Why do tattoo artist always say don’t ask price first . Uhm I wanna know how much I need before I go get something I don’t have enough for .
@nimbzclowd6 жыл бұрын
They mean out the gate. After a consult and you and your artist work out a solid design. I believe price can be discussed. If they have a problem with it they are pretentious. Yeah "art" shouldn't have a price but no tattoo artist this channel features would go beyond their means so don't get too discouraged about asking
@elliottselman67466 жыл бұрын
Normally, I'd agree. Once the piece has been drawn up, you should be able to get a rough idea, give or take $100. But for a sleeve? There's no way to accurately give an estimate. I'm about 90% done a half sleeve, and each of the pieces were close, but off slightly. Over the course of a whole sleeve, Im sure it'd change a lot
@Futu066 жыл бұрын
Because it's not something you ask as the first thing, because a) it's literally impossible to say before discussing the design and the size and b) it comes off super disrespectful, because it says you only care about the price, not the actual work. AFTER you have discussed what you would like with the artist, discuss the design and placement a bit, then of course you can ask (respectfully) how much do they think it could cost you, because that is something you need to know eventually. And it's also fine to say "oh, sorry, that's a bit more expensive than I thought, I don't have enough right now" and most artists are very understanding if you want to postpone getting the tattoo.
@jdl68816 жыл бұрын
Pashe Yvonne most will say how much they charge hourly and go from there. Ive had some that said hey that will be a four hour tattoo abd it ends up being six thats not my fault and hell not even theres just shit happens and itll take longer if the artist is a troll he will say oh it took loner than i thought here pay me 650 for it when i only brought 450 in cash but if he is a genuine person hed understand that charging me for those extra hours is kind of shallow knowing we had a confirmed price. Even then i still always bring in more then what the tattoo is anyway atleast by like 150 over
@andrewmcgaughey9316 жыл бұрын

But if I want a sleeve, of course I'm going to ask for an estimated price. Not a fixated one, but I just want to know if I'm going to be 1k shorter, or 5k. That's a huuge difference.

If you come in for a consult and work out a solid design with your tattoo artist first. Price can be discussed ofc. I don't think you have to pay everything at once either. Just in segments.
@HanaOccasionally6 жыл бұрын
Mizu O. I think they are talking about people who are looking for a fixed price. Plus depending if you want more large medium or small tattoos and what you want to fill in space in between and how they blend together is a huge long process that should be talked in length and price should not be the main or first question asked.
@kian_simone6 жыл бұрын
I think they mean don't just come in and ask how much is a sleeve lol. Cause its varies depending on what you want to get. Once they know what you want, then they can give you a better idea about price.
@elliottselman67466 жыл бұрын
Most artists have an hourly rate. Once you start getting pieces of the sleeve done, you'll get an idea of the total cost. Its impossible to figure out how long it'll take until you get going. I had a piece done that we figured 4 hours, and it was closer to 6. Its about 45% of my forearm. So if it fluctuates that much for the whole arm, that could be like a difference of almost 6 hours for the whole job. That's a huge difference.
@Futu066 жыл бұрын
They literally only mean that it is IMPOSSIBLE to estimate a sleeve before you have the design in place. That's not just for a sleeve - that goes for any tattoo. But sadly there are a lot of people who don't really care what they get, and will ask up front "how much you do tattoos for?", when it's a) not possible to say until you've got the design, size and placement down and even then it's a ballpark number at best, and b) that's just disrespectful if the first and only thing you even care about it is the price.

My only issue with the price thing is if I go to an artist wanting a tattoo.. and they take the time to draw something up, we figure out placement and color.. it feels like I’m wasting their* time if they say it’ll be 1000$ but I only have let’s say, 800$. Especially for people who have to take time and save. I would never haggle for less but I hate feeling like I’m wasting the artists time by going through the entire process but realizing it’s more than I have. Then again it’s hard knowing how much to save, how much wiggle room to account for and then tipping on top of that. It’s a whole thing and it always has made me anxious lol..

I may not be a tattoo artist but I am a personal trainer. People come to me for my services as well & I don't understand the whole not asking for price thing. It would be awkward to finish training someone then tell them a price they couldn't afford. Imagine you're at a clothes store and see some jeans you like without a price tag and the cashier goes "it's either you want it or not." Then the jeans end up being $2,716.
@Futu066 жыл бұрын
They mean not asking about it up front. A tattoo is not a ready-made pair of jeans. It's more like very specific jeans you want designed for you. You can't estimate a price of a tattoo before discussing the size, placement and design. At best they can tell you their hourly rate, but that's going to be worth diddly-squat, because if they don't know what you want to get done, they can't tell you how long it might take. AFTER you've discussed the design and everything, of course it's fine to ask how long it might take and how much it might cost you, because you need to know if you can afford it. But even then, you need to keep in mind it's a ballpark guess at best, especially for multiple-session projects like a sleeve - how long it takes not only depends on the level of detail of the design and the size, but also how well you sit during the tattoo, how much you bleed, etc. For example, if you have a low pain tolerance or unintentionally move around a lot, that's going to slow it down. If you're someone who naturally bleeds more, that might make it more difficult for the artist to see what's going on, so that might slow it down. So you're never going to get a fixed price on something like that, even less so if that's the first thing you ask with no context.
@mandydenise22196 жыл бұрын
Squishy Muffin they dont say that it is always going to be a surprise. But it is so strange to ask a price without even talking about the tattoo, the size the design etc etc. affffter you can ask about an estimate
@aaronbuchholz41846 жыл бұрын
It’s when people are really vague. How much for a wolf tattoo? Ok where? How big? What style/color? How much for a sleeve? Ok well a sleeve with all realism is gonna cost like 300% more then just an all tribal all black design. When your very specific and when you and your tattooist/tattoo artist decide something very specific they’ll give you a very close estimate. But you’ll want to be flexible because if you set a price they’re likey to play it safe with that price they might rush it might take longer then expected then it’ll go over their price range. They may make it smaller or add less detail for the same reason. Just plan on spending allot if you have $700 to your name don’t expect a sleeve in one visit or it’ll look like shit. I’d have at least a half a G to spend to get a single tattoo the size of soft ball. At LEAST G for a half sleeve of something simple. But that all depends on the artists skill, experience and simply what they choose to charge. It’d be like me going to where you work and saying how much would it cost to get me down to 25% body fat. Wouldn’t you want to know how hard I work? How many hours in a week I’m willing to put in. What my current body fat is? What kind of diet changes I’m willing to do. Even with that knowledge would you be able to give me a realistic estimate? Bleeding and how you sit for that tattoo would be like me going on a binge one day. You just don’t know how it’s all going to play out. Sorry that was long. I wanted to describe it well and genuinely. Have a great day!
@aurora54816 жыл бұрын
You know beforehand how many hours you'll spend with your client, so you can give a fixed price. It's closer to someone sending an email to you and asking how much is it for them to get fit. No details on what they consider "fit", no information on their past or present health, not even a picture of how they look now, they just want to know how much does it cost to get fit. While you might have ideas already that work for a lot of people to get started, tattoo artists don't even have that luxury.
@Criesofriddim5 жыл бұрын
I don’t think it’s asking the price exactly it’s more so trying to bargain the price I mean that would piss me off. If I was an artist and you wanted a price after I see what you want cool but if you try to low ball the price that’s not cool.
@MichelleOL6 жыл бұрын

Everyone upset about pricing- usually your tattoo artist will ask “what’s your price cap?” And you two go from there. I got a really beautiful arm piece that I was at the most willing to pay 350 for, and my tattoo artist rendered the drawing and sizing accordingly and it turned out being around 200 once all was said and done. Also- your tattoo artist might also gauge pricing on how much they like you; if you’re a heinous, hateful customer they might make you financially compensate for being an asshole so just be cool (200 might become 250). Most artists also overestimate their pricing so it’s kind of a pleasant surprise at the end when you get 50 bucks knocked off of what you were already willing to pay. Remember- not only are you paying for the artist’s time, you’re also paying for the supplies necessary to tattoo you!

You’re all out of endorphins, you’re starting to swell and bleed at every new line, you’re tired so it hurts more. I would recommend lots of liquids and sugary drinks with electrolytes to replenish how much liquid you’re gonna lose. Also plan to feel physically shitty for at least a week and depending on the area, unable to live life normally. It’s a lot of trauma. For instance I did both my shins one day and my ankles got so swollen for almost two weeks I had trouble walking or even sitting without elevating my feet.

I got € 10 off when I got my tattoo. I never asked for it, they just gave it because we were done early. I thought it was nice of the staff to do so.
@Domo7164 жыл бұрын
The first tattoo I ever got was a neck tattoo! hahaha, my artist called me crazy and then agreed to do it, almost 10 years later and no regrets :) at the end of the day, it's up to the individual to make proper life choices, omg and especially for foreign text tattoos - not the tattoo artist haha.

You guys are the ones that need to be polite, judging people for the tattoos that they have, just cause you are scared of the idea of someone getting a tattoo on their genitals doesn't mean it's wrong of it's some fetish thing, learn to be respectful and tolerant, also be open minded for God sake, stop the ignorance

regarding prices; i first told my tattoo artist my idea and how big i wanted it. Then they gave a pricing after i asked if they could tell me how much it would be . just cause i wanted to be respectful of their time. For me to make someone make this amazing drawing for me and put time into it without me knowing how much it would cost me seemed to me, disrespectful. I want to make sure i can pay you for your time. And they really understood me. I think you can try and ask for a lower price but don't put on the table what you think it should be, but try to ask on how much they are willing to go down. Nothing forced though. If they cant go down its still fine. We are not forced to get a tattoo from then and the tattoo artist is not forced to make it cheaper. That's at least what i think and has been working for me.

I worked with a guy who got a rose on his neck for his first tattoo, being that I was one of the more heavily tattooed people at work I told him “it looks great but it’s a ballsy move”. Luckily it was done well so hopefully he doesn’t regret it later.

I brought my toddler to a consultation once but my husband came too and had him in his arms or stroller and he definitely did not touch the ground or even cry. Turned out to be a good thing the artist asked me if I was still breastfeeding and told me to wait till my son was weaned before making an appointment. I hadn’t considered that it could effect my milk

I think the easiest thing to do with people that dont understand the body movement changing the piece, just draw a rough sketch in the place they want it. Yes it takes extra time, but it will help them understand what you are saying.

My first serious tattoo shop experience: Called ahead asked if any artists were availavle for a consulation guy on phone said "yes come in at any time" Ended up talking to some dude while he was tattooing some guys back and the "artist" was only willing to COPY the inspiration I brought in. I did NOT want a copy I wanted the art style used with some alterations and variations. He said "I'm not doing that. I'll do whats in the picture but thats it"

I don't have the time, patience or money to buy a sleeve but I respect those that do. I have ADHD and can't stay still for that long even if I did have the money. I only splurge on a tattoo when I have an extra paycheck or a bonus at work. I'm very happy with the 7 tattoos I have so far.

Do tatooers not like small talk or conversation while they're tattooing?
@brycepeltz6 жыл бұрын
Patricio Aron Castrillon Rosso Depends on the artist. Their personality and how they like to work.
@aurora54816 жыл бұрын
It can be easier for them to get to the "flow" if they don't need to focus on a conversation at the same time; most generally don't mind, especially given that they know you're probably not as used to sitting/lying still for hours in silence as they are; some like to chat. I personally wait for the artist to initiate the conversation and try to not break silences when the needle is on me, and chat while the artist is fiddling with the tools.
@InconsistentContent4 жыл бұрын

The only "haggling" you should do about costs would be ask about a payment plan especially if the tattoo is going to take many sessions, usually I'm surprised when the tattoo costs LESS than I thought, which is awesome because if it's a great tattoo then I can tip them more.

What's the etiquette on asking your artist their Starbucks/lunch order on our way to the appt? Lol I eat beforehand and want to extend an offer to them because they're going to sit as long as I am.
