A friend and coworker of my mom’s rescued an abandoned kit from her mom’s barn. He lived with her for several years and had run of the house. She lived in a turn of the century house with a 3-season porch that had French doors. It was converted into his special lair. She put in a good sized tree limb that he loved climbing and that was where he ate because he was messy. One of his favorite things was an oatmeal based concoction she made with fruit mixed in. I forget what she’d originally named him, but since he would so noisily enjoy that oatmeal, she changed his name to his happy noise, Wuffle. The name actually suited him perfectly. Overall, he was a pretty good boy. He and the cat had an understanding that the cat was the one in charge. At least that was the cat’s understanding. He did have his naughty side though. One Friday afternoon, I’d asked Jane if I could be at her house until the school function that was happening started. Jane lived across the street from my (private) high school and we lived clear across town. She said she’d be getting ready for a date, but it was fine. While she showered and changed, I did my homework in her living room. Suddenly I heard, “Wuffle! Come back here!” and a raccoon streak ran through the living room dragging a pair of pantyhose. Wuffle had gotten on the bed where Janes’s clothes were laid out, figured out how to open the egg (if you’re old enough, you’ll understand) and had stolen the pantyhose as his prize. We managed to catch him and retrieve the pantyhose, but he pouted mightily. She later told my mom that she’d taken to buying really cheap pantyhose from Kresge’s and would put them in the eggs. Wuffle thought he’d won because he got to “steal” his mom’s pantyhose, and Jane was able to keep her good pantyhose from him and wear them. I think he lived to about 15.

They are! Years ago, some friends of ours who lived in the mountains had a whole family of them who would visit every night. They had a huge redwood deck that hung out over a ravine. The raccoons would come up on the deck and knock on the sliding glass doors. Our friends would take them plates of raw veggies, hard boiled eggs, canned tuna and bowls of water. They would wash everything before eating. Momma would peel the eggs and hand them out to the kits to eat. After they ate, toys would be brought out and the kits would play and roll around on the deck. Momma and two of the older raccoons would crawl up on our friends' laps for cuddles while the young'uns played. Better than TV any day! :-)
