Injured Bat Tries Fighting Off Angry Bird

Watch this incredibly unique sighting of a grey-headed bushshrike attacking a fruit bat that fell to the ground!
A fruit bat found itself in a less than ideal situation on the floor when an opportunistic and aggressive bushshrike tried to make a meal out of it.
This unique sighting was captured by 38-year-old, Wildlife Filmmaker, Brent Leo-Smith, while sitting in their garden in Pridelands Conservancy, Balule Game Reserve, Greater Kruger.
This is also not the first time we’ve seen an interesting interaction between a grey-headed bushshrike and another obscure creature.
Brent tells LatestSightings.com the story: “The Painteddog TV team heard bird alarm calls in the garden so we went to see what the commotion was about. A fruit bat had flown down onto the floor and a very ambitious bushshrike spent a few minutes attacking and pecking at the fruit bat.”
“The fruit bat was not in an ideal position as they struggle to take flight from the ground but with a little determination, the shaky fruit bat was able to escape and fly back into the safety of tree. By hanging upside down, they are able to easily launch themselves into flight if they need to escape.”

Brilliantly captured! The Grey Headed Shrike is of course very carnivorous. We once watched a well sized male finish a lizard just about its own length!

Interestingly, in 2009, great tits were reported killing, and eating the brains of roosting pipistrelle bats. That was the first time a songbird has been recorded preying on bats. The tits only do this during winter when the bats are hibernating and other food is scarce

Fruit bats are too large and heavy to take off from a flat surface easily, they need to climb up something. Many years ago when I had an opportunity to assist with a study on bats, after capturing and measuring them, we could release the insect-eating bats (microbats) by letting them take off from our palms but for the fruitbats (megabats) we had to hang them up on our campsite laundry washing line. I have a photo of a bunch of fruitbats hanging up next to my boxer shorts...

I mean.... 'battle it out' is definitely one way to put it. Something like 'Bird Beats Up Bat' might be more accurate, though. The shrike had every advantage, to kind of a shocking extent. I never realized bats were quite that helpless on the ground.

Wouldn't you be shaking if you just got mauled by a bunch of birds? That's why he is in such a state. Side note: Looks like the bird did some damage to the eyes. Very sensitive part of the body. You can have your whole upper body in pain from an eye injury. It's an animal, I know, but can still experience pain, though probably not like a human due to their primative nervous system.

mammals have as much nerves as we do, they just don't have the ability to express it like we do, we're able to communicate to eachother about out pain while they are unable to in order to avoid catching attention of predators, they wouldn't last in the wild if they started crying in pain because they're eyes are sore, sometimes it's better to not express pain when in the face of danger doesn't mean they don't feel it like we do.

Birds are really cruel when they feed. A lion kills its victim before eating but, birds peck bits off them while they slowly bleed out. Its really sick if you see birds eating prey !!!

No the same with a lot of animals including lions. Sometimes lions eat testicles first while the animal is still alive. You can see videos of that right here on youtube. A lot of animals are very cruel to each other on a daily basis
