Oradea (Hungarian: Nagyvárad, German: Großwardein, Slovak: Veľký Varadín, Latin: Magnovaradinum) is the capital city of Bihor County, Crişana, Romania. It is located in western Romania, on the Crişul Repede River, in close proximity to the border with Hungary.
At the same time, Oradea is also the most important city in the historical region of Crişana. According to the 2002 census, the municipality had 206,614 inhabitants. [3] The metropolitan area, which also includes 11 neighboring communes, had, in 2002, a population of 249,746 inhabitants, of which 68.2% were Romanians, 28.7% Hungarians, etc.[4] In the interwar period, 20.6% of the city's population was made up of Jews, including communities of Germans, Slovaks, Ukrainians, etc. [5] (see Bihor County interwar).
The spa resorts Băile Felix and Băile 1 Mai are located at a distance of 8 km and 4 km respectively from the city. In addition to the thermal waters internationally recognized for the therapeutic effects, in this area there is a spectacular karst formation, more precisely, an aven with a depth of 86 meters, called in the area "The Crater of Betfia", as well as the Peța Stream, with a tropical vegetation unique in Europe. For centuries, Oradea has been an important reference point for the area, being the most important cultural and commercial center. In the Middle Ages, in the City of Oradea there was an astronomical observatory, and the astronomers who worked there used the meridian of Oradea as a meridian of 0°. [7]
Tourism in Oradea is beginning to develop, Oradea participating, together with Băile Felix, at the Vienna Tourism Fair in January 2015.
