Spyderco Caribbean RIT Dye G10

Joe eventually dyes his Spyderco Caribbean G10 handle scales blue, after steeping in hot RIT Dye for 2 hours. You can watch the whole journey, or skip ahead and peep the results. Either way, no more yellow handles!

I did mine on the pot burner feature of my propane grill. I also just dropped the whole knife into the pot when it started to boil for about 15 minuets. My Tangerine & black scales are perfection & not at all splotchy!

I did mine in rit dye dyemore synthetic in the graphite color and they look amazing. I only had to soak them for about 15 minutes. It helps if you use a much darker color than the color of the scales. Your came out nice man i dig the color.

Yeah I think Synthetic Dye is the key for G10. All Purpose works but only with a long steep time. So I’ve got Synthetic Purple coming soon 😁 thanks for watching

Looks pretty good I think but I dig the yellow on mine. I get why you want blue and if Spyderco ever makes this knife in caribbean blue, I'll probably get it.

That rattle seems to be blade play. Yes it may close better but did you check for blade center, and play? I'm hoping mine will break in more the detent is soft but the pivot needs some break in on the washers. But love the knife. Patiently awaiting aftermarket scales. Nice color by the way and thanks for educating me on how the dye process goes

I think there is literally always side-to-side play with a compression lock 🤷🏽‍♂️ even over-tight it will wiggle. Hope the dye info helps! Thanks for watching

I'd look to do this in reverse. I recently picked up a spyderco dragonfly and fell in love with the yellow frn now I'm trying to find out if its possible to bleach out a darker colour like Od green.

Normally rit dying takes about 5 to 30 minutes. What might've been the issue here, the yellow portions could be sanded too smooth. I don't own a caribbean, but I've had this problem before, of rit dye not taking to g10 and the parts it did take to being unevenly dyed and that's what it was, the g10 was too highly polished. I just roughed up the g10 a little with sand paper but that might be a pain on the Caribbean because of the intricate scale pattern.

Well the whole process was kind of a pain so if I have to re-dye at some point I’ll put in the extra effort to sand it! Dye once, cry once 😂 thanks for the tip!
