13:30 there is a simple reason why tattoos dont achieve prices as "fine" art does: it's not tradeable! If you buy a famous painting it might be worth more some day and will be around even longer than the owner. a tattoo basically dies with it's owner and deteriarates over time. When art sells for those prices, it's mostly at art house auctions, when the artist has no longer anything to do with it. At that point it's really only a matter of status, getting the famous artist painting, or it may be that it's a relevant historical piece. Tattoo artists are more like craftsmen anyway. There's self-expression there, but they're not really writing philosophical dissertations and manifestos and changing the cultural zeitgeist with brainy socio-political pieces and reinventing mediums. They're mostly just being commissioned to ink cool stuff (Not that there's anything wrong with that, I'm an artist too but that's also what I do, "cool looking stuff"). So it's not gonna be any time soon that you get a tattoo equivalent of a Damien Hirst, plagiarizing hack or not. And you can't really re-sell a tattoo. So yeah I'd say don't worry about that.

From the economics point of view, it seems that he was referring to information asymmetry. When buyers don't know all prices individual sellers charge, they can't make a fully rational informed decision and end up paying more than they could have paid otherwise. I just got my second tattoo yesterday. It’s MUCH bigger than my first and I’d been booked in for months for it. The artist was amazing. We laid the stencil several times until we got it right, she was patient and kind, she talked with me through it and checked if I was okay. It was an amazing experience compared to my first tattoo. So in the end I absolutely tipped her greatly. I was so happy with my piece I almost cried. She earned every bit of that tip and probably more tbh.

I feel like it is unfair to say "don't shop for an artist by price". Of course, talent comes first, but price is still an important factor. I'm not going to pay an artist 1500/hour just because of status and talent when I can find an artist just as good who doesn't charge a ridiculous amount (like many over-confident tattoo artists do e.g. bang bang artists). While their talent can be AMAZING, the price still matters. I'm not saying $100 for an entire back piece, as that is unrealistic, but I've seen artists who charge 500+ for micro tattoos that won't even last more than 2 years.

For tipping (keep in mind this is an Australian perspective so it may be different in other countries), because tattoo artists pick their prices so I generally won't tip because I expect the artist to charge me appropriately. I'll sometimes bring in a present (e.g. cupcakes) but when it comes to money unless I feel like I've sat poorly and they've overcome that really well, I'm expecting them to charge me right so I dont need to tip.
