skills to control a powerful machine and get themselves killed and because of that it shows dangers of irl street racing but you think by showing this the author has mental problems 🤦♂️ .

No one is gonna talk about future formula GPX?, I believe this is the older brother of Initial D
@GhoulCityOnline Жыл бұрын
Well bari bari is older than future formula and bari bari is made by the same author as initial D so I think im gonna have to disagree with you on future formula being initial Ds true older brother.
